[Toxic effects on the kidney by endovesical instillations of formol. Hematogenic diffusion or reflux (author's transl)].

Intravesical formalin instillation has its drawbacks and complications, the most serious one being the anuria either by oedematous obstruction or by tubular necrosis. Hematogenous absorption of formaldehyde was suspected but never proven. A case of tubular necrosis by hematogenous absorption is circumstantially proven following intravesical treatment in a 70 years old patient with recurrency of vesical tumour and profuse bleeding.

Urogenital tuberculosis in Israel.

Forty-four patients were treated for urogenital tuberculosis in our ward from 1956 to 1975. Four patients were Israeli born and all the others were immigrants, mostly from Eastern Europe. Immigration greatly influences local morbidity, and tuberculosis is no exception. The highly developed preventive and social medicine of Israel has excellent results, and prognosis is more than favorable. Only one death was registered in our material, and this was due to renal failure of long duration.

Perinephric abscess: report of 19 cases.

Nineteen patients with perinephric abscess were treated during a period of ten years. Eighteen abscesses were cured by drainage performed as soon as the diagnosis had been made. One patient died because the correct diagnosis had not been reached, the correct one being revealed by autopsy. Staphylococcus and gram negative bacilli were equally isolated. Stones were present in thirteen patients. Forty-two per cent of the patients were diabetic. The literature is reviewed.

Tubular necrosis complicating intravesical formaldehyde treatment.

Intravesical formaldehyde instillation for the treatment of profuse hemorrhage due to inoperable bladder carcinoma has been done for the last three years. Results have been satisfactory. Recently, an anuria developed after such treatment in a 76-year-old patient. Renal biopsy showed focal tubular necrosis. The possibilities of a toxic or an ischemic lesion are discussed. Diuresis reappeared spontaneously after six days and the patient was discharged from the hospital twelve days after the formaldehyde treatment.
