[Optimization in planning and application of 60 Co gamma irradiations - analysis of the problem (author's transl)].

As an aspect of the complex problem of optimization in therapeutical transmission of radiation energy to Man, the dose distribution within a cross-sectional area of the body is considered. For the judgement on optimal dose distributions, involving judgement on irradiation technique, boundary conditions are needed which encompass important parameters of a dose distribution (= criterion for optima). For computer-assisted optimization the boundary conditions are to be scheduled by an appropriate algorithm. The parameters describing a dose distribution are indicated. Practical utilization of computer-assisted optimization of dose is represented by means of two optimization schedules.

[Wood's alloy, a material suitable for quick production of individualized shielding blocks in the mantle technique (author's transl)].

The extended radiation therapy of lymphogranulomatosis by means of the mantle technique requires individualized focussed satelittes. The production of such individualized, ray divergences considering "lead mantles", however, needs some technical expenditure and causes loss of time. Using Wood's alloy, which has a shielding capacity similar to lead but is well and easily workable because of its low melting point, it is possible to obtain individually adjusted shielding blocks by casting.

[The complex radiological diagnosis of brain tumours (author's transl)].

By means of 50 cases of brain tumours the diagnostic rank of angiography, brain scintigraphy and pneumencephalography was determined. With combined inset of angiography and scintigraphy it was possible to reach a pretherapeutical correct diagnosis in 94% of the cases. The pneumencephalography was made additionally in 23 patients and useful additional informations about processes near by the ventricles were reached.

[A modified method for labeling erythrocytes with 99mTc (author's transl)].

A modified method for labeling erythrocytes with 99mTc-sodium pertechnetate for spleenic scintigraphy is described. In vitro investigations have shown that by omitting the customary process of washing and by simultaneous alteration of the erythrocytes during the tin incubation period, the duration of erythrocyte labeling can be considerably reduced. A yield of 96 of 98% can be achieved. The effect of the tin on the erythrocytes is further investigated. The effect of the incubation period and temperature, of the plasma in the erythrocyte suspension, of stirring and agitation, of the dispersion liquid and tin concentration were studied. The method proves satisfactory in 56 controlled spleenic scintigrams.

[Radiogenic nephritis in relation to splenectomy and irradiation of the spleen bed].

Five cases are reported where under curative aspects the splenic region was irradiated during radiation therapy of lymphogranulomatosis. In the course of this treatment, a radiation load amounting to 3000 up to 4200 R focal dose occurred to the upper pole of the left kidney. A LESION OF THE LEft kidney was diagnosed not earlier than nine or twelve months afterwards in three of the patients. Two patients could be followed up as yet only four or five months. As for verification of the circumscribed radiogenic nephritis, renal scintigraphy proved the best technique to provide information. Short-term check-up examinations are necessary for the purposes of early recognition and efficient therapy of this complication, the prognosis of lymphogranulomatosis being on the whole relatively good.

[Splenectomy in Hodgkin's disease--indication and results (author's transl)].

The spleen is involved in 20-30 percent of patients with Hodgkin's disease. Involvement of the spleen cannot be excluded with reliability by radiological procedures or clinical chemistry. Therefore laparotomy and splenectomy are recommended as staging and therapeutic measures. In the authors's material, splenectomy showed splenic lesions in 9 out of 21 patients, mostly unexpected. Splenectomy is always indicated in stage II and should be taken into consideration in individual cases of stages I and III, too.
