BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis was coined in 1980 to describe pathological and clinical features of non-alcoholic disease associated with pathological features, commonly seen in alcoholic-liver disease itself. It is now a well-recognised cause of end-stage liver disease and a rare cause of orthotopic liver transplantation. A small number of cases with recurrent non-alcoholic steatohepatitis following liver transplantation have been reported, however de novo non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in the liver allograft is not well recognised. AIMS/RESULTS: We report four cases of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis following orthotopic liver transplantation describing the factors related with the pathology. The recurrence of fatty infiltration occurred within 21 months and transition from mild steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and early fibrosis was observed within 60 months post transplant in all four patients. All four cases had association with one or multiples risk factors (obesity, type 2 diabetes and/or hyperlipidemia). CONCLUSIONS: Management of this risk factors may play a therapeutic role in the prevention of recurrent and de novo non-alcoholic steatohepatitis following orthotopic liver transplantation.
Using part of a set of ethnographic data gathered over a 5-year period on the political economy of cocaine in Peru, the study examines the impact of coca and cocaine on the social and economic policies of Peru. Before assessing the Peruvian government's role in international drug policy, the article briefly surveys the traditional use of coca and production, trafficking, and abuse of cocaine within the context of a much larger national problem. The paper concludes with a critical evaluation of the limited investment in crop substitution and eradication programs supported by the American government.

A case of massive ascariasis in a three and a half years old girl who eliminated 104 worms after treatment with mebendazole is reported from a riverside sector of Riñihue Lake, Chile. Chilean literature about intestinal massive ascariasis is reviewed. Worms showed 12-29 cm of length and 0.2-5.5 g of weight. Total worms weighted 155.8 g.
Determination of the nickel content in 49 commercial solutions used in parenteral nutrition, by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy in a graphite kiln. Important differences were found between the different components (less than 5 to 23.000 ppb). The largest concentrations of Ni were found in sodium chloride, phosphate salts, 10% calcium chloride and 2M potassium chloride, whereas the aminoacid, glucose and lipid solutions contained the smallest concentrations. The amount of Nickel in the preparations varied depending on the supplier and different salts of the compound itself. The Nickel intake in 2 TPN solutions with high and low concentrations of Ni (827 and 270 micrograms respectively) was also analyzed, and this intake was higher than the estimated amount absorbed in the diet. In the case of the TPN with a high Nickel content, this was higher than the level detected as being the cause of sensitivity reactions in patients sensitive to Nickel.
