We describe a reference device that provides accurate correlations between anatomic and functional brain images. The reference device, which generates fiduciary reference points on sequential scan planes, is positioned adjacent to the orbitomeatal line of the subject, and held in place by a framework anchored to the external auditory meatus. The reference system was tested on 17 subjects undergoing Tc-99m-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (Tc-99m-HM-PAO) brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and cranial computed tomography (CT) scans. The centers of the caudate nuclei, thalami, brain stem, and cerebellar vermis were identified independently on CT and SPECT. The average difference +/- 1 sd between structure locations (x, y, and z) on SPECT and CT were calculated as 1.86 +/- 1.5, 2.16 +/- 1.4, and 1.83 +/- 1.9 mm, respectively. The relevance of the method to clinical applications is illustrated by the localization of a recurrent viable glioma and an epileptogenic focus. This reference system provides an accurate, rapid, and noninvasive patient-specific method for the correlation of brain structure with brain function.

The method for determining glycosylate serum proteins is based on the ketoamines property (fructosamine) of reducing nitro-tetrazoline blue, in alkaline medium, to a coloured, photometric product. The technique is simple, rapid, reproducible and cheap. The method was used for investigation of 52 diabetics and 17 normal subjects. The normal values were between 1.50-2.70 mmol/l, uncertain between 2.70-3.00 mmol/l, and certainly pathological above 3.00 mmol/l. The level of serum fructosamines shows the glycemia variations for an average period of about two weeks, before determination. It is one of the valuable parameters for detecting and following the patients with diabetes mellitus, and has also a prognostic value in the evolution of the disease.
The results of plasma digoxin concentration (PDC) measurements in 260 patients treated with digitalis lanata preparations (digoxin, lanatoside C, betamethyl-digoxin) allowed the following observations: 1. Owing to an important overlap between "toxic" and "nontoxic" PDC values, the method has a limited value in the diagnosis of digitalis toxicity. However, in patients with toxicity associated with PDC under 2 ng/ml, it allows identification digitalis sensitivity. 2. A dosage selection based on PDC assessment led to a decrease of digitalis toxicity under 4%. As the method is not widely available, it has to be used in patients with borderline renal function, in aged subjects and in patients with rapid atrial fibrillation who require higher digitalis doses for heart rate control.
