Results of the clinical and radiographic examination of 8 lame horses with tarsal sheath distension are described. In chronic cases pathological exostoses were identified radiographically in the sustentaculum tali and were demonstrated at post mortem in 4 of the horses which were destroyed. The prognosis and the feasibility of treatment are discussed in the light of these changes and the associated damage found at post mortem in the deep flexor tendon and its sheath. Trauma to the hock was known to have occurred in half the cases and was suspected in the others.
The history of techniques for abdominal equine cryptorchidectomy is briefly reviewed. The technique of suprapubic paramedian laparotomy as used since 1955 at the University of Liverpool veterinary field station is described in detail and an account given of the authors' experience with the technique in nearly 200 cases. It is concluded that the approach to the abdominal cavity is easy, that the testis itself is generally readily located and removed and that controlled repair of the incision is possible. Serious post-operative complications are rare and the danger of post-operative prolapse of bowel eliminated.

Equine anterior enteritis is an acute syndrome with unknown aetiology, although salmonellosis and infection with Clostridium perfringens have both been suggested as potential causes. The main aim of this preliminary study was to compare the prevalence of toxigenic types of C. perfringens in clinically healthy horses and in horses with anterior enteritis. From horses admitted with colic at Phillip Leverhulme Large Animal Hospital in 1995-1996, samples of gastric reflux, small intestinal contents and faeces were taken for isolation of C. perfringens. Five of those horses were admitted as anterior enteritis cases, of which C. perfringens was isolated in pure culture in all five horses. Two of the anterior enteritis cases from which viable bacterial counts had been performed revealed 10(6) CFU/g faeces C. perfringens. Samples of gastric reflux and small intestinal contents submitted from one of these horses revealed 10(4) CFU/mL and 10(5) CFU/mL respectively. The number of C. perfringens observed in the gastric reflux was considered significant as the total volume removed was 12 L. The counts observed in faeces taken from horses admitted with anterior enteritis, were significantly higher than the <10(2) CFU/g faeces observed in faeces from healthy horses and horse presenting with colic and with other diagnoses. The major toxigenic types of C. perfringens in both healthy and diseased horses are being investigated using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify target DNA sequences of the toxin genes. Primers have been designed from the published DNA sequences of the enterotoxin, alpha, beta, epsilon and iota toxin genes. PCR products obtained from NCTC strains of C. perfringens have been cloned and the sequenced, to verify that the amplicon sequence is correct. Initial typing suggests that C. perfringens type A is the predominant toxin type isolated from healthy horses and horses with colic with other diagnoses.C. perfringens strains isolated from horses with anterior enteritis are of type D.
Education productivity, resource consumption, and the link between productivity and cost continue to be critical dimensions that need to be managed effectively in the face of continued downsizing and restructuring. EdVision is a fiscal based methodology that measures all three dimensions. The methodology was initially developed in the early 1990s and has been refined over the past 7 years. EdVision links productivity to cost by assessing Total Direct Expense per Education Relative Value Unit (RVU). Benchmarking this new indicator is key to moving toward an accurate measure of education prductivity and cost across organizations. EdVision allows education and training departments to prove their productivity and base resource decisions on data, thereby reducing vulnerability to unnecessary budget cuts.
The clinical features of 71 cases in 70 horses in which part of the small intestine became entrapped in the epiploic foramen are described. The horses' sex, age and breed, the month during which they were affected, and whether they exhibited stereotypic behaviour were compared with the same variables in 1279 horses which suffered other types of surgical colic during the same period. Thoroughbred and thoroughbred cross horses were over-represented among the 70 affected horses. There was no age or sex predilection. Fifty-five (77.5 per cent) of the cases occurred between October and March and 15 (21.1 per cent) occurred in January. The cases were significantly more likely to have a history of crib-biting/windsucking than the control group (odds ratio 7.9, 95 per cent confidence interval 4.1 to 15.3). The condition had recurred in two of the horses. Fifty-eight (81.7 per cent) recovered from surgery and 49 (69 per cent) survived until they were discharged from hospital. The median survival time of 31 of the affected horses discharged from the hospital was 700 days, whereas 417 horses with other types of surgical colic had a median survival time in excess of 1931 days.

Workloads of nursing educators and nursing education departments as a whole have not always been captured accurately in the past, making it difficult to monitor and communicate resource consumption. Recognizing the need to determine an accurate Relative Value Unit in fiscally reliable terms, a Nursing Education Allocation System was developed to verify productivity and resource consumption. Standard values for each workload were established after a 6-month time study and entered into an automated allocation system. Productivity standards were then derived, making it possible to standardize measurement of workload from year to year and have good decision support data when determining staffing models in response to forecasted educational priorities.
