If a protein takes part in the Maillard reaction as the amino component, other functional groups in the protein molecule are also expected to react in addition under appropriate conditions. The beta-lactoglobulin-lactose system, first used by Freimuth and Trübsbach, served to demonstrate that the properties of the products from the Maillard reaction are affected by thiol and disulphide groups in a low-water medium at high temperature. The amount, solubility, swelling capacity and composition are modified in dependence of the presence or absence of these reactive groups.

In spite of remarkable therapeutic results obtained by gestagens with antiandrogenic activity, usually combined with estrogen, in oily seborrhea, acne, Fox-Fordyce disease, androgenetic alopecia and hirsutism many dermatologist still hesitate to treat the named disorders by hormones. The reason for their hesitation appears to be the erroneous belief, that the named disturbances represent hormonal disorders the treatment of which does not belong to dermatology. After a survey on the mechanism of action of antiandrogens the basic difference between androgen dependent skin disorders and endocrinopathies with manifestation on the skin and its appendages is explained. Androgen dependent skin disorders, like oily seborrhea and most cases of acne are not the result of endocrine disturbances in the sense of an pathologically increased or decreased production of sexual hormons. Administering sexual hormons the physician takes advantage of the sebosuppressive effect of female sexual hormons as he does of the antiallergic activity of the hormon cortisol (and related compounds) in the treatment of eczemas. The antiandrogenic treatment of androgenetic alopecia, hirsutism and androgenetic acne--with their underlying hormonal disturbance, consisting in an increased production of androgens, represents an quasi etiological therapy. As in these cases the hormonal disturbances finds its expression mainly or exclusively in disorders of the skin or hair growth, the dermatologist, preferentially in cooperation with endocrinogists and/or gynacologists remains entitled to take over the treatment. The available drugs are discussed and suggestions are made for their appropriate use.

In a cytogenetic study of the consecutive cell cycles (M1, M2 etc.) from human lymphocyte cultures after 5-bromodeoxyuridine incorporation followed by differential Giemsa staining, the metaphases of M2 and subsequent in vitro divisions have been found to spread better than those of M1 cells, as if the cells of in vitro generation suffer some membrane alterations. Moreover presence of S or G2 phase, leukocytes in a blood sample may result into early proliferation in a PHA stimulated culture system, so that the metaphase yield at 72 h will be larger than otherwise, a sizeable portion of which, being in M2 or subsequent cell cycles, will spread better. Thus such individual or transient intrinsic factors of haematologic state may influence the success of a leukocyte culture and the quality of chromosome preparation.
Androgenetic alopecia in the female occurs much more frequently than is generally believed. The condition is still considered infrequent, for it differs, in its clinical picture and in the sequence of events leading to it, from common baldness in men. To facilitate an early diagnosis (desirable in view of the therapeutic possibilities by means of antiandrogens) a classification of the stages of the common form (female type) of androgenetic alopecia in women is presented. The exceptionally observed male type of androgenetic alopecia can be classified according to Hamilton or to the modification of this classification proposed by Ebling & Rook.
Positive patch test reactions to isopropyl alcohol in connection with proved allergy to ethyl alcohol have already been published. A case of allergy to isopropyl alcohol with positive reactions to isopropanol (unpurified test material) and negative reactions to ethanol and methanol has also been reported. We report a case of a occupationally acquired sensitivity to isopropyl alcohol in which, on testing with gas chromatographically purified material, positive patch test reactions were found to 1-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-propanol, 2-butanol and methanal (formaldehyde) but not to the primary alcohols methanol, ethanol and amyl alcohol; not to the aldehydes acetal (acetaldehyde) and butanal; nor to the ketones acetone, butanon and isobutyl ketone, nor to methanoic (formic)acid. A tentative explanation for this peculiar pattern of reactions is given.
Urinary excretion of ampicillin, amoxicillin and oxacillin was studied in five healthy volunteers. Determinations were carried out by chemical methods (PC, TLC, spectrophotometry). Beside the parent compounds and their penicilloic acids, an alphaamino-substituted derivative was demonstrated. The total recovery of amoxicillin was nearly complete, recovery of ampicillin and oxacillin was about 50%. The combination of aminopenicillins with oxacillin did not alter significantly the excretion of the individual compounds.
Some uncommon forms of dystrophic hair roots, stimulating club hairs, "dysplastic anagen hairs" or catagen hairs, are demonstrated.

Contrary to the almost water insoluble crystalline beta-escinic acid, the water soluble forms of escin -- such as alpha-escinic acid or its salts, Na-b-escinate and the amorphous beta-escinic acid -- are so well absorbed by the gastro-intestinal tract that the effects after oral application could be compared with those of the reference substances furosemide, hydrocortisone, acetylsalicylic acid, azapropazone and phenylbutazone. Escin was tested in the stasis edema, cotton-pellet-granuloma, and UV-erythema, i.e., in test models which seem specially suited to characterize the properties of this substance. In these tests which reflect both the prophylactic and the therapeutic treatment escin has proven antiexudative-antiphlogistic effects. They are based on a favorable influence of permeability and diuresis.
Authors have developed new chemical methods for studying the human metabolism of nalidixic acid. The methods are suited for the quantitative determination of nalidixic acid, hydroxynalidixic acid, nalidixic acid glucuronide, hydroxynalidixic acid-glucuronide, and of free and total glucuronic acid excretion. The total urinary excretion of NA and its metabolites was found to be 50 to 100% of the ingested dose. The percentual distribution of the individual metabolites was as follows: NA 0,5-5, HNA2,5-6, NAG24-80, and HNAG11-26%. It was unanimously proved by enzymatic decomposition and specific chemical reactions that the excreted conjugates were monoglucuronides. The significance of individual differences, bilirubin metabolism, urinary pH and the pharmacokinetical behaviour of the individual metabolites is discussed from the therapeutic view.
