Anti-immunoglobulins and heterophil agglutinins in experimental trypanosomiasis.

Rheumatoid factor (RF)-like substances and heterophil agglutinins (HA) were induced in rabbits by infection with a strain of Trypanosoma equiperdum. Infection with a T. gambiense strain produced HA, but no RF. RFs appeared usually before immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels started to increase. They disappeared spontaneously after 4 to 6 weeks. HA were of the IgM class, appeared within 1 to 2 weeks after infection, and usually remained at high levels afterwards. They could not be absorbed out with lyophilized whole trypanosomes. Therapy suppressed the formation of RF as well as of HA, but IgG complexes as well as antibodies against trypanosomal antigens remained present for considerable periods after the installment of therapy. It is concluded that RFs are not induced by IgG complexes. The results suggest that HA are probably not cross-reacting antibodies induced by trypanosomal antigens.

Leiomyosarcoma of the pulmonary artery. A light and electronmicroscopical study.

A 25-year-old man with chest pain and shortness of breath was found to have a primary sarcoma of the pumonary artery. On light- and electronmicroscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy the lesion was found to be composed of cells of smooth muscle origin. It was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. The cross and microscopic features of the tumor are described and the morphologic characteristics of previously reported vascular sarcomas are briefly reviewed.

Large-scale production and concentration of human lymphoid interferon.

A stable and predictable production system is described for pilot plant quantities (milligram) of human lymphoid interferon, using suspension culture of an African Burkitt's lymphoma derived cell line Namalva with induction by Newcastle disease virus, B-1 strain. Cell cultures were grown in impeller-driven 50-liter fermentors with dilution of the postinduction culture using serum-free medium. High levels of dissolved oxygen were necessary for optimum cell growth. A total of 4,207 liters of interferon culture was produced in a series of 116 fermentor runs. An average yield of 3.5 log(10) international units of interferon per ml was realized before processing. Trichloroacetic acid was used to precipitate the interferon. An average of 3.35 log(10) international units of interferon per ml was recovered in the final nonpurified product.

Burkitt Lymphoma↗

[Primary spindle cell sarcoma of the pulmonary artery].

It is reported on a patient with a primary, mainly spindle-cell sarcoma of the left pulmonary artery. It is a case of a centrally located tumor, which caused a subtotal occlusion of the truncus pulmonalis and a complete occlusion of the left pulmonary artery. The diagnostical and therapeutical methods with their results and possible complications are discussed. The indication for an operation is demonstrated. In the pertinent literature hitherto 35 cases of this disease are reported.

[Arylsulfatase A and sphingomyelinase activities in the normal sciatic nerve of the rat, and in proximal and distal fragments].

We measured the protein, arylsulfatase A and sphingomyelinase activities in the total normal rat sciatic nerve and in the proximal and distal stumps. The protein level of the whole sciatic nerve (about 8 % of fresh weight) is similar to the levels of the stumps. Arylsulfatase A activity, in the total sciatic nerve as well as in the stumps is more important by gram of fresh weight than the sphingomyelinase activity. Both enzymes activities, by gram of fresh weight, are more important in the proximal stumps than in the distal ones.

[Haemangioma capillare of the pleura with ipsilateral haemopneumothorax (author's transl)].

1. The article introduces a patient with left-side haemangioma capillare of the pleura parietalis with haemopneumothorax and ipsilateral cystic changes of the left upper lobe of the l,ng. 2. The aetiopathogenesis of the disease is discussed as an abortive type of Rendu-Osler-Weber disease (hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia), the diagnosis being based exclusively on histological findings as the only possibility of diagnosis. 3. The therapeutic approach is discussed.
