Bioadhesive and histotoxic properties of ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate.

Ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate was applied to the cortex of rabbits to evaluate its bioadhesive and histotoxic behavior. The animals were killed at 4 or 10 days. Half of the animals were pretreated with dexamethasone. Our results indicate that the application of ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate to brain tissue produced severe superficial cortical necrosis but not bioadhesion. Pretreatment with steroids did not provide a significant protective effect.

Reversible neuroaudiologic findings in a case of right frontal lobe abscess with recovery.

A patient with a large right frontal lobe abscess was administered a battery of audiologic and neuroaudiologic tests. Results indicated a definite central auditory processing deficit with essentially normal peripheral hearing. The same test battery was given three months later, after the abscess had completely resolved. The neuroaudiological results on retest were essentially normal for the entire test battery. The specific central auditory processing deficit noted in this case is discussed, along with details of the neuroaudiologic assessment.

[Clinical and electroencephalographic follow-up of consciousness disorders].

A report is given of the experience gained in close-meshed neurological and electroencephalographic observations of unconscious patients suffering from acute and severe brain damage of different aetiology. Only in some cases can the neurological findings be assigned to the midbrain or bulbar brain syndromes - in our material this is possible only after skull-brain traumas and subarachnoid haemorrhage but least of all after hypoxic accidents and brain operations. The vegetative functions often show inconsistency and do not always correspond with the rest of the neurological findings. Selected examples are used to make an assessment of electroencephalography in the interpretation of severe and acute brain damage.

Postradiation motor neuron syndrome.

We report an unusual case of selective lower motor neuron syndrome (MNS) complicating whole neuraxis radiation therapy. Only three well-documented similar cases have been found in a thorough review of the literature. The syndrome has a stereotyped time course and is self-limited. We discuss here possible pathogenetic mechanisms and their relationship to motor neuron disease.

Shunt system patency testing by lumbar infusion.

A simple and reliable bedside infusion test is described to evaluate shunt-system patency in adult patients with treated "normal" pressure hydrocephalus. Fifteen consecutive patients with ventriculoperitoneal shunts were tested by a two-part infusion test between 2 days and 32 months after shunt surgery. When we used the criteria presented, shunt patency could be established with certainty, and shunt malfunction could be established with relative certainty. Shunt malfunction was verified surgically.
