Effect of estrogens on DMBA induced breast tumors.

Evidence is presented for the anti-carcinogenic activity of estriol when this hormone is administered to 50-55 day old SD rats prior to treatment with DMBA. In control and estradiol treated animals, 85-100% of animals developed breast tumors regardless of dose of steroid. Low doses of estriol (1 microgram/day) offered some protection against tumorigenesis but at levels exceeding 10 micrograms/day only 20-35% of animals developed tumors even when observed for 180 days following DMBA ingestion. Furthermore, the mean time for tumor production is greatly increased in the presence of E3. Short term (2 weeks) administration offered no protection against tumor formation, suggesting that the effect of estriol probably relates to the promotion stage of tumorigenesis.

Interaction between rat peritoneal macrophages and sialidase-treated erythrocytes: biochemical and morphological studies.

Rat peritoneal macrophages bind and phagocytose homologous, sialidase-treated erythrocytes at a rate depending on the number of red cells and the amount of sialic acids released. Vibrio cholerae sialidase only partially (75%) removes the sialic acid residues from rat erythrocytes, whereas with Arthrobacter ureafaciens sialidase complete desialylation is possible. Analysis of the sialic acids by capillary gas-liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (GLC-MS) revealed the occurrence of N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), N-acetyl-9-O-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5,9Ac2), N-acetyl-7,9-di-O-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5,7,9Ac3), N-acetyl-9-O-lactylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac9Lt) and N-glycolyneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc). Native rat serum enhances binding and phagocytosis, as has been observed by radioactive measurements and studies in a micro-scale by light and electron microscopy. The morphological experiments showed that maximum binding of sialidase-treated erythrocytes to macrophages occurs after 15-30 min, while for maximum phagocytosis at least 60 min are necessary. Striking alterations of the shape of erythrocytes during their interaction with macrophages were observed.

[Catamnestic surveys on somato-psychosocial development in childhood and adolescence of patients with unipolar depressive and bipolar manic-depressive psychoses].

The somatic and psychosocial development of 80 subjects with manifest affective-phasic psychoses is studied retrospectively and compared with that of an identically sized control group consisting of neuropsychiatrically healthy subjects. Statistically significant differences were found particularly in the answers to questions dealing with social situation and social adaptability. Achievement at school and vocational qualifications were lower among the parents of the patients than among those of the healthy subjects. Characteristic features of the patients' childhood and adolescence were transient depression, often for no apparent cause, and maladaption, and vocational wishes were fulfilled less often than among the controls. The patients experienced greater difficulty in settling in to a new group due to their contact difficulties.

Metabolic pathways in chick amnion muscle. A cytochemical study.

By means of histochemical techniques different reactions were studied in the amnion musculature of the chick during their most active period of contractions between the 5th and the 9th days of incubation. The muscle cells showed strong activity for cholinesterase and glutamate dehydrogenase and low activity for monoaminoxidase. The glycogen, phosphorylase and UDPG-glycogen glycosyltransferase were negative. Whereas, lipids and enzymes involved in fat metabolism were positive. The supposed energy source of the amnion musculature is discussed.

Binding and phagocytosis of sialidase-treated rat erythrocytes by a mechanism independent of opsonins.

Rat peritoneal macrophages bind and phagocytoze homologous sialidase-treated erythrocytes at a rate which is dependent on the amount of sialic acid that has been removed from the cells. Increased binding of erythrocytes is observed after the removal of 10-20% of membrane sialic acid, while for phagocytosis at least 30-40% of this substance must be removed. With Vibrio cholerae sialidase only a partial (80%) hydrolysis of rat erythrocyte sialic acid is possible, whereas Arthrobacter ureafaciens sialidase leads to complete desialylation and therefore causes stronger binding and phagocytosis of the erythrocytes than the V. cholerae enzyme. Preincubation of peritoneal macrophages with sialidase impairs binding and phagocytosis. Experiments were performed to account for the stimulation of binding and phagocytosis observed in the presence of native, homologous serum. However, an involvement of immunoglobulins and complement factors of the classical and alternative pathway in the engulfment process has been excluded. Fibronectin, tuftsin and substance P have no influence, either. On the other hand, peanut agglutinin and Erythrina crystagalli agglutinin are potent stimulators of binding and phagocytosis of sialidase-treated erythrocytes, whereas soybean agglutinin has only little and limulin no influence at all. It is concluded that sialidase-treated erythrocytes, having been bound to the beta-galactose-specific lectin on the macrophage surface, are phagocytozed as a function of their number and binding strength to the macrophages. The influence of native serum and especially of the plant lectins on this process is discussed.

[Cerebrovascular diseases in advanced and very old age. Significance and correlation of computer tomography studies of the skull and EEG].

118 patients between 50 and 90 years of age with an acute cerebrovascular disease were examined. While cranial computerized tomography was helpful in the differential diagnosis of ischemia or hemorrhage it was less helpful in the diagnosis of other cerebrovascular diseases (abnormalities, stenoses). Frequent EEG-analysis permitted in the cases of cerebral ischemia or hemorrhage prognostic conclusions as well as computerized tomography did. Atypical clinical syndromes could be better diagnosed by computerized tomography than by EEG.

[The mobile-cecum--a contribution to the independence of this disease and to its surgical treatment].

A mobile caecum can certainly exist perpetually without symptoms. The operation is indicated after a barium enema and upper gastro-intestinal x-ray examination if the symptoms-especially colicky abdominal pain-have been lasting for a long period. Caecum and ascending colon are fixed at the lateral abdominal wall as a "coecocolofixatio lateralis" (Klose 1909). 93.7% of our 35 patients had no postoperative complaints. The operation is not indicated as prophylaxis for volvulus or invagination.
