This contribution discusses a sociological investigation- till now the most extensive one of this kind in the Fed. Rep. of Germany- conducted by the author, with the aim of collecting information about the social deprivation of the blind by means of a survey of this group of disabled in the Fed. Rep. of Germany. In this respect three spheres were taken into consideration: (1) Different aspects of the social relations among the blind: statements regarding frequency, intensity and mode of contacts have shown that the blind often have contact among themselves, though they mainly have contacts to the non-disabled, primarily as a consequence of their being involved in a seeing environment. (2) Different aspects of the social relations between the blind and the seeing: statements to the different characteristics of deprivation make evident that the blind, with regard to the sociological aspect, have an outsider position. The discussion, among other things on the topics "possibilities of communication and interpretation" as well as "mobility" and "social acknowledgement", has shown that the blind persons violate certain rules prevelant among the seeing namely the usual standards of communication and interaction. (3) Further aspects for the interpretation of the social situation of the blind: statements to blindness and other kinds of disabilities make obvious the revaluation of the blind's outsider situation by comparing blindness with other kinds of disabilities. The social deprivation of the blind thus assumes a relative character. Finally, the results of the investigation are theoretically classified by means of a behavioristically influenced role analysis.
This study compares 72 patients screened for significant emotional problems and treated only by internists of a general medical clinic with 62 patients also treated by internists but completing in addition 10 weekly psychotherapeutic visits. Forty-one patients did not keep their initial appointments and 69 patients dropped out of treatment but are not considered in this report. These patients, from inner-city Baltimore, were socially and economically a highly disadvantaged group. At intake, the 62 patients who completed psychotherapy and the 72 patients treated only by internists were equal demographically and in diagnosed physical illnesses. The two groups were approximately equal in the extent of emotional disturbance. All patients were followed up at 4 months and 1 year after intake. Methods of evaluation included a 7-point self-report of global improvement, the 58-item Hopkins Symptom Checklist, the primary target complaint, scaled clinical estimates of psychosocial adjustment, and scaled data from systematic review of medical charts. Significantly more patients undergoing the psychotherapy remained improved at 1-year follow-up, independent of age, sex, degree of disability, diagnosed medical illnesses, level of emotional disturbance, and employment status. While there was evidence of a common denominator to therapeutic results in both groups, the data strongly suggests specific effects of psychotherapy.
A state hospital began a program in 1975 to integrate the treatment services of the hospital with those of six community mental health centers. The interlocking treatment system that resulted made use of mini-teams of hospital and center staff to recommend referrals to the hospital, develop inpatient treatment programs, and supervise the client's return to the community. The linkages between the hospital and the centers helped ensure continuity of care for clients and to ease their return to community living. A study of hospital wards participating in the system and those not participating showed that participating wards discharged significantly more clients over an 18-month period.
An isopter of visual field charted using the Goldmann perimeter represents a conical area of visual space whose apex is at the eye of the subject and whose base intersects the hemispherical surface of the perimeter bowl. Conventional isopter plotting conceals cartographic distortion and leads to serious underestimates of visual field area when measured by planimetry. Mathematical methods are presented which allow estimation of the true visual field area represented by different isopters on the surface of the Goldmann hemispheric perimeter. A correction can be applied to planimetric measurements to reduce the error inherent in the transposition of the curved surface of the perimeter onto flat, polar azimuthal visual field charts. This study may form the basis for quantitative evaluation of pathological changes in the area of the visual field.

Pregnant rats were exposed to either 0, 1.0, or 1.5 ppm ozone during either mid gestation (Days 9-12) or late gestation (Days 17-20). The dams were allowed to deliver and the early morphological and behavioral development of their pups was monitored. Both exposure regimens transiently reduced neonatal growth rates. The late gestation exposure regimen produced retardations in early reflex development and in open field behavior. Finally, several males from this exposure regimen remained permanently stunted in growth.
An increasing number of children with acute leukemia show cerebral complications. 10 out of 78 children treated in our hospital for acute lymphoblastic leukemia or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who underwent remission induction therapy or were in continuous complete remission developed central nervous system complications. During intensive initial therapy, intracerebral hemorrhages (2) and metabolic disturbances with concomitant cerebral convulsions (3) were seen. Unusual central-nervous infections occured in each treatment period (3). Cerebral degenerations could be observed only during the maintenance therapy (2). Cerebral convulsions were the leading symptom in 7 children. With intensive control of the coagulation system and the metabolic parameters central nervous system complications in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia should be reduced significantly.
A 56-year-old patient with histopathologically established myotonic dystrophy is described. Gross pathological examination of the eyes revealed cataracts and peripheral retinal dystrophy as described previously. Lacy vacuolization of the pigment epithelium of the iris and vacuolization of the nonpigmentary ciliary epithelium were also found. These latter findings have, to our knowledge, not been hereto described in the literature.
