Cardiovascular effects of novel amphetamine analogs in anesthetized rats.

In albino, adult Sprague Dawley rats, anesthetized with urethane intraperitoneally, the effects of the exo- and endo-isomers of 2-amino-5,8-dimethoxybenzonorbornene were studied on arterial blood pressure and heart rate. Both compounds produced an immediate rise in systemic arterial pressure followed by an immediate maximal depressor response. The depressor effect was sustained beyond 30 minute duration, but declined in intensity with time to nearly preinjection levels. Both compounds decreased heart rate in varying degrees. Evidence of marked bradycardia and onset of toxicity was observed at doses of 12.8 mg/kg (exo) and 19.2 mg/kg (endo). The biphasic response seen after intravenous injection of the compounds suggests an initial vasoconstrictory followed by a vasodilatory effect.

Blood transfusion in children with cancer.

Blood component therapy in children with cancer continues as a major factor in all treatment programs. Current research in this area promises significant advances in the near future. Better methods of procurement, Storage, matching of donors and recipients, and investigations of granulocyte transfusions will all contribute to better supportive care and treatment of complications in cancer patients.

Changes in antigenic nature of lymphocytes caused by common viruses.

Healthy human lymphocytes were incubated in the presence of influenza A2/Singapore/57, herpes simplex type 1, or adenovirus type 2. After two days the cultures were inactivated by irradiation. Fresh lymphocytes taken from the same donor were then found to react to the virus-treated cells in short-term cultures. We suggest that this reactivity is due to a change in the surface characteristics of the lymphocytes brought about by the presence of the virus. This may account for anomalous reactions in mixed lymphocyte cultures, and a similar effect in vivo might cause accelerated graft rejection.
