Age differences in health attitudes and beliefs.

In a telephone interview, samples of 196 older and 280 younger adults completed a series of 24 items designed to assess health beliefs. Differences may have implications for health care expenditures now and in the future.

Meanings of death and intrinsic religiosity.

The objective of this study was to simplify understandings of relationships between multidimensional elements of the fear of death and dying with a unidimensional construct of intrinsic religiosity. A total of 346 individuals who ranged in age from 18 to 88 completed a death anxiety scale and a measure of intrinsic religious motivation. Respondents who were older and who were higher in intrinsic religiosity were significantly lower in death anxiety. Differing constructions of death and dying are examined.

Cigarette smoking: effect on perceptions of source credibility.

This study examined the effect of cigarette smoking on the perceptions of source credibility. A sample of smokers and nonsmokers were recruited (N = 272) and randomly assigned to view one of four versions of a photograph: male with cigarette, female with cigarette, male without cigarette, and female without cigarette. Perceptions of the photographs were then recorded using a credibility scale. Nonsmoking models were rated significantly higher than smokers in competency, character, and composure while smoking models received significantly higher marks than nonsmokers in extroversion.

Political behavior: voting participation of inner-city elderly blacks compared to other populations in a medium-sized city.

Voting participation was examined across nine elections in Omaha, Nebraska. Voting frequencies of all eligible voters in the city, all elderly eligible voters, and a random sample of inner-city elderly black voters were compared. The analysis shows that frequency of voting among inner-city elderly black individuals was the same as among all elderly persons in seven of the nine elections and significantly higher than that found among eligible voters of all ages in all nine of the elections.

Death anxiety and religion in an older male sample.

A death anxiety scale and a measure of intrinsic religious motivation were completed by 103 older white men. The correlation of scale scores was nonsignificant. Afterlife items on the death anxiety scale did correlate significantly with the intrinsic religious motivation score. Other elements of religiosity, such as religious behaviors, may be related to elements of death anxiety.

Elements of death anxiety and meanings of death.

The objectives of this study were: (1) to test hypotheses that women would have higher death anxiety than men and that older persons would have lower death anxiety than younger people; and (2) to probe for meanings of death among a large, heterogeneous sample. A group of 599 adolescents and adults completed a death anxiety scale; factor analysis of the resultant data revealed seven orthogonal factors. Both hypotheses were supported at acceptable levels of significance. Item analysis revealed additional information on meanings of death: Older respondents indicated a concern over the existence of an afterlife and over loss of personal control; women expressed more fear of pain and bodily decomposition. The strongest finding was variation in death anxiety by age, which confirms Butler's contention that the life review helps the aged to resolve conflicts and relieve anxiety.

Primary biliary cirrhosis and the CREST syndrome: a report of 22 cases.

The syndrome of primary biliary cirrhosis and limited scleroderma (the CREST syndrome) is described in 22 patients. The syndrome is expanded to include a serologic marker--the anticentromere antibody--and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The acronym 'PACK' (primary biliary cirrhosis, anticentromere antibody, CREST syndrome, and keratoconjunctivitis sicca) with 'syndrome' is suggested to facilitate recall of the various components of this entity.

An association between HLA DRI and lichen planus.

Serological typing for HLA Class II antigens in 72 patients with lichen planus (LP) revealed a highly significant association with HLA DRI and MTI (DQWI). DRI was present in 80% of patients with generalized LP, 54% with localized LP, 56% of patients with drug-induced LP and in 31% of patients with mucosal LP, compared with 25% of normal controls. MTI (DQWI) was found in 83% of the LP group and 62% of the normal controls. These findings strongly suggest a genetic predisposition or susceptibility to the development of generalized LP and perhaps also to drug-induced LP.

Histopathologic and immunopathologic study of pyoderma gangrenosum.

Sixty-three patients with pyoderma gangrenosum were seen and studied at the Mayo Clinic from 1971 to 1980. Biopsies from the erythematous border or necrotic edge of the pyoderma gangrenosum lesions usually demonstrated a characteristic pathogenic morphologic evolution. The early lesions revealed mild to moderate perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate associated with endothelial swelling. The fully developed lesions demonstrated necrosis in addition to a dense lymphocytic infiltration surrounding as well as involving the blood vessels. Extravasation of erythrocytes and thrombosis sometimes were seen. Ulceration, infarction, and abscess formation were found in the later stages of evolution. Direct immunofluorescence results were positive in the blood vessels of 36 of 65 (55%) specimens. IgM, C3, and fibrin were found in the papillary and reticular dermal vessels. IgG and IgA were only occasionally present. Pyoderma gangrenosum appears to be a reactive process that is manifested as a vasculitis. Biopsy material from the advancing active erythematous border has early characteristic dermatopathologic findings of lymphocytic vasculitis. Cutaneous vascular immune deposits suggest an immune pathogenesis of either an immune complex disease or lymphocytotoxic reaction.
