[Hemorrheological survey in dystrophia myotonica and other muscular dystrophies].

We have determined the main hemorheological parameters in a group of patients suffering from myotonic dystrophy and in another group with oculopharyngeal or limb-girdle myopathy. From the results we have obtained it is evident that of all the rheological parameters considered only hematocrit, fibrinogen and fibrinogen/albumin ratio are different in patients with myotonic dystrophy when compared to that of normal controls. There were no variations in blood, plasma and serum viscosities and in erythrocyte filterability. In addition, hemorheological alterations were not present in patients with oculopharyngeal or limb-girdle myopathy.

[Erythrocyte filterability in diabetes mellitus (a survey carried out by two methods)].

In 45 diabetic patients (22 men and 23 women) subdivided in relation to type and vascular complications we have evaluated the erythrocyte filterability either by filtering whole blood (VRBC) or red blood cells suspended (5%) in autologous prefiltered plasma (deformability index). From the obtained results it is evident that VRBC is able to distinguish diabetic patients from normal subjects, whereas this does not happen with the deformability index. The explanation of these data is that the whole blood filterability, especially in diabetic patients, depends on the behavior of both cellular and plasmatic extraerythrocyte parameters.

Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1↗

[Blood viscosity in diabetes mellitus (evaluation on the basis of high shear rates)].

In 45 diabetic patients (22 men and 23 women) subdivided in relation to type and vascular complications we have evaluated the blood viscosity at high and low shear rates. From the obtained results it is evident that only at low shear rates this hemorheological parameter distinguishes diabetic patients from normal subjects and diabetic patients without vascular complications from those with these complications. This result is present only because these shear rates are dependent on the influence of the erythrocyte aggregation which is altered in the diabetic disease.

Blood Viscosity↗

[Hemorrheological determinants and metabolic parameters in reactive hypertension caused by exertion].

In a group of 31 healthy subjects submitted to the exercise test and subdivided according to the presence or absence of hypertensive reaction we have evaluated at rest, at the maximum of the exercise and at recovery the hemodynamic and metabolic parameters and the hemorheological determinants. From the obtained results it is evident that the hemorheological determinants in the two groups of subjects show an almost similar behavior and, in any case, they behave in a manner that the hemorheological pattern cannot be considered sufficient by itself for clarifying the physiopathological mechanism of the hypertensive reaction.

Blood Viscosity↗

Blood rheology in acute myocardial infarction.

The haemorheological determinants were studied in 83 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI); the survivors were subdivided in relation to diabetes and haemodynamic class. All viscosity determinants were measured at the early stage (within 48 hours) and in the two weeks after AMI. The haemorheological changes that are more evident in MI patients deceased, are not dependent on diabetes and haemodynamic class, except for the haematocrit, in MI patients survivors. The authors suggest that the blood rheology should form part of the parameters studied at the different stages of AMI. The also hold, according to indications reported by other authors, that the correction of their alterations is useful.

[Study of behaviour of fibrinogen and of some glycoproteins in arteriosclerotic clinical situations (author's transl)].

The behaviour of fibrinogen, haptoglobin alpha 1-acid GP, ceruloplasmin, alpha 2-macroglobulin and alpha 2-HS in patients with acute myocardial infarction (in the initial stage and in the following two weeks), chronic ischaemic heart disease, chronic atherosclerotic vascular disease and hyperlipoproteinemia was evaluated. According to the obtained results the utility of their evaluation is evident and, especially for the chronic situations, some therapeutic considerations emerge.

Acute Disease↗

[Blood and plasma viscosity during the various phases of the acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Preliminary study (author's transl)].

In a group of 29 infarct cases, the behaviour of the same blood and plasma viscosity at the initial stage and two weeks after the AMI was. At the same time as the rheological tests, we evaluated a few parameters of the lipid (cholesterol-triglyceride), proteic (fibrinogen) and glycoproteic (haptogloben-alpha1 acid GP ceruloplasmin) balance. Though noting significant variations of all the parameters studied, the correlation between the viscosity of blood and plasm and the other humoral parameters is of little significance. In fact except for the good correlation between the blood viscosity with hematocrit and with the fibrinogen (only on 7th day and at high gradient) the other correlations, when present, are occasional or of little significance. It is our intention to continue the research undertaken, considering either the utility of the early diagnosis of a rheological change or the possibility that the latter may be a further parameter to be related to clinical, hemodynamic and humoral parameters useful for determining the prognosis of the AMI.
