[Surgical correction of esotropias with unstable angles (author's transl)].

The authors report on the surgical procedure for retroequatorial myopexis, with and without rearward relocation. Analysis of the surgical procedure for retroequatorial myopexis of the rectus lateralis and medialis with and without rearward relocation: 1) simple myopexis - anchoring the muscle on the sclera 14 mm from the insertion of the rectus medialis (19 mm in the case of the rectus lateralis); 2) combined procedure (myopexis and rearward relocation). Forty patients with esotropia and unstable angle, as well as clear signs of a blockage, underwent surgery. In 47% of the patients sensoric orthophoria was achieved, in 43% a significant reduction of the angle; in 5% treatment resulted in overcorrection and in 5% the angle was unchanged.

Cytogenetic study of five species of Cercopithecus.

The G- and C-banded karyotypes of five species of Cercopithecus are reported. The chromosome numbers are: for C. ascanius katangae 2 n = 66 (XX); for C. petaurista petaurista 2 n = 66 (XY); for C. mona mona 2 n = 68 (XX); for C. pogonias grayi 2 n = 72 (XY) and for C. hamlyni 2 n = 64 (XY). We always found three types of chromosome: metacentric, sub-metacentric and acrocentric. The 'marker chromosomes' typical of the Cercopithecidae are of the last type. The karyotype of C. pogonias grayi shows a characteristic pair of acrocentric autosomes which is again found in the hybrid karyotypes.

Serotonin nerve endings and regulation of pupillary diameter.

On the basis of the effects caused by 5-6-dihydroxytryptamine (5-6-DHT) on the serotonin nerve endings (chronic degeneration with depletion of the mediator), the eventual existence of serotoninergic fiber regulating pupillary diameter (PD) and intraocular pressure (IOP) was studied from a functional point of view. For the miotic effect found after administration of 5-6-DHT in rabbit, not accompanied by any change in the IOP, the hypothesis of a coparticipation of the serotoninergic fibers in the regulation of the PD is proposed, thus sustaining the concept that both PD and IOP respond to mechanisms of autonomous control. A phenomenon of receptorial supersensitivity to serotonin after the lesion of the nerve endings, dependent on 5-6-DHT, was also encountered.

Endocrine optic neuropathies.

Optic neuropathy is found as a primary disorder in a number of endocrinological diseases. The authors discuss in this respect dysfunction of the thyroid, parathyroid, suprarenals, pancreas, ovarian and hypophysis.

Opiate receptors in the rabbit iris.

Evidence pointing to the presence of opiate receptors in the rabbit iris was obtained in an in vivo study of the effects on the pupil of the intraocular injection of morphine (10--100 micrograms) and D-Ala2-met-enkephalinamide (D-Ala-E) (5--50 micrograms). Both opiates induced a significant dose-dependent decrease in pupillary size and an appreciable fluctuation of pupillary size. I.v. administration of naloxone (0.5 mg/kg) before or after injection of opiates prevented the miotic effect and the fluctuation of pupil size. The parallelism of the dose-response curves of opiates in the presence and absence of naloxone indicated competitive reversible antagonism.

[Intrafamilial variation in congenital ophthalmoplegia: studies in a Sicilian family].

Nine members of a Sicilian family, in four successive generations, showed a congenital eye defect of much variable severity, from simple blepharoptosis to complete external ophthalmoplegia, without other ocular or extraocular abnormalities. The anomaly in this pedigree was transmitted as an autosomal dominant character with incomplete penetrance and extremely variable expressivity.

Chronic degeneration of aminergic nerve endings and blood-aqueous barrier.

Chemical sympathectomy of the anterior segment of the eye was performed in rabbits with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) intravitreously injected. The response of the pupillary diameter (PD) and intraocular pressure (IOP) to NE, E and Isoproterenol was determined through instillation of the drugs in the pretreated and control eyes. The results were as follows: 1) Both PD and IOP at different intervals of time from the injection show a sharp decrease in the treated eye. 2) About four weeks after the injection, the instillation of NE and E increases the PD only in the 6-OHDA pretreated eyes, while IP administration is not effective on both control and pretreated eyes. 3) The instillation of the three drugs, while decreasing IOP in the control eyes, does not modify the already low IOP in the pretreated eyes. The authors suggest the presence of a postdenervation supersensitivity affecting only the alpha receptors, since the beta stimulant IP is inactive in both treated and untreated eyes.

Cytogenetics and taxonomy of some South Bolivian monkeys.

Illustrations are given by the authors of chromosome banding patterns of three species of monkeys: douroucouli, black-capped capuchin and squirrel monkey. The precise locality of the animals in southern Bolivia is known. This enables a taxonomic discussion on the value of some names of these animals.

[Antiglaucomatous trabeculectomy (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: The case material covers 115 glaucoma patients in whom antiglaucomatous trabeculectomy had been performed. Observation times: between a maximum of 3 years (12 cases) and a minimum period of 6 months (18 cases). CLASSIFICATION: Open-angle glaucoma 28 cases (22.8%), narrow-angle glaucoma 22 cases (19.1%), air-block glaucoma 17 cases (14.75%), other types 16 cases (13.91%). Best results were obtained with the open-angle glaucoma; surgery had reduced the pressure to normal in 85.21% of the cases. In addition, normal pressure was achieved by drug therapy in 8.8% of the cases. Good results were also obtained in glaucomas with narrow angle of iris (pressure normalization in 86.3% of the cases), as well as in combined surgery when glaucoma and cataract occurred simultaneously. The mechanism of action of the surgical procedure consists in the formation of a fistulating excretory duct covered up by a scleroconjunctival wall, generally forming a flat seepage cushion.

[The iridociliary suture (author's transl)].

During a trabeculectomy it is possible to interfere with the boundary between the iris and the ciliary body-that is with the iridociliary suture. The author describes some special features of this region which can be recognized through the operating microscope, with allusions to some aspects of optical microscopy.
