Relationship between behavioral maturation measured by the "Baum" test and EEG frequency. A pilot study on monozygotic and dizygotic twins.

In a pilot study, the possible influence of the inherited electroencephalogram (EEG) pattern on aspects of psychologic maturation was investigated. The twin sample consisted of 208 pairs, 110 monozygotic (MZ) and 98 dizygotic (DZ), mostly children and adolescents. The study showed a greater similarity between MZ compared with DZ twins in an immaturity score constructed from the Baum test (Koch 1976) and in a teacher's maturity scoring of essays. For both parameters, a correlation between occipital alpha-frequency and the test criterium could be demonstrated. This correlation was in the direction expected, and it was significant statistically. This result suggests an influence of genetically determined variation of brain maturation on interindividual variability of psychologic variation. Due to shortcomings of the methods used in the study, more specific conclusions cannot be drawn; the problem needs further elucidation using modern methods.

Human endothelial cell proliferation inhibiting activity in the sera of patients suffering from 'shock' or 'sepsis'.

The response of DNA-synthesis of human endothelial cells to sera derived from twenty-five patients suffering from 'sepsis' or 'shock' was measured by autoradiographic methods. In eight cases a constant decrease in proliferative response was found compared to that of sera from healthy donors. These proliferation values were shown to lie below the '60%-of-control-line'. The difference between the means of control and of corresponding 'low-response' values was significant (P less than 0.05). In three cases a diminished response was caused only by some of several serum samples taken at different times. These results correlated well with the clinical state and outcome of patients but not with any of the over sixty clinical, therapeutic, laboratory and post-mortem parameters of investigation. Evidence is presented for a proliferation inhibiting activity in sera of patients in clinically poor states, and some physico-chemical properties of this 'factor' are described. Lethal injury to the cells or an impairment of cellular migration could not be observed within the observation periods used in this study.

[Genetically determined variability in mental and emotional development (author's transl)].

Human beings develop in biologically determined phases: During certain periods of life, sensitivity for learning specific tasks is increased. For successful completion of the learning process, however, adequate offers from the environment are necessary. Within the limits of this general rule, considerable genetically determined, interindividual differences are observed. The ability to develop faster or slower in certain phases of life, - strong and weak points, - specific chances and liabilities are distributed unevenly. The art of education consists in adjusting offers for learning to these individual differences. In addition to the cognitive field, requirements for emotional and social learning should not be neglected. Research on biologic maturation, on its interaction with offers from the environment, and on genetic variability will have to include in future increasingly neurobiologic concepts and methods.

[Prophylaxis and treatment of respiratory tract infection in ventilated patients by endotracheal administration of aminoglycosides (author's transl)].

The effects of intratracheal administration of gentamicin on frequency of bacterial contamination of the trachea and respiratory tract infection were assessed in a controlled and prospective study in 20 patients on a respirator. Gentamicin was instilled undiluted 6-hourly in a dosage of 40 mg into the trachea. Compared with a control group (n = 20), patients with intratracheal gentamicin instillation showed earlier reduction of tracheal bacterial contamination and during further ventilation a diminished rate of colonisation of the trachea. There was no evidence of an increase of Candida albicans. Pneumonic infiltrations regressed earlier in patients with intratracheal gentamicin. Respiratory tract infections were less frequent during continued artificial ventilation than in the control group. In ventilated patients intratracheal aminoglycosides can thus be recommended for prophylaxis of respiratory tract infections.

Neurobiological approaches in human behavior genetics.

An attempt should be made to base analysis of problems in human behavior genetics on existing knowledge of human biochemical genetics and neurobiology. Examples for this approach are studies showing HY antigen patterns of the opposite sex in transsexuality, slight psychological deviations in heterozygotes of recessive metabolic diseases such as phenylketonuria and lipid storage diseases, and psychological studies in healthy individuals with various genetic variants of the normal human electroencephalogram (EEG). Results of such studies will help gradually to replace emotional controversy by rational assessment of facts.

Isolation of a SV40-like virus from a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

A SV40-like virus was isolated from the brain of a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. The virus was antigenically and serologically indistinguishable from SV40 wild type. A unique difference from SV40 was its ability to grow on human glial and CV-I monkey cells. The molecular weight of the viral DNA was very similar to that of SV40 DNA and the DNA cleavage patterns obtained after digestion with Hind II and Hind III restriction endonucleases were indistinguishable from those of SV40.

[Characterization of genetic EEG-variations with the amplitude-interval-analysis. I. Variations of alpha-activity; flat-EEG; borderline flat EEG, occipital slow beta-waves; monotonous alpha-rhythm (author's transl)].

In 121 healthy adult male probands with different variants of alpha-activity (monotonous alpha-waves; low voltage EEG, borderline low voltage EEG; occipital slow beta-waves) a quantitative description of unipolar leads was carried out using a program for amplitude-interval (time-domain) analysis. Statistically significant differences between means of the examined parameters were discovered between the various EEG variants. No single parameter, however, separates these variants reliably. For such a separation, methods of multivariate statistics will have to be used. Significant differences between right and left hemispheres (primarily lower alpha-activity together with higher beta-activity on the left hemisphere) were found in all EEG types examined except the variant with monotonous alpha-waves.

[Characterization of genetic EEG variables with the amplitude-interval-analysis. II. Variations of the beta-activity and controls (author's transl)].

In 165 adult male probands with different variants of beta-Activity (fronto-percentral beta-wave-groups; diffuse beta-waves) including 76 controls from the same proband population but with inconspicuous EEG patterns, a quantitative description of unipolar leads was carried out using a program for amplitude-interval (time-domain) analysis. Statistically significant differences between some means of the examined parameters were found between the various EEG variants. No single parameter, however, separates these variants reliably. For such a separation, methods of multivariate statistics will have to be used. Significant differences between left and right hemispheres (especially lower average alpha-activity together with higher beta-activity on the left-hand side) were found in all examined EEG types including the controls. Hence, the lack of a significant side difference in the variant with monotonous alpha-waves as described in the first report of this series remains unique.

[Characterization of genetic EEG-variations with the amplitude-interval-analysis. III. Assignment of new obtained EEGs to well-known types of bioelectric activities on the basis of data of amplitude-interval-analysis (author's transl)].

Quantitative description of some EEG-variants by amplitude-interval (time-domain) analysis revealed significant differences of parameter means but failed to give one single, sufficiently reliable criterion for classification. Therefore, we tried to solve the problem of classification through quantitative criteria by discriminant analysis. For each EEG, 128 different measurements were taken, but only 104 were included in the analysis; the rest failed to contribute any measurable information. For 243 of th 298 probands, the data were sufficient for inclusion in the study. Only 15 (6.2%) were classified falsely; this number was reduced to 3 (1.7%) when the calculation was performed leaving out the (64) controls. A control analysis by a Monte-Carlo-Method in which the classification criterium was calculated using 80% of all cases only, and the remaining 20% were then attributed tentatively to the variant groups, gave much less convincing results. It follows that more and better criteria for separation of these variants have to be developed before classification of EEGs exclusively on the basis of measurements will become possible.

Improvement of depression by REM sleep deprivation. New findings and a theory.

We compared sleep variables in 14 drug-free endogenous depressives and in 14 age- and insomnia-matched, nondepressed controls before and after brief rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation by awakenings. Before REM sleep deprivation, compared with controls, depressives had lower REM latency, higher REM frequency, and--a new finding--an abnormal temporal distribution of REM sleep. Depression improvement by REM sleep deprivation correlated with the ameliorative effect of brief REM sleep deprivation on on indicator of the abnormal temporal distribution of REM sleep. Several findings suggest that the depressive abnormalities represent a "damaged," weakened sleep cycle "oscillator" and its correlate, a circadian rhythm disturbance, and that REM sleep deprivation improved depression to the extent that it stimulated the oscillator and corrected one manifestation of the circadian rhythm disturbance.
