Reaction time in cancer patients receiving peripherally acting analgesics alone or in combination with opioids.

Continuous Reaction Time (CRT) was measured in cancer patients receiving peripherally acting analgesics either alone (n = 16) or in combination with opioids (n = 16). Comparison was performed matching the patients from each group for age and performance status. Statistically significant prolongations of CRT and higher sedation scores were seen in the opioid group, while performance status did not have any influence on CRT.

Center-specific variations of thyroid hormone serum levels in hemodialysis patients.

Thyroid hormone (free and total thyroxine, total 3,5,3'- and 3,3'5'-triiodothyronine, thyroxine-binding globulin, thyrotropin) serum concentrations were measured in 107 uremic patients of 4 hemodialysis centers, in order to study the prevalence of hypothyroidism in hemodialysis patients. In accordance with the clinical impression there was no laboratory evidence of thyroid dysfunction. In spite of the fact that all patients had the expected low-T3 syndrome, there were highly significant differences between the mean thyroid hormone concentrations of the 4 different centers. The center with the highest thyroid hormone levels (all normal except for borderline low 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine) also had the lowest urea levels, indicating the relatively best metabolic control. One center had significantly lower hormone levels than the other 3 centers (all hormones except free thyroxine were below normal) with urea levels that did not differ significantly from one of these centers. A retrospective analysis of patients and of the techniques of dialysis of 3 centers excluded factors like heparin or the length of time on dialysis to be the reason for the low values of this center. Finally, only the significantly higher proportion of unsuccessfully transplanted patients and some technical differences (lack of water treatment, regenerated cellulose as dialyser membrane, and low magnesium content in the dialysate) unique for this center remained as possible factors that may speculatively explain the observed low thyroid hormone values.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Nonlinear polarisationoscillations in a biophysical model system II: external dynamics.

To describe a metastable electric dipole state in a biological system, Fröhlich suggested a nonlinear model potential. In this paper we investigate a system of two nonlinear dipoles, which are coupled by a dipole-dipole interaction. We apply an external field and add linear damping terms. The external drive leads to a phase-locking of the dipoles. Mathematically, the system corresponds to an externally driven anharmonic oscillator with damping. We investigate the system of coupled oscillators and look for the stable and metastable solutions as a function of the internal and external parameters.

[Influence of aging on glucose tolerance and insulin secretion (author's transl)].

Oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests were performed in three different age groups, separately for men and women. Blood glucose and insulin levels were examined. Advanced age is associated with reduced glucose tolerance independent whether it is investigated by means of intravenous or oral glucose application. Concomitant examination of plasma insulin, however, differentiates between the intravenous and the oral glucose tolerance test. While the high insulin levels after oral glucose administration are rather increasing with age, the minor insulin reaction after the intravenous glucose route is decreasing with advancing age. Results of the intravenous and the oral glucose tolerance test reveal no difference between male and female subject as long as blood sugar is examined. However, insulin levels and the insulinogenic index are consistently higher in men than in women.
