1. In horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis placental extracts show an alkaline phosphatase polymorphism which - according to ROBSON and HARRIS - depends on the fetal genotype. Investigations carried out with a series of 73 placentas revealed 5 of the common 6 phenotypes. Their frequencies were in good accordance with the figures published by the English authors. However, there had been difficulties in typing because of obscrue realizing of the patterns. 2. Although there exists a polymorphism of the heart-stable alkaline phosphatase as observed in 66 serum samples from women at delivery, only four types could be distinguished which, however, could not be related to the placental patterns with any certainty. 3. In all but one of 66 samples of cord serum, investigated simultaneously, a single band only could be observed moving at a slower speed than the serum bands of adult pregnant and non-pregnant persons. This is in conformity with the results of the other investigators. 4. In 18 samples of unheated serum the amount of heat-labile alkaline phosphatase was unimportant and did not alter the features of the heat-stable portion of the enzyme. 5. Contrary to expectations, the alkaline phosphatase polymorphism has no medicolegal relevance.

In recent years, dosage forms with sustained release have obtained a significant importance. The technological possibilities for manufacturing are described as coating, embedding and matrix procedures. The range of auxiliary substances, which are responsible for the retardation of drug activity, reaches from lipophilic compounds as lipoids, fatty alcohols and compounds which are forming hydrogels as cellulose derivatives and natural polysaccharides to synthetic polymers derived from acrylic acid. The formulation of the dosage forms requires particular care in respect to the amount of initial and maintenance doses. On account of technological processes, for example during manufacturing of tablets, under certain circumstances the liberation rate is altered. In vitro test methods allow comparisons only then when the results can be counter-checked by in vitro experiments. The release of drug follows different mechanisms, which are described, entirely or in part, to be reactions following the time law of zero or first order. In special cases, a linear correlation is observed as a function of square root of time. The calculation of given special equations for events within the dosage form is feasible from blood-level values.
Fractionated sera of patients in different stages of syphilis were examined comparatively with the TPHA-FTA(IgM)- and FTA(IgG)-test. It was shown that the TPHA-test proved to be convenient for early immunologic diagnosis of syphilis. The TPHA-test includes not only IgG anti-treponemal antibodies but also IgM antibodies. In the early stage of syphilis a reactive result of TPHA-test can be related exclusively on treponemal specific IgM antibodies.
Human sera with antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii were investigated-before and after gel filtration (Sephadex G 200)-by IgM-and IgG-specific immunofluorescent reactions as well as well by complement fixation tests.-In sera from patients with "latent" infections IgM-antibodies could not be demonstrated neither by the IgM-IFT-nor the CFT technique, although IgG antibodies with IFT titres between 1:50 qnd 1:200 were present.-In sera from patients in the "acute" stage of infection both IgM and IgG antibodies were always found. In some cases the IgG fraction had complement fixing properties only, although IgM antibodies were present as demonstrable by the IFT technique. -These observations leed to the possibility of immunologic differentiation between IgM-IFT and CF-antibodies. The role of the different antibodies in the serodiagnosis of human toxoplasmosis is discussed.
Measurements of the penicillin concentration in serum and cerebrospinal fluid patients with neurosyphilis showed that conventional therapy can attain effective treponemocidal levels for only a short time or not at all in the CSF and brain-tissue, the regions where the treponemas are found in this particular stage of disease. Intravenous infusions with high doses (0,5 mega unit penicillin-G/kg body weight in 24 hours) over more than one generation phase of the treponemas (35-43 hours) considerably improve the recovery. 16 patients were treated in this way and been followed over 2-3 years clinically and immunologically.

1. In obese patients with normal glucose tolerance the norepinephrine-induced lipolysis in vivo was significantly higher as compared with a non-obese group. This was observed both during weight-related and constant norepinephrine infusion. 2. In the obese group a discordant release of free fatty acids and glycerol and a significantly lower quotient of FFA/Glycerol than in the controls was found. It is supposed that in obesity the re-esterification of FFA is increased.
The localization of (Na+ + K+)-activated ATPase was investigated in isolated brush borders of rat small intestinal mucosa. The purity of the fractions has been checked by morphological and enzymatic criteria. The brush borders were found to contain a significant quantity of (Na+ + K+)-activated ATPase. Separation of isolated brush borders into their substructures suggests that (Na+ + K+)-activated ATPase is localized deeper within the brush border region than invertase. These findings are discussed in relation to active monosaccharide transport in the intestine.
A gel-filtration method for separating lysozyme from sera with haemolytic complement activity and/or antibody activity is described. It is shown that the gel-filtration has only a small effect, whereas bentonite absorption results in a known lost of haemolytic complement activity.
1. The condidtions were studied under which the Na+-dependently transported monosaccharides influence the K+-influx across the microvilli membrane of rat jejunum. 2. The Na+-dependent, energy requiring transport of monosaccharides causes a decrease of the K+-influx, whereas monosaccharides metabolizable by the intestinal mucosal cells - under suitable conditions - induce an increase in the K+-influx. 3. These results indicate that the K+-influx may be controlled by an energy dependent system in the microvilli membrane, which is influenced by metabolism and monosaccharide transport. It is discussed that this control system may be a (Na+ + K+)-ATPase.
