[Ataxia-telangiectasia with immunodeficiency and malignant lymphoma. Report of two cases (author's transl)].

Two patients with the clinical diagnosis of ataxia-telangectasia are reported. Both had a mixed partial immunodeficiency characterized by selective absence or deficiency of IgA and anergy to cutaneous antigens. During the course of their disease both patients developed a poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma of intraabdominal location. One of the patients died from infectious complications after receiving the first course of chemotherapy, while the second one remains alive under treatment. The high incidence of lymphoreticular neoplasms in early life in these patients with a genetically deficient immune system is commented upon along with the fact that, in spite of that, the pathogenesis of the syndrome remains unknown.

Spectrofluorimetric determination of sulphonamides in pharmaceutical compounds and foods.

Spectrofluorimetry and room temperature photochemically-induced fluorescence (RTPF) have been applied to the determination of sulphacetamide (SAC), sulphaguanidine (SG) and sulphamethazine (SMT) in milk and pharmaceutical formulations. The methods are suitable for determining 0.02-0.10 micrograms ml of SAC, 0.10-0.50 micrograms ml of SG, and 0.40-1.00 micrograms of SMT.

Rapid kinetic spectrophotometric determination of phosalone (Zolone) in a commercial formulation.

A kinetic study of the degradation of phosalone in an alkaline medium was undertaken by using a pneumatic stopped-flow system. A rapid semiautomatic method is proposed for determining phosalone. Linear calibration graphs up to 8.0 x 10(-5) M (detection limit = 1.40 x 10(-6) M) were obtained, with a measurement period of only 3.5 s per sample and a relative standard deviation of 1.4%. Several pesticides were assayed as interference species, and several did not interfere even at a 6:1, M:M foreign species/phosalone ratio. A strong interference (ratio < 1) was generated by azinphos-methyl and carbaryl. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of a commercial formulation, and the results were validated by comparison with those for a chromatographic method.

[Levels of carboxyhemoglobin in smokers and non-smokers from 2 cities of the Mexican high plateaux].

Carboxyhemoglobin levels (COHb) were determined in residents of two Mexican cities (Mexico City and Toluca) at altitudes of 2200 and 2600 meters above sea level. The figures in non-smokers of both cities were slightly higher than those seen at sea level by others: 1.63% in Mexico City and 1.54% in Toluca versus 0.5-1% at sea level. There were no intercity differences in smokers and non-smokers, but there were intergroup differences in both cities (p less than 0.01 in Mexico City, and p less than 0.05 in Toluca). Our findings suggest that the most important source of carbon monoxide in smokers is tobacco smoking, and that the COHb level may be reliable index to establish active smoking.

[Giant tumor thrombus in the renal vein. Diagnostic accuracy of CAT].

A clinical case of a clear-cells renal tumour, located in the left kidney, with occupation of renal vein by a 7.7 cm thick tumoral thrombus, not affecting the cava vein lumen is presented. CAT and selective left renal venography were the exploratory means which provided the diagnosis. In the study of renal vein affectation by tumoral thrombus, the CAT accuracy can be equal to that of venography, the latter being indicated in dubious cases.

Cerebral blood volume in a rat model of ischemia by MR imaging at 4.7 T.

Perturbation of the cerebral circulation by occlusion of the vertebral arteries and a carotid artery can be visualized by using MR imaging and the intravascular contrast agent Gd-DTPA complexed to albumin. This tracer consistently reduced the T1 relaxation time in the brain and blood. The difference between hemispheres was revealed by less T1 reduction in the occluded hemisphere and by an adjustment in the display contrast of images that revealed the territory of decreased perfusion. These results were confirmed by comparing them with cerebral blood flow using radioactive microspheres and the intravascular blood volume tracer 51Cr-EDTA. This method, combined with high-resolution MR imaging, can be applied to serial noninvasive studies of cerebral blood volume in ischemia and other conditions.

Semiautomatic determination of furanic aldehydes in food and pharmaceutical samples by a stopped-flow injection analysis method.

A kinetic study of the reactions of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfuraldehyde and furfural with 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) by a stopped-flow flow injection analysis technique has been undertaken. A semiautomatic method for the analytical determination of these furanic aldehydes is proposed on the basis of reaction with TBA. The proposed stopped-flow method was successfully applied to several commercial pharmaceutical preparations and food samples. The procedure is faster than the earlier procedure for determination of these compounds in foods and pharmaceuticals.

Simultaneous determination of flavor enhancers inosine 5'-monophosphate and guanosine 5'-monophosphate in food preparations by derivative spectrophotometry.

A derivative spectrophotometric method was developed for the quantitative determination of 2 flavor enhancers, inosine 5'-monophosphate (IMP) and guanosine 5'-monophosphate (GMP), in the presence of monosodium glutamate (MSG). Procedures for determining IMP and GMP singly and in binary mixtures are described. Overlapping absorption spectra of both compounds were resolved by using first-derivative spectrophotometry. By measuring the first-derivative signals of IMP and GMP at 253 and 248 nm, respectively, simultaneous determination was possible for IMP and GMP at 5-40 micrograms/mL, in the presence of up to 5000 micrograms/mL MSG. The method was satisfactorily used to determine IMP and GMP in several food preparations.
