Coeliac plexus block versus pancreaticogastrostomy for pain in chronic pancreatitis. A controlled randomized trial.

Seventeen patients with chronic pancreatitis and dilated pancreatic ducts were randomly allocated to coeliac plexus block or pancreaticogastrostomy. The number of patients with pain relief after coeliac plexus block and pancreaticogastrostomy did not differ at discharge. Pain score and use of analgesics before coeliac plexus block and 6 months later were unaffected but were significantly less after pancreaticogastrostomy. Operation decreased pancreatic tissue pressure significantly. This pressure decrease is believed to explain pain relief.

Automated, fully computerized analysis of the clinical electroretinogram.

Being a relatively simply composed bioelectric signal, the ERG lends itself very well to computer analysis. This paper presents the results obtained by the employment of an automated, fully computerized ERG analysis system. It is concluded that programmable computing facilities have the effect of rendering diagnostic ERG evaluation more accurate and reliable as well as saving a lot of human effort.

Administration of a retinoid as prophylaxis of recurrent non-invasive bladder tumors.

A controlled study has been conducted to ascertain whether administration for 8 months of a vitamin A-acid analog, Tigason, could prevent recurrences of non-invasive bladder tumors. Eligible were 73 patients, 33 in the Tigason group, and 40 in the placebo group. The results indicate that Tigason, as used in this study, is ineffective as prophylaxis. Side effects to Tigason urged 17 patients to drop out from the study mostly due to symptoms from skin and mucous membranes. The discussion considers different reasons for the lack of effect and concludes that more tolerable vitamin A-acid analogs are needed if further studies of prevention of non-invasive bladder tumors are to be carried out.

Genetic relationships of short and long anaerobic curved rods isolated from the vagina.

DNA from anaerobic curved rods (CR) isolated from the human vagina were analysed regarding sequence homology and guanine + cytosine content. Of the strains of CR tested, ten belonged to the short (SCR) (approximately 1 micron) and eight to the long (LCR) (approximately 2-4 micron) CR type. A low level of homology (5-10%) was found between SCR and LCR. The LCR were a fairly homogeneous group of bacteria, with homologies ranging from 70 to 100%. The SCR fell into three DNA homology groups: one with 85%, and another with approximately 60% homology, while two strains belonging to the latter group hybridized with only 33%.

Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis: a case report.

With the present case report we call attention to the clinical entity of multicentric reticulohistiocytosis (MR). Referring to earlier case reports on this rare condition we present the history, clinical and histopathological findings. We stress the importance of revealing possible underlying internal diseases, including malignancies, and also the importance of histological examination of synovium when synovectomies are carried out in patients with arthritis of unknown cause, as arthritis commonly precedes the mucocutaneous lesions by years.
