A woman was noted to have chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia, pigmentary degeneration of retina and third degree AV block. She was admitted to hospital because of syncopes and was successfully treated with a permanent pacemaker. Since 1958, 12 similar cases have been noted. Three of 7 patients without pacemaker treatment died, and 5 were successfully treated with pacemaker. The disturbances in AV-conduction are not thought to be a mere coincidence to the ocular disorder. Cardiomyopathy has been suggested.
Increasing incidence of Down's syndrome with advancing paternal age for given maternal age has been demonstrated. Comparisons are made between an almost complete Down's syndrome sample from the Copenhagen Metropolitan Area and a randomly selected sample of births from the same area and the same time period. Men above 55 years have a significantly increased risk of getting children with Down's syndrome.
During one year 1390 samples of pasteurized milk products from five different dairies were examined for content of B. cereus. The examination was done on the day of packaging and after incubation at 17 degrees C for 24 hrs. as well. On examination on the day of packaging 8.1 % were positive. No difference could be demonstrated between low-temperature pasteurized and high-temperature pasteurized products. However, differences were found from one plant to another (2.1 %--14.5 %). After incubation B. cereus were isolated from 17.2 % of low-temperature pasteurized samples and from 22.8 % of high-temperature pasteurized products. The occurrence of B. cereus varied according to season. In July-September the level of contamination was 40 %. It is concluded that during summer months bacteriological examination of dairy products should be supplemented with an examination for B. cereus. This could provide a valuable tool in checking the efficiency of dairy cleaning.
The aim of the study was to obtain incidence figures for Down's syndrome throughout a period where a considerable change in the age distribution of child-bearing mothers has taken place and to study if the expected fall in incidence has occurred. In parts of the Copenhagen Metropolitan area 235 liveborn patients with Down's syndrome were ascertained in the period 1960 to 1971 in a population of 1-2 million with a total of 204771 births. All patients available were examined cytogenetically (75%). In 160 (90-4%) a regular trisomy 21 was observed. In 6-2% of the cases translocations and in 2-3% of the cases mosaics were found. Two double trisomies and a double trisomy mosaic were observed. Throughout the period 1960-71 the percentage of women over 30 years delivering children decreased from 23-4% in the beginning of the period to 16-2% at the end of the period. In the first part of the period 52-6% of the cases were born to mothers over 30, at the end of the period 40% of Down's syndrome mothers were of that age. However, the incidence was unchanged throughout the whole period, about 1-15 per 1000 births. For some age groups a steady rise in incidence of trisomy 21 cases was found throughout the whole period. These findings may be explained by better ascertainment of patients at the end of the period; however, environmental factors may also play a role.
The new 5HT-uptake inhibitor, FG 4963, and some tricyclic thymoleptics antagonized p-chloroamphetamine (PCA)-induced hypermotility in rats. FG 4963 was active in about the same s.c. and p.o. doses as chlorimipramine. FG 4963, imipramine and chlorimipramine potentiated hypermotility induced in mice by the 5HT precursor 5HTP, FG 4963 being slighly more active than chlorimipramine. In contrast to the tricyclic thymoleptics FG 4963 did not potentiate the heart rate increasing effect of NA in pithed rats. The peripheral anticholinergic effect of FG 4963 and of desipramine was almost identical while the other imipramine derivatives were more active. All tricyclic thymoleptics were strong peripheral antihistaminics, but FG 4963 was almost devoid of this action. Acute tests for ECG changes in guinea pigs and toxicity in mice and rats showed that FG 4963 and chlorimipramine were less toxic than imipramine and amitriptyline. FG 4963 is presumably a selective 5HT-uptake inhibitor producing much less potentiation of peripheral sympathetic mechanisms than do the tricyclic antidepressants.

Serum immunoglobulin concentrations were measured in 40 patients with calcific pancreatitis. A significant elevation of the mean serum IgA and IgG concentration when compared with a control group was found. The IgA was raised in 50% and the IgG in 27.5% when the individual results were assessed. The IgA did not appear to be of the secretory type. The possible significance of the raised IgA and IgG is discussed with reference to local pancreatic IgA production, autoimmune factors in chronic pancreatitis, and the ductal protein plugs in this disease.

Thirty-six patients received an intravenous bolus injection of 2 g cefoxitin over 5 min at various times before abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy. Cefoxitin levels in myometrium and salpinges were substantially higher than those in endometrium and almost as high as those in serum during the first two hours following the i. v. administration of the drug. Tissue concentrations of 8 micrograms/g could be maintained for two hours. The cefoxitin tissue concentrations attained in myometrium, endometrium and salpinges justify controlled prospective clinical studies on the prevention of postoperative wound infections with this antibiotic.
