Tubes, wires, and rods seen in chest roentgenograms.

Different devices are seen on chest roentgenograms everyday. The gamut of metallic density shadows include sutures, surgical clips, staples, cardiac valve prosthesis, wires, and plates. Tubes and catheters are recognized when metallic wires or barium are incorporated in their walls. The number of devices is ever growing and with them complications grow. The radiologist may be the first to detect these complications. This article endeavors to review briefly a small number of these devices and their complications. References are provided for the avid reader.

Some uncommon lower mediastinal densities: a pictorial essay.

Despite CT and NMR, plain radiography still plays a major role in the diagnosis of mediastinal disease. In this article, the value and limitations of conventional techniques in the diagnosis of some unusual lesions of the lower mediastinum are demonstrated.

Neoplastic complications of neurofibromatosis.

Neurofibromatosis associated with secondary neoplasms is discussed. Neurosarcomas are the most common and most malignant secondary tumors in neurofibromatosis. Any sudden growth in a peripheral tumor in this disease should alert the physician to the possibility of malignant change and the need for biopsy. Only by early diagnosis and adequate excision can some of these patients be saved.

Photographic method of recording radiation fields using the localizer light for illumination.

By interposing a camera with a fish-eye lens between the collimator and the illuminated field, radiotherapy ports can be recorded using the localizer light for illumination. An acrylic mold of the camera was used to maintain alignment and immobilization during the necessarily long exposures. The authors consider this a very objective and accurate method of recording the topography of radiation ports.

Perilesional vitiligo in melanoma.

The malignant transformation of a plantar nevus is presented. Perilesional vitiligo developed concurrently with the onset of malignancy. The primary lesion was controlled surgically, but the patient succumbed to metastiatic melanoma within a year. The relation of perilesional vitiligo in malignant melanoma to the so-called halo nevus, and the immunologic significance of these discolorations is reviewed.

The radiographic wall-signs of ovarian dermoids.

Ovarian dermoids posses a distinct fibrous capsule which may be recognized radiographically by virtue of the contrasting effect of the greasy dermoid matter and the surrounding peritoneal fat. Part or all of the wall may be outlined in some projections even when the dermoid contents are not radiolucent enough to be recognized as such. Occasionally the wall of a dermoid cyst, heavily calcified or ossified, may be easily recognized radiographicaly.
