[Effectiveness of surgical measures in progressive ovarian cancer].

A report is given about the value of the active large removing of tumour-tissue in cases of advanced ovarian cancers (89 patients suffering an ovarian in the stage T3/T4M1 in the time from 1970 to 1975). The survival chances of the 49 patients in which it was possible to remove greatest parts of the tumours, was nearly 20 per cent better than in 38 patients without such therapy.

Antineoplastic Agents↗

Amodiaquine agranulocytosis.

A case of profound neutropenia and severe infection after the administration of amodiaquine is presented. The recommended dose for malaria prophylaxis was administered.

Balanced bladder function in spinal cord injury patients.

A urodynamic assessment was done on 55 patients with spinal cord injuries treated with intermittent catheterization and therapy for autonomic dysreflexia and external sphincter spasm. While 95 per cent of the patients with upper motor neuron lesions achieved balanced bladder function they were not necessarily free of a catheter. The results obtained in male patients compare favorably to those reported from specialized spinal cord injury centers. Female spinal cord injured patients generally were unable to achieve a catheter-free status.

Ataxia↗

Urethral closing pressure after spinal cord injury and its relationship to autonomic dysreflexia.

The evolution of patterns of neurogenic vesical dysfunction with emphasis on urethral resistance has been studied using a two-catheter urethral profile technique in 24 patients following acute spinal cord injury. Inappropriate urethral resistance to voiding appeared to result both from smooth and skeletal muscular activity and to some extent was dependent on the level of the spinal cord lesion. Autonomic dysreflexia was common, and responded to treatment with an alpha-sympatholytic agent.

[Beta-glucuronidase activity in human ovarian tissue during the life- and cycle-phases of the woman].

The behaviour of the beta-glucuronidase activity during the life phases and the phase of the cycle of a woman has been studied in 51 human ovaries after the Dohrmann method. The study clearly indicates a dependency on age, that is demonstrated by a rise in beta-glucuronidase activity from 536 microgram Ph/h/g ovarial tissue during full functioning to 705 microgram Ph/h/g ovarial tissue in the premenopause and by dropping to 529 microgram Ph/h/g ovarial tissue in the menopause and the senium. The premenopause values are significantly higher compared to that of the other two functional phases. The activity of the beta-glucuronidase is significantly higher in the secretory phase than in the proliferation phase. Existing relations between the beta-glucuronidase of the ovary and the gonadotropic hormones of the hypophysis and the oestrogen metabolism are discussed.

[Modification of glycylglycine dipeptidase activity in the human ovary using follicle stimulating hormone. I].

The glycyl glycine dipeptidase activity under the in vitro influence of two follicle-stimulating hormone preparations of different concentration was investigated in 36 ovaries. A significant impediment was observed under Folistiman, whereas under Anthrogon the impediment could only be detected with higher concentrations. The FSH/ICSH relation evidently plays an important role in this respect. The results are in support of the statement that the glycyl glycine activity in vivo also depends on the gonadotrophin production. At the same time they affirm the fact that not only endopeptidases play a role in the hormone metabolism of the ovary.

Alcohol oxidase and catalase in peroxisomes of methanol-grown Candida boidinii.

Microbodies, designated as peroxisomes because of their enzyme complement, have been isolated from methanol-grown cells of Candida boidinii. Spheroplast lysates were separated on non-continuous Ficoll density gradients, resulting in a mitochondrial fraction and a peroxisome fraction. Estimates of purity using the mitochondrial enzyme markers suggested that the contamination of mitochondria in the peroxisome fraction was about 2-3%. As shown by electron microscopy the peroxisomes were 0.4-0.6 mum in diameter and contained crystalloid inclusions. Alcohol oxidase and catalase, which catalyse the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde in Candida boidinii, could be localized within the peroxisomes. Gel-electrophoretic studies of the peroxisome fraction demonstrated that it contained only two predominant protein bands consistent with alcohol oxidase and catalase. No alcohol oxidase and catalase activity was found in mitochondria.

Alcohol Oxidoreductases↗

Microbiodies in methanol-grown Candida boidinii.

Intracellular structures were observed in Candida boidinii grown in a medium containing methanol as the sole source of carbon and energy; these structures were absent in the same organism grown in the presence of glucose or ethanol. These substrate-specific structures are ultrastructurally similar to microbodies. Studies with sphaeroplast and a mutant lacking alcohol-oxidase activity indicate that the alcohol may be located in these microbodies.

Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease.

A description if given of a male patient in whom a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was made by brain biopsy. This is believed to be the first case of this syndrome reported from Papua New Guinea.
