The authors report the results obtained investigating PT - PTT - Fbg - Alcohol test - FDP - AT III in the serum and FDP in the ascitic fluid of 18 patients with ovarian cancer, 2 patients with pelvic relapse of cervical cancer and 10 patients with cirrhosis of the liver. It is pointed out the presence of FDP in the ascitic fluid in large amounts, so it not seems to be an ovarian cancer specific marker, but an aspecific marker of malignancy.
Echocardiographyc has been used to study clinical signs of cardiopathy in 25 chronic alcoholics. Compared to normal control subjects, the alcoholics presented an increase in the left ventricular wall and an increase in the cross section and volume of the left myocardium. The left ventricular cavity was also increased. On the other hand, echocardiographic indices of myocardial contractility, represented by the ejection fraction, rate of circumferential shortening and rate of increase of the thickness of the left ventricular wall from telediastole to telesystole, were within normal limits.

By testing with echocardiographic techniques on healthy hearted human subjects, it is shown that the myocardium elastic modulus, defined as the ratio between the equatorial stress in the left ventricular wall and the strain of the left ventricular cavity, results to be independent from the age of subjects at rest. In healthy subjects the treatment with vasoxine, a vessel-constrictor drug, causes an increase in the elastic modulus, the treatment with isoproterenol, an inotropic agent, makes the elastic modulus decrease, whereas the treatment with peritrate, a nitroderivative, does not modify this modulus. In conclusion this parameter, though it cannot be considered a cardiac contractility index, yet it may be utilized to characterize the left ventricular functional state. The alterations caused by the use of vasoxine and isoproterenol in cardiac frequency, left ventricular geometry and arterial pressure, in the examined subjects, are comparable with the alterations reported in the recent literature.
Thirty-three subjects, fourteen of which with normal heart, ten with aortic insufficiency and nine with myocardiopathy, were studied by echocardiography and sfigmomanometric arterial pressure measurements. The ejection fraction EF, the left ventricular equatorial wall stress sigma, the corresponding left ventricular strain epsilon and the ratio E = sigma/epsilon have been determined for all subjects. The mean values of these quantities, at the onset of ventricular systole, for normal hearts are: EF = 0.67 +/- 0.05; sigma = (2.67 +/- 0.41) . 10(5) dine/cm2; E = (0.99 +/- 0.15) . 10(6) dine/cm2; for patients with aortic insufficiency: EF = 0.51 +/- 0.09; sigma = (2.74 +/- 1.10) . 10(5) dine/cm2; E = (1.51 +/- 0.69) . 10(6) dine/cm2; for patients with miocardiopathy: EF = 0.41 +/- 0.06; sigma = (4.36 +/- 2.08) . 10(5) dine/cm2; E = (3.20 +/- 1.19) . 10(6) dine/cm2. After a discussion on the significance of sigma and E parameters, it is inferred that E may be a useful measure of ventricular function. This parameter is different for distinct cardiac diseases and, within the limits of the same disease, probably will change according to seriousness.
Echocardiographic measurements were performed on fifteen football players, in moderate training and on untrained control groups. In comparison with the untrained subjects the echocardiographic tests displayed in athletes a 34% increase in the stroke volume, a 23% increase in the left cavity in diastole, a 11% increase in thickness of left wall in diastole, an increase of the area of the heart's transverse section and of the left miocardial volume. The contractility and pump indexes were the same for both groups of subjects. In conclusion, football is a compound type sport, implying mainly isotonic muscle contractions and isometric too; miocardial hypertrophy in football players' heart has a physiological character.
Echocardiographic studies were performed both before and after commissurotomy on fifteen subjects affected by non-calcified mitral stenosis. The amplitude CE of the anterior leaflet dis placement, the slope of the CD and EF intervals, the amplitude of the A-wave, the ratio FA/DE and the reciprocal position of the anterior and posterior leaflet echoes were measured on the echographic records. These data were compared with the values obtained in ten normal subjects. After commissurotomy, the slope of the CD interval and most evidently that of the EF interval increased (the last one by a factor of 3), and the area of the mitral opening was found to be more than 9% larger. The A-wave reappeared clearly in 30% of the operated patients, and the outline of the posterior leaflet was no longer inscribed in the anterior leaflet diastolic curve in all cases; the amplitude CE was unchanged.
A semi-automatic system is described for analysis of echocardiographic traces of the left ventricle. Filtering interpolating and averaging processes are discussed and the overall accuracy evaluated. The program is able to calculate ventricular indexes (strake volume, ejection fraction, circumferential velocity of fiber shortening), continuous functions (istantaneous ventricular diameter and volume, wall thickness, velocity of cavity compression and dilation) and, correlating the echo data with pressure values, circumferential stresss and ventricular compliance. Pressure is obtained along the ejection phase only from the carotidal pulse calibrated by means of the brachial pressure values. Advantages and limits of the method are discussed.
The left ventricular performance in patients with mitral stenosis has been assessed by echocardiography, through the measurement of various parameters, such as the stroke volume, the ejection fraction (EF), the mean circumferential fiber shortening rate (VCF), the cardiac work and the left ventricular mass. Among these parameters only EF and VCF are statistically lowered in mitral disease, in comparison with their value for normal hearts: the mean value of EF is 0.62 in healthy people and 0.49 in mitralic patients; the mean value of the VCF rate is 1.05 circ/s and 0.78 circ/s respectively. The cardiac work and power in the considered patients are on the average lower than normal values by about 10%, but not significantly so. A good correlation has been obtained between the left ventricular work and mass, whereas no correlation has been found between the ventricular wall thickness and the diameter of the left cavity, both measured at end-diastole. The quotient of the ventricular thickness and intracavity radius, in diastole, is equal to 0.38 in healthy people and 0.30 in mitralic patients. Lastly, the echocardiographic results and those of angiocardiographic literature were in agreement.
The authors report on some measurements of cardiac sarcomere length and rate of contraction with ecocardiographic techniques carried out in man. The mean cardiac fibers' velocity of shortening, also measured ecographically, is connected with sarcomere contraction velocity.
