Choriogonin treatment of patients with pathospermia.

The effect of HCG was examined in 160 infertile patients. The first group of patients (100 men) received 1500 I.U. HCG twice weekly for 8 weeks, the second group (60 men) was given 1500 I.U. HCG twice weekly for 12 weeks. Serum testosterone level was found to be increased after treatment in 44 cases. Improvement was reported on potentia coeundi. The spermiogram improved in 34% of the cases. During the period of treatment 25 wives became pregnant.

Effect of LH-RH loading in subfertile men.

Thirty-two infertility patients were studied to evaluate the response of plasma FSH and LH to intravenous injection of 100 microgram synthetic LH-RH. Initial LH and FSH levels were taken into consideration in evaluating the responses. While the LH response was usually more pronounced, it seemed more valuable, from the prognostic point of view, to examine the FSH changes because of their applications to the diagnostic and prognostic processes.

Suppression of uterine motor activity by prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor Naproxen.

Rats were ovariectomized on day 16 of pregnancy and they were fitted with a pressure sensor uterine microballoon assembly and were given a daily dose of Naproxen-sodium. Daily uterine activity recordings were taken and subjected to statistical analysis and the rats were carefully checked for either aborting or delivering their fetuses. Our data showed that Naproxen treatment effectively and significantly prevented the autocatalytic evolution of the uterine motor activity and the regulatory "see-saw" of progesterone and prostaglandins was rebalanced at a lower level.

In vitro prostaglandin biosynthesis in human pregnant uterus from arachidonic acid.

Formation of prostaglandins (F2alpha, E2 and D2) in the pregnant human uterus microsomes was studied using 14C-labeled arachidonic acid. Sample of uterine pieces were removed from the lower uterine segment at the time of Caesarean section. The prostaglandin synthesis in the microsomal fraction was characterized in terms of cofactors, substrate concentration and incubation time requirements.

Steroid levels in the serum and seminal plasma during clomiphene therapy in hypofertile men.

The serum and seminal plasma concentrations of androstenedione, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and 17beta-oestradiol were investigated in hypo- and oligospermic males during clomiphene-citrate, administration. A significant increase was demonstrated in the serum testosterone, dihydrosterone and 17beta-oestradiol values, mainly in the first month of therapy. The steroid increase in the ejaculate was less pronounced. Measuring of 17beta-oestradiol in serum appears to be a useful parameter for estimating the stimulative effect of clomiphene citrate.

Metabolism of prostaglandin F2alpha in early human placenta in vitro.

The authors were investigating the metabolism of prostaglandin F2alpha in human early placenta, in in vitro incubation experiments. They have identified both major metabolites, 15-keto-PGF2alpha and 15-keto-13,14 dehydro PGF2alpha. They have examined the change in the percentage of these, taken as a function of time. They have established that the main site of inactivating the endogenous PGF2alpha is the early human placenta. They suppose that the considerable Pg-inactiviting effect of the placenta has a part which acts as a protecting mechanism in preventing the uterotonic influence of the endogenous prostaglandins.

Biological significance of human prolactin in adult, healthy and infertile males.

The human prolactin (hP) levels have been studied in adult healthy and infertile males. The hormone level was 8.5--38.0 ng/ml in sperm-plasma and 3.4--32 ng/ml in blood plasma. Values for normo and pathospermic patients showed no significant difference. In normo and hypospermia the hP level was higher in the ejaculate than in blood plasma. There was a close correlation between the hP and fructose levels of the ejaculate, while the correlation between hP and testosterone levels in the ejaculate was not highly significant. There is a certain relationship between the plasma hP and testosterone levels and the sperm count.

[The importance of hormone examinations in ovulation induction (author's transl)].

Those hormone-determination methods were reported by the authors which help to make the ovary response visible for the experts during the ovulation induction. They also dealt with the determination of basal temperature measuring, oestrogen, pregnandiol, progesterone, oestradiol-17beta, FSH, LH, epimestrol and clomiphen. After the routine determination of the above mentioned parameter a preprinted sheet was done, where every treated case was illustrated graphically. From these cases some of the typical ones were shown and analyzed. The determination of hormonal releasing curves characteristic of hyperstimulation, and the importance of these most dangerous complication was emphasized.
