Lepromatous leprosy and contact dermatitis.

The rare association of lepromatous leprosy and allergic contact dermatitis due to chromium in cement was confirmed clinically and biologically in a male patient. The apparent lack of influence of lepromatous leprosy on the development and maintenance of this dermatitis dependent upon cell-mediated immune mechanisms is discussed.

[Psoriatic arthropathy. A study of its frequency and clinical features in 112 psoriatic patients].

In order to determine the incidence and clinical features of psoriatic arthropathy 112 psoriatic patients have been studied. The following conclusions have been shown: 1. the incidence ratio male: female was near 2: 1 in the skin disease; 2. a prevalence of 15% has been observed in the psoriatic arthropathy, showing similar incidence in both sexes; 3. when the onset of the skin disease were analyzed either alone or with arthropathy, different frequency profiles were demonstrated; that suggest they are different biological events; 4. neither the age of onset nor the severity of the arthropathy, show any relationship with the severity of the skin disease; 5. both, negative latex and the elevation of the sedimentation rate are of value for diagnostic purposes.

Delayed cerebral radionecrosis following treatment of basal cell carcinoma.

Delayed radiation necrosis of the brain was found around the right ear in a patient with basal cell carcinoma of the skin. Five months after excision, the tumor recurred. The patient received 5,575 rads in 24 doses during radiotherapy. Thirteen months later, the patient had cerebral radionecrosis, which was the cause of death. At autopsy, typical radionecrotic lesions of the temporal lobe were found. There were widespread metastases.

[Ultrastructural aspects of juvenile xanthogranuloma].

An ultrastructural study of a juvenile xanthogranuloma is presented. Foamy histiocytes reveal several vacuoles of irregular profile containing a type of lipid which is not fixed by osmium tetraoxide. There are also myelin figures. Plasmatic membrane shows numerous digit-like foldings related to collagen fibers. Cytoplasm containing few organelles are restricted to a narrow band around the nucleus and delicate trasverse bandings among the vacuoles. Several intranuclear spheroidal corpuscles have been identified in the histiocytes. Genesis of these foamy histiocytes is discussed probably related to a metabolic derangement of an organelle but in no way related to phagocytosis of fragmented polymorphonuclear leukocytes or Lymphocytes.

[Migrant workers in the metropolitan area of Monterrey].

"In this article, an analysis is made of evidence regarding the metropolitan area of Monterrey, [Mexico]....[A] study carried out in 1965 is used as a point of reference, and information is analyzed for 1980 and 1983. In the first section of this article, a brief summary is provided of some of the recent contributions that have been made to the study of the profitability of internal migration. The second part is devoted to an analysis of the 1980 and 1983 surveys, focussing on the features distinguishing recent migratory workers and the rest of the work force...and on the factors determining income, with special interest in the category of migrants....Lastly, a summary of the main findings is presented." Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus--clinical, histopathological and immunophenotypical study of five cases.

Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) is a recently described distinct subset of lupus erythematosus (LE) having characteristic clinical, serological and genetic features. The clinicopathological and serological findings of 5 patients are reported. From a clinical point of view, we describe two types of cutaneous lesions: psoriasiform and annular pattern. ANA were present in 80% of the cases, anti-Ro was present in 60%, and anti-La in 20%; anti-RNP was positive in 1 patient. Circulating immune complexes were detected in 2 patients, and low levels of complement factors (C3, C4) in another 2 patients. The B- cell alloantigens HLA-A2, HLA-Bw4 or HLA-DR3 were present in 60% of the cases. The cutaneous histopathology revealed important changes in the epidermis. Our findings are similar to those described by most other authors. Also, we would like to emphasize the low disease activity and benign course of our patients.

[Dermatomyositis. Clinico-histologic study of its skin manifestations].

The clinical and pathological findings in five patients with dermatomyositis are described. The diagnostic value of the cutaneous lesions in the disease, indicating the histological patterns of each cutaneous sign is stressed. Based in our experience and in the reviewed literature, we consider that Gottron's papules and poikilodermatomyositis present histological aspects that allow us to confirm the diagnosis suspected by clinical findings. Likewise we review some special difficult aspects of the disease such as infantile forms, association with neoplasias and overlap syndromes.

Contact dermatitis by sensitization to amine-type antioxidants.

Numerous reports had been published implicating IPPD and other amine-type antioxidants as the causative agents in patients with allergic sensitization following the use of industrial and household products that have black rubber in their composition. The amine-type antioxidants, used to stabilize the polymer chains and to prevent rubber from cracking, are the agents more frequently implicated in this type of contact allergic dermatitis. Based on a case of a patient who had erythematous edematous and vesiculous processes in the periocular region that appeared a few hours after the use of a video camera with a black rubber eyepiece, we reviewed the clinical features, and the etiological agents of this infrequent form of contact dermatitis. This patient represents the first described case in the literature of allergic sensitivity after the use of a video camera eyepiece.

Lymphocyte populations and subpopulations in some lymphoproliferative dermatoses.

We present a study of lymphocyte populations and subpopulations as seen in histological cuts of skin with malignant and benign lymphoproliferative alterations using the immunological and histochemical techniques later described. Disclosed are the results of samples obtained of lymphocyte populations which were used to help differentiate between said alterations. It is proven that in T cell lymphomas. The infiltrate is dominated by markers for EA IgM which correlates with the results of other authors in peripheral blood.

Secondary urticaria due to toxocariasis: possibly caused by ingesting raw cattle meat?

Skin affectation in patients infected by Toxocara spp. is rare even in endemic regions. We present a case of a patient that consulted us for a urticarial process and a personal history of eating rat cattle meat. After several studies, the diagnosis of secondary urticaria due to Toxocara spp. infection was made. Improvement of the symptoms was observed after treatment with thiabendazole.
