The influence of varying the muscular afferent fiber input on both the normal firing rate (Fn) and the amount of recurrent inhibition (Fn-Fi) induced by a constant ventral root stimulation was investigated on tonic extensor motoneurons recorded from ventral root filaments in decerebrate cats. The afferent input was varied by graded electrical stimulation of the gastrocnemius nerves and by vibrating the triceps surae muscle (100 mum amplitude). When the input consisted solely of impulses in Ia afferents, as was the case during vibration, the mean recurrent inhibition Fn-Fi was 2.3 times greater than during nerve tetanization at 1.8 times threshold of group I (TI). This strength generally excited all group I and some low-threshold group II afferents. Between 1.8 TI and 8 TI, Fn-Fi decreased by some 50%. The average Fn increased slightly and motoneurons with a phasic discharge pattern were recruited when the stimulus strength was raised so as to excite group II afferents; these cells were never recruited during vibration and nerve tetanization at 1.8 TI. The results indicate the possibility of a disinhibitory action of secondary muscle spindle afferents on extensor motoneurons by reducing the recurrent inhibition.

In a series of 320 consecutive patients referred because of precordial pain, the costosternal syndrome was found to be the underlying cause in 21, while in nine others, this syndrome was found to be coexisting with coronary heart disease. In our opinion, because of the current readiness to diagnose coronary artery disease, local causes for chest pain often are overlooked. The frequency of this syndrome is relatively high, both as a sole cause of chest pain and combined with coronary artery disease. Local injection of steroids was followed by improvement in the majority of our patients.
Patients with certain forms of cataract or corneal disease have diminished visual acuity in a brightly lit environment. This is due to increased light scattering, which causes increased glare sensitivity. In a series of experiments, a sequence of bottles containing a suspension of latex particles was used to simulate the effect of different degrees of cataract and corneal edema on visual acuity. It was shown that anodized honeycombs could substantially improve visual acuity through the latex-containing bottles. The mechanism of visual improvement was shown to be by reduction of glare and increase in contrast.
In evaluation of the hospital statistics a survey is given on the kinds of intoxication and their frequency, age distribution and lethality. It is elaborated the necessity of the concentration of patients with intoxications, in order to decrease the lethality. An organisation model for the GDR is designed and the author adopts a definite attitude to th establishment of intoxication centres.
Intoxication with medicaments which do not belong to the class of sedatives or psychopharmaca are often underestimated and not treated in hospital if they have no influence on the sensorium. In the Central First Aid and Intensive Therapy Department Berlin-Friedrichshain about 400-500 patients with drug intoxications of all kind are treated annually. Out of these on the average 30 intoxications are not conditioned by psychopharmaca, sedatives or analgesics. In these intoxications the drugs in question are above all cardio-active medicaments (glycosides and antiarrhythmics), rauwolfia and ergot alkaloids as well as industry and household chemicals. 3 patients with such intoxications are described concerning their clinical symptomatology, the course and the therapy.
Following a short discussion of hitherto known facts about glutethimid intoxications, two own cases are described. In these cases minimal amounts (2.5 and 5 g) caused haemorrhagic diatheses and acute insufficiency of the liver, which in one case were combined with acute renal insufficiency. Possible causes are discussed.
The purpose of this investigation was to see whether or not the hypothetical disease susceptibility locus to ankylosing spondylitis is linked to the MLC determinant 27a. Firstly, we discovered a strong MLC determinant which we called 27a because of its association with the second series specificity W27. Later, we found that this determinant was the same as that which Jorgensen et al. (1973) found to be associated with the second series specificity W5. These MLC determinants may, therefore, be in linkage disequilibrium with more than one HL-A specificity (in this case, of the second series) as previously described by Dupont et al. (1973). However, we found no association between 27a and ankylosing spondylitis. On the other hand, we confirmed the association of ankylosing spondylitis with W27 and also found an increase of HL-A2 of the first series which, however, was not statistically significant. In view of the high incidence of HL-A2 in the general population, more information is required to definitely establish such an association. We found no special association with specificities AJ and Hu (Sa 532), third series antigens, but confirmed their linkage disequilibrium with W27. Disease predisposition loci seem, therefore, to be associated with either type of MHS marker, multiple sclerosis and MLC determinant 7a, or ankylosing spondylitis and the second series antigen W27. It will be interesting to discover whether there is any special significance of the association of one marker rather than another.
