Pilomatrix carcinoma with pulmonary metastasis. Report of a case.

A 67-year-old white man developed a locally recurrent pilomatrix carcinoma of the back. Within a 4-year period bilateral pulmonary metastases developed. This to the knowledge of the authors is the first reported case of a metastasizing pilomatrix carcinoma in the medical literature.

Papillomavirus common antigens. Papillomavirus antigen in verruca, benign papillomatous lesions, trichilemmoma, and bowenoid papulosis: an immunoperoxidase study.

We surveyed a variety of papillomatous lesions, trichilemmoma, and bowenoid papulosis for the presence of papillomavirus common antigen using an unlabeled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique and an antibody against papillomavirus common antigen. Papillomavirus common antigen was detected in four of six verruca vulgaris lesions overlying the nuclei of koilocytotic cells. The antigen was observed much less often in the granular zone of verrucous lesions that did not contain koilocytotic cells. Thirteen of 18 lesions of bowenoid papulosis had positive immunostaining overlying occasional nuclei in the granular zone but the antigen was not detected in the granular zone of squamous cell carcinoma in situ or of trichilemmoma. These data support the hypothesis that some lesions of bowenoid papulosis represent a form of cutaneous infection by papillomavirus.

Family characteristics in high and low health care utilization.

Despite the position of the family as the basic social unit, the majority of studies of medical care utilization focus on individuals. In this preliminary study, nine families of high utilizers and 12 families of low utilizers were compared using the Moos Family Environment Scale and a semistructured interview. Significant differences were seen in structure, interactional patterns, and health-related behavior. The high utilizer families, as a whole, saw themselves as less expressive and more achievement-oriented. High utilizer children saw much more parental control than did low utilizer children. There was greater divergence in perspective between husbands and wives of high utilizing families than between spouses in low utilizing families. High utilizer families were less social than low utilizer families. There was greater use of tranquilizers and greater dissatisfaction with doctors in the high utilizer families as well.

Echolocation by young bats on their initial and subsequent flights.

This study documents developmental changes in the vocal reaction of bats to obstacles and describes the pulse patterns of young bats on their 1st and subsequent flights. The pulse repetition rate of young bats showed an increase just before the bats approached obstacles. This pattern differs from that of older bats. The distance at which the change in pulse repetition rate occurs is roughly twice as far from the obstacle in adults as it is in young bats. Even on their 1st flights young bats (25-29 days old) seemed to perform better than chance. This capability seems to be resistant to environmental manipulation during the preweaning period.

Xenon arc and argon laser photocoagulation in the treatment of diabetic disc neovascularization. Part 1. Effect on disc vessels, visual fields, and visual acuity.

Xenon arc and argon laser photocoagulation are equally effective in producing regression of disc neovascularization and maintaining visual acuity. Xenon has more destructive effects on the visual field and electroretinogram, but is more comfortable because retrobulbar anaesthesia is used and more convenient to the patient because fewer treatment sessions are needed.

The effects of family presence and brief family intervention on global outcome for hospitalized schizophrenic patients.

Virtually all modern inpatient psychiatric units operate on the assumptions that family presence, when the identified patient has schizophrenia, does affect outcome and that adding brief family intervention to the treatment prescription will enhance hospital and posthospital outcome. Often the family intervention is believed not adequate in terms of duration or frequency or quality (since trainees are the family therapists), given the standards of some experienced family clinicians. This report addresses these issues by comparing outcome measures for hospitalized patients with schizophrenia by (a) presence of a family and (b) amount and/or kind of family intervention. Most importantly, we wished to learn if global outcome would show change by virtue of family therapy (within the constraints imposed by the above limitations of family intervention).

Experimental studies of the ontogeny of ultrasonic vocalizations in bats.

The ontogeny of FM pulses emitted by bats is a process of maturation that is not easily altered by experimental manipulation during early development. Infants that were hand-raised and infants that were raised by mothers with altered voices (the superior laryngeal nerves were cauterized pre- and postpartum) emitted normal adult calls. Effects of pinching the superior laryngeal nerves of young bats with a cold forcepts on their vocalizations suggest that the development of this nerve and its associated musculature occurs early in the bat's postnatal life.

Interaction in hospitalized patient-led and staff-led psychotherapy groups.

Psychotic patients' participation in two kinds of inpatient group therapy, one staff-led, and the other patient-led with staff observing, revealed that patients talked more in the patient-led group than in the traditional staff-led group. Discussion explored the importance of peer, self-help influences in groups for stimulating psychotic patients to take more responsibility for themselves and other patients.
