Studies are presented which demonstrate the pathological effects of diethylnitrosamine (DENA) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in the liver of chickens. DENA, which has been shown to cause tumors in rats and chickens, was tested on 80 laying hens to determine whether changes in the liver during hepatocarcinogenesis were similar to those observed in rats. In addition, the hepatocarcinogenic and cocarcinogenic properties of Clophen C (CC), a technical mixture of low chlorinated biphenyls was tested on chickens. The livers of test animals were examined histologically for preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions. Histochemical methods were used to determine lipid and glycogen contents as well as changes in activity of alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase. Putative preneoplastic lesions in the liver were first observed according to the substance and dosage applied as follows: DENA 1 X weekly (group II), beginning on day 258; DENA 2 X weekly (group III), beginning on day 183; and CC + DENA 2 X weekly (group V), beginning on day 231. Application of CC alone did not induce lesions. The concept that CC has cocarcinogenic capability was substantiated by the fact that animals from group V (CC + DENA 2 X weekly) developed twice as many tumors as did animals from group III (DENA 2 X weekly). Additionally, tumors developed earlier in the former group than in the latter.
The small intestine has a high enzymatic activity, a continuous peristalsis and almost no compliance. The physiological parameters tend to complicate ileoanal anastomosis. For nearly 10 years experiments have been done by pouches, myotomies and myectomies to enlarge the compliance and to stop peristalsis. In some hospitals these sophisticated procedures do not cause any problems, in others they do. There is an average of about 40% of complications. Inspite of all, these operative techniques are accepted by most patients because they prevent the permanent ileostomy. To improve the results, further clinical and experimental studies are necessary.
This report describes a new technique by which arthroscopy of the hip provides complete visualization of the joint space. The arthroscope and operative instruments are inserted by a direct lateral approach over the greater trochanter, with the patient in the lateral decubitus position. The involved leg is held in an abducted and flexed position with traction by pulleys hung overhead. Hip abduction and flexion relaxes the capsule and traction separates the joint so that insertion of the arthroscope is facilitated. Arthroscopic examination of the hip joint was performed in 11 patients. The indications for surgery included diagnosis of unresolved hip pain following failure of conservative treatment, removal of loose bodies, exploration and debridement following fracture and/or dislocation, and evaluation of the arthritic hip prior to definitive surgery.

Enzyme release was studied in various tissues in intact animals or by means of tissue slices, organ perfusion or isolated and cultured cells. The factors that determine the extent and the time course of the leakage were studied extensively with several liver enzymes. It was found that the molecular properties of the enzymes, their topology within the organ, their intracellular localisation, their inducibility on the one hand, the nutritional and energetic state of the organ, and the respective protein turnover on the other, and finally, the type of the organ lesion all contribute to the different release patterns, which are known from experimental studies, and which are utilized for the diagnosis of diseases. While these preconditions of enzyme release are fairly well understood, the nature of the membrane alterations and the mechanism of detachment and transport of the enzyme proteins are less clear. Different models have been proposed, which may not exclude each other. Alterations of the cytoskeleton and the lipid composition of the plasma membranes are closely linked to ion imbalance, which is, in turn, dependent on the energy state of the individual cellular compartments.
In the case discussed, the faculties retained and lost are described, and the aims and tasks of rehabilitation set out. The mode of procedure is elucidated by means of examples, the results achieved given, and the possible basis for the effectivity of the rehabilitation measures discussed.

The diffuse peritonitis is a syndrome during the course of which biochemical reactive chains are activated according to a cascade principle. Most of these biochemical reactive chains develop within an acid environment. The solutions applied for abdominal lavage so far had neutral pH value. The present acute peritonitis experiment has shown that a peritoneal pH increase during lavage therapy stopped the septic reactive chain and thus improved significantly the rate of survival in the test animals. These experimental findings ar now subject for clinical examination.

The following 10 species of bat ticks and mites have been determined in the material collected in the territory of the district: Ixodes (E.) vespertilionis, Argas (C.) vespertilionis, Spinturnix myoti, S. mystacinus, S. acuminatus, S. plecotinus, Macronyssus flavus, Steatonyssus (S.) periblepharus, S. (S.) spinosus and Notoedres chiropteralis. Some data concerning the frequency of the occurrence of mites from the family Spinturnicidae are given.
Infant mortality in North-Rhine Westphalia was increased above the national average throughout the postwar period until today. To clarify the underlying causes the official death certificates of infants who died during their first year were linked to their respective birth certificates. Thus, the amount of data about each individual case was increased considerably. The information collected was then evaluated. An especially high mortality was associated with the maternal risk factors illegitimacy, age below 20 and Turkish nationality. Perinatal mortality was high in the groups of Turkish nationals, and unmarried mothers. Socially underprivileged groups on the whole proved to contribute a high amount of postneonatal mortality. Predominant causes of postneonatal mortality were infections, injuries and the diagnosis "sudden infant death syndrome".

The circumsporozoite genes and flanking sequences of the Ceylon, Gombak, London, NIH and Mulligan strains of the Plasmodium cynomolgi complex were isolated by molecular cloning and compared. About 11,000 bases of the Gombak clone were mapped in detail and found to have their exact counterparts in all the other strains. In contrast the epitope-encoding region, a 600-base sequence consisting of short tandem repeats, exhibited no homology with any of the other clones. These findings show that different regions of the circumsporozoite gene evolve in sharply different modes.

Presented is the case of a 62-year-old man with refractory shock secondary to copper sulfate ingestion. The patient's history was complicated by the presence of peptic ulcer disease, myocardial disease, and a known abdominal aortic aneurysm. Despite the presence of such characteristic signs and symptoms as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, hemolytic anemia, and refractory hypotension, the diagnosis of copper sulfate ingestion was delayed for several days after ingestion, when the family first volunteered that the patient had vomited blue-green material the day before his admission to the hospital. This delay contributed significantly to the patient's ultimate demise.
