Relationship between T and B lymphocyte values and prognosis in malignant melanoma.

T and B lymphocyte populations were evaluated in 56 patients with malignant melanoma. Active rosettes (T-Ea) were decreased only in metastatic patients, while the total T population (T-Et) was decreased in all stages. In addition the metastatic patients presented significant decreases in IgD and IgM subpopulations. An increase in null cells was noted in metastatic patients. Regular controls over a period of 2 years showed that T-Ea levels were closely linked to the clinical picture. Patients whose values were constant remained cancer free, while a reduction heralded the appearance of clinical and/or radiological signs of metastasis.

[Mitral and aortic regurgitation: a rare association in ankylosing spondylitis (author's transl)].

The occurrence of mitral regurgitation in ankylitis is very unusual. The case reported herein is a remarkable one because the subaortic bump at the base of the anterior mitral leaflet, the mose characteristic aspect of the heart involvement in this disease, was visualized for the first time by echocardiography. Moreover, the prolapse of the mitral leaflets was documented; it allows for a new understanding as far as the mechanism of the regurgitation is concerned.

Aortic Valve Insufficiency↗

Active rosette test in cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders.

T and B peripheral blood lymphocytes were evaluated in 17 patients with clinical and histological evidence of mycosis fungoides and in ten patients with benign lymphoplasias of the skin. The T subpopulation (T-Ea) characterized by a rapid rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes was also measured in these patients. While both T-total population (T-Et) and T-Ea subpopulation were within the normal range in pseudolymphoma group, a statistically significant decrease was observed in T-Ea and T-Et populations in the mycosis fungoides group. Moreover, the decrease in T-Ea subpopulation was found in all cases under investigation, even when T-Et population was still at the normal levels. A close relation between T-Ea values and clinical status was observed. B and null cells were substantially unchanged in all patients.

[Echocardiographic study of the Björk-Shiley disc prosthesis (author's transl)].

The echocardiography of 25 patients with Björk-Shiley disc prosthesis (16 aortic, 7 mitralic, 1 both mitralic and aortic and 1 both mitralic and tricuspidal) was studied. Mitralic prosthesis were placed with the shortest disc segment looking forward; aortic prosthesis faced the shortest disk segment looking towards the coronaric sinus. The echo's morphology is related to the multiple relationships among position and direction of the prosthesis and the probe. In the aortic echocardiogram, it is possible to recognize echoes from the ring dissociated by anterior and posterior aortic walls. Between them echoes corresponding to the open disc appear, making a quadrangular figure. The values of the internal diameter of the ring obtained were very similar to the real value (difference 0-1 mm). Mitralic echocardiogram is characterized by the valvular disc movement tracing the typical quadrangular pattern, which is due to its opening and closure. Echoes of the supporting apparatus can be recorded directing the probe toward the heart base. In aortic and mitralic prosthesis, disc movements can be estimated. Opening and closure speed rate and their correlation vary on a large scale, both within different patients and in the same patient. Maximum disc excursion appears to be a more homogeneous and constant data in long-term controls and can be used to estimate valvular functionality: in aortic prosthesis valve the obtained value (mean = 17.46 +/- 0.53 "ES") is similar to the real diameter of the disc, in mitral prosthesis valve the value obtained (mean = 17.50 +/- 0.74 "ES") is shorter than the real value.
