The purpose of this paper is to report the experience of the authors regarding the treatment of the primitive and secondary facial pains by Percutaneous Selective Thermorhizotomy (P.S.T.), 180 patients having been treated in the period of two years. The immediate postoperative control has obtained 156 good results (86,6%), 10 medium results (5,5%) and 14 (7,7%) unsuccessful. The failure of the P.S.T. in the treatment of the post-zosterian neuralgias, in the atypical and in the vascular pains is stated. The P.S.T. appears resolutive in the "tic doloreux" and secondary painful syndromes. A far follow up was performed (4 months-2 years) on 94 patients and a good result was kept at 64,2% among all of them. The shortage of the postoperative not expected collateral effect is also stated. The causes of unsuccessful and poor results (mistaking in the choice of the patient or tecnical mistaking) are discussed. It is finally suggested a careful personal value of the patient candidated to operation, in order to reduce the poor results and therefore improve the successful ones.
Salmeterol, a long-acting beta 2-adrenoceptor agonist, prevents early and late asthmatic responses in atopic asthmatics and inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators from various cells and tissues. We investigated the effect of salmeterol on in vitro basophil histamine release (BHR). Washed basophil leukocytes from allergic (n = 6) and nonallergic subjects (n = 18) were preincubated for 10 min with different concentrations of salmeterol prior to stimulation with antigens (Ag) and anti-IgE for 45 min. BHR was detected by an automated fluorometric assay. If control BHR (without inhibition) reached > or = 30% of the total histamine content, maximal % inhibition (Imax, mean +/- SEM) and the concentration of salmeterol causing 30% inhibition (IC30, geometric mean) were calculated. At concentrations of between 1 and 100 microM salmeterol, concentration-dependent inhibition of release was found for Ag- and anti-IgE-mediated BHR. The Imax of anti-IgE-mediated BHR reached 46 +/- 16% at 30 microM salmeterol. IC30 values were 12 microM for Ag- and 8 microM for anti-IgE-induced BHR. Higher concentrations of salmeterol induced BHR in all subjects (n = 24, 100 microM: 28 +/- 5% BHR), overlapping the inhibitory effect on BHR. Kinetic studies using 30 microM salmeterol (n = 10) showed > 30% inhibition with short preincubation periods (< 10 s). Salbutamol, an older, widely used beta 2-adrenoceptor agonist, had no effect on IgE-mediated BHR (n = 8). We conclude that salmeterol significantly inhibits IgE-mediated histamine release from human leukocytes in the micromolar range.
A series of 6 patients with primary T-cell lymphomas of the central nervous system (PTCLCNS) is presented. The clinical, histological and immunohistological findings are shown. The lesions were infratentorial in the 34% and sopratentorial in the 66% of the cases. Of the 5 cases with an available follow-up only one died in the first year after diagnosis and one is alive and well after 42 months. These data agree with those of others series of PTCLCNS in the literature. In conclusion our data and those of the literature suggest that immunophenotyping should routinely be carried in primary non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of the CNS (PNHLCNS), because the T-cell forms run a more favourable course than the B-cell varieties.

Two recently described mouse strains, with high (MGH) and low (MGL) blood magnesium (Mg) levels were obtained by selection over 19 generations. Both strains exhibit strong differences for characteristics generally known to be related to blood Mg levels, such as increased stress sensitivity and stress-induced aggressivity in MGL mice. In contrast, while experimental Mg deficiency due to low oral Mg intake has been shown to shorten life span and lower reproductive ability, reproductive longevity was longer in the MGL than in the MGH strain. Interestingly, the life spans of the two strains are very similar. Although this character could have been fixed in the strains by chance, with no relationship to the blood Mg level, the possibility of a causal link with the selection cannot be ruled out and is discussed. Regardless of the mechanisms at stake, the MGH and MGL strains appear to constitute a new model for the study of the relationships between reproductive longevity and blood Mg levels.
