Evidence for a crossed corticorubral projection in cats with one cerebral hemisphere removed neonatally.

Tritiated amino acids were injected into the right pericruciate cortex and the projections to the red nucleus were mapped autoradiographically in 10 intact and 6 adult cats with one cerebral hemisphere (left side) removed neonatally. In the intact cats only projections to the ipsilateral red nuclei were seen. The terminals were distributed along the entire rostrocaudal extent, but the density of the label was greater in the ventral and medial aspects of the nucleus. In the hemispherectomized cats projections to both red nuclei were found. The topography of the terminals was similar to that seen in intact animals. This finding, together with other changes which we have described, suggests that an extensive structural reorganization may occur after removal of one cerebral hemisphere in cats.

A quality control study to assess the inter-laboratory variability of routine estrogen and progesterone receptor assays.

The steroid hormone receptor laboratories of Bern, Basel, Zürich, Locarno, Lausanne and Geneva have participated in a quality control study to assess potential inter-laboratory variability in results of tests for determination of steroid hormone receptor status in human breast tumor biopsies. Homogeneous breast tumor powders containing low, medium and high concentrations of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) were prepared in Bern and dispatched on solid CO2 to each laboratory within 1 day of preparation. Each laboratory was requested to assay each powder for ER and PR by their usual procedures. The results revealed that the quantitative discrepancies in ER and PR binding values among the participants could be attributed in part to variations in the methods used for measuring cytosol protein content and also to the differences in hormone receptor assay methods. Nevertheless, all of the laboratories were able to identify the samples containing low, medium and high concentrations of ER and PR.

Presence of sex steroid hormone receptors in meningioma tissue.

Meningiomas from 10 patients were studied for the presence of sex hormone receptors. No meningioma was found to have estrogen receptors, while 4 had no receptors. The presence of progesterone receptors was independent of the age or sex of the patient, whereas androgen receptors were found only in postmenopausal women. The possible relationship between the epidemiological characteristics of meningiomas and the presence of sex hormone receptors is discussed.

[Measurement of carbohydrate oxidation by means of indirect continuous calorimetry in normal and diabetic subjects].

The use of continuous indirect calorimetry in the course of a 100 g OGTT in 10 normal subjects has shown that carbohydrate oxidation rises with the secondary fall in blood glucose, suggesting that it could result from glucose stored under the influence of insulin. The experimental increase in FFA by a neutral fat infusion in 8 normal subjects decreased this oxidation in spite of the insulin rise. In a group of 5 non-obese, non-ketotic insulin-deficient diabetics, carbohydrate oxidation was found to be normal and directly correlated with plasma glucose levels. On the other hand, in 7 obese diabetics with high plasma insulin levels carbohydrate oxidation was found to be low, suggesting that carbohydrate intolerance could result from the non-oxidation of glucose. This study shows heterogeneity of diabetes, since glucose intolerance could result from non-oxidation of glucose as well as from insufficient pancreatic secretion.
