Normal limits of the lateral cerebral ventricles on the lateral phlebogram: a statistical analysis.

The highest points of the subependymal veins of the lateral cerebral ventricles (frontal horn, body and atrium) and the height of the body have been evaluated in selected patients. Through a statistical analysis, they have been demonstrated to depend on the height of the supratentorial compartment of the skull. Taking into account this relation, the results obtained furnish reliable criteria for evaluating ventricular enlargement or sectional deformity.

Surgical indications in normotensive hydrocephalus. A retrospective analysis of the relations of some diagnostic findings to the results of surgical treatment.

Twenty two of fifty five patients initially suspected of suffering from normotensive hydrocephalus were surgically treated (CSF ventriculoatrial shunt). The results of surgery were related to the findings of the different diagnostic examinations (pneumoencephalography, isotope cisternography, transfer fron CSF to blood of isotope labelled serum albumin, constant infusion manometric test, long lasting intraventricular pressure recording). 1.Pneumoencephalography, intraventricular pressure recording, and, above all, isotope cisternography provided the most reliable data for diagnosis and surgical prognosis. 2. The combined use of pneumoencephalography and isotope cisternography was sufficient for a correct diagnosis and surgical prognosis in about 50% of the patients examined. 3. When the diagnostic information given by the combined results of the two above examinations was not sufficient, intraventricular pressure recording proved to be the most useful examination to supplement it. 4. The relation of the results of the study of transfer of istope labelled serum albumin from CSF to blood and of the constant infusion manometric test to the surgical outcome was uncertain.

A practical approach to the phlebographic study of the lateral cerebral ventricles.

The main anatomical features of the subependymal veins of the lateral ventricles are summarized. The important role of the subependymal veins for the study of the size and shape of the lateral ventricles is outlined. The most typical modifications which occur in cases of ventricular enlargement or ventricular deformation due to cerebral tumors are illustrated. The importance of the criteria to be followed for the exact identification of the lateral and medial veins to each ventricular portion are stressed. This is possible thanks to the combined study of the phlebograms in the right angled projections.

Oxygen pressure, fatty acid composition and ergosterol level in Rhodotorula gracilis.

Cells of Rhodotorula gracilis grown for 6 hrs at 2 mm Hg O2 pressure when compared with cells grown for 6 hrs at 140 mm Hg, show: a) a large decrease in the level of ergosterol, b) a significant increase in the level of oleic acid and a decrease in the levels of linoleic and linolenic acids, both in fatty acid fraction of the phospholipids and in the free fatty acids and neutral fat fractions. The results suggest that the dehydrogenation of oleic acid to linoleic acid is preferentially inhibited at low O2 pressure. The possibility is considered that these changes of lipid metabolism might be causally related with decrease of the growth rate observed at low O2 pressure.

The autoregulatory capability of Galen's rete cerebri and its connections.

The rete, a vascular system between the extra- and intracerebral arteries of certain animals, may have a variety of functions in different species. The calibres of the vessels of the rete and its arteries of supply have been measured under different conditions of blood pressure and PaCO2. It has been shown that the rete and its afferent arteries behave in an autoregulatory fashion down to a blood pressure of 60 mmHg. They also dilate with a rise in PaCO2. It has also been found that some parts of the system dilate even when the blood pressure drops lower than 60 mmHg. It is suggested that this autoregulatory capacity of extradural vessels limits the requirement for CSF spaces to change with blood pressure changes. A general rule has been sought which would link the known facts about cerebral autoregulation and the possession of extra- to intracranial anastomoses with the bodily shape and posture of the particular animal.

The vasodilator action of angiography with Urografin 60% on the basal vessels of the brain of the baboon.

Angiography under experimental conditions shows that Urografin has a vasodilator action of the order of 8% upon the basal cerebral arteries of the baboon. This action is not seen within the first 4 sec of the angiogram and the dilator effect of a single injection has passed off completely 15 min later. Three successive injections within 7 min show little evidence of cumulative vasodilatation. The vasodilator action of three successive angiograms has disappeared 22 to 29 min later. Because of wide variations in the degree of vasodilatation shown by individual baboons it may be necessary to use each baboon as its own control in subsequent work.
