Indomethacin and gentamycin treatment in experimental kidney infection.

Experiences in experimental renal infection of rats treated with gentamycin, indomethacin, and by the combination of both drugs are reported. Urine osmolality of animals treated with combined therapy normalized after the first dose of indomethacin; their antibody titers against the pathogenic bacteria, as compared to the controls, decreased significantly. When drugs were administered separately the above immunologic changes could not be observed. Indomethacin did not inhibit the antibacterial effect of gentamycin and, administered alone, it increased the renal concentration ability.

Distribution of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase-like immunoreactive fibers in the rat cerebellar cortex during ontogeny.

Postnatal ontogeny of dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH)-like immunoreactive fibers in the rat cerebellar cortex has been studied by immunofluorescence on sagittal sections of the vermis. Except in the case of unusual thick highly fluorescent fibers noticed in the external granular layer during the first 2 weeks after birth, the arrival of DBH-containing fibers through the cerebellar cortex follows an inside-out gradient: at birth sparse fluorescent axons are observed in the album of the cerebellum. They invade the internal granular layer at postnatal day 2 (P2) and reach the Purkinje cell layer at P5. From P5 to P15, the density of fibers increases in this layer, which becomes the most innervated layer of the cerebellar cortex, as in the adult. When the external grains migrate, DBH-containing fibers extend progressively from depth to surface in the molecular layer and show an adult pattern at P30. The relationship between our results and other morphological and biochemical studies is discussed.

Developmental changes of synapses in the cerebellar cortex of the rat. A quantitative analysis.

Synaptogenesis in the molecular layer of the vermis cortex in Wistar rats between 1 and 25 days after birth was investigated. After staining with OSO4, the following parameters were measured: the density of synaptic profiles; the percentage of the neuropil area occupied by synapses; the mean diameter of the boutons; and the numerical density of synapses in a defined volume. The detailed topographical analysis enabled us to show the following: the first synapses appear diffusely in the molecular layer; after the 10th day a synaptic gradient is present between the depth and the surface area (this gradient can be found by the count of the synapses and by studying the spatial distribution of the synaptic area); this gradient is no longer seen at the 25th day, when the density of synapses is relatively uniform throughout the whole molecular layer.

[About the incidence of chronic airway diseases in infants and children (author's transl)].

Based on the experiences with 1,500 infants and children, hospitalized during a five-year period, who had undergone clinical, routine laboratory, immunological bacteriological, allergological, X-ray, oto-rhino-laryngological, spirometrical and bronchological examinations performed by unchanging teams using the same methods and instruments, it was found that the cause of respiratory diseases in a comparatively high number of patients were developmental anomalies, that it is important to look for tracheal stenoses, that there is chronic bronchitis in infants and children, that sinusitis maxillaris or shortage of immunoglobulins are relatively rare, and that selective bacteriological cultures are not very often positive. These results emphasize the importance of carefully differentiating between the various forms of respiratory diseases in infants and children.

Forms and results of mitolactol therapy.

The authors give a summarizing report about mitolactol treatments performed in Hungary. As a single-agent therapy the drug was administered in two forms: (1) every-day therapy, 5 mg/kg/day, (2) push therapy, 10 mg/kg every 5th day or 15 mg/kg every 7th day, in a total dose of 100 mg/kg in both administration forms. Out of the solid tumours the squamous cell cancers proved to be the most responsive to mitolactol therapy: first of all in tumours of the head and neck and of the lung. The study also reports the preliminary results of polychemotherapeutical protocols containing mitolactol now in progress: (1) bleomycin + mitolactol (Bristol protocol), (2) carminomycin + mitolactol and (3) adriamycin + mitolactol.

Projections of the common fur of the muzzle upon the cortical area for mystacial vibrissae in rats dewhiskered since birth.

In normal adult rats, the mystacial vibrissae and the common fur of the snout project at different loci on the SI cortex. The surface area of the normal fur projection is 0.8 mm2, whereas the vibrissa field amounts to 3-4 mm2. In rats dewhiskered since birth, the vibrissa area can still be identified through the projections from ipsilateral vibrissae (undamaged side). It is shown that in the absence of the vibrissae since birth, the vibrissa area, and this alone, is invaded by projections from the contralateral fur (damaged side).

[Ascending aortic aneurysm with mucoid infiltration of the media and aortic leaflets. Pathogenic hypotheses- surgical consequences].

The theoretical and practical problems posed by aneurysms of the ascending aorta with mucoid infiltration of the Media and the aortic leaflets are discussed with reference to two suggestive cases. These histological changes are not specific for Marfan's syndrome, the relation with which is very inconstant. Incomplete replacement of the affected tissues risks a recurrence which is especially serious when the sinus of Valsalva is involved. Therefore, total replacement of the ascending aorta with aortic valve replacement and reimplantation of the coronary arteries is generally indicated. Histology of the excised tissues should be performed routinely with specific stains for mucopolysaccharides. Close follow-up of operated patients with this condition is recommended, especially those with only partial replacements.

Anterior horn cell disease associated with pontocerebellar hypoplasia in infants.

Three sibs presented with an identical clinical picture of severe mental retardation, cortical blindness, and extensive peripheral paralysis of lower motor neurone type, and died before one year of age. In the one necropsied case, spinal cord lesions, indistinguishable form those of Werding-Hoffman disease, were associated with extreme hypoplasia and atrophy of the cerebellum, and with atrophy of the ventral part of the pons. No prominent abnormalities were found in the nerves sampled despite gross reduction of motor and sensory conduction velocities in two infants. It is proposed that this familial disorder is distinct from Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, and represents a further subtype in the heterogeneous group of the infantile muscular atrophies.
