Galactosylation with beta-galactosidase from bovine testes employing modified acceptor substrates.

In this study beta1-3 linked analogues of the T-antigen determinant were synthesized in preparative scale by transgalactosylation using beta-galactosidase from bovine testes to give synthetic antigens. Acceptors with modifications of the sugar residue such as alpha-glycosylated spacers, as well as GlcNAc-alphaOR- and 2dGal-alphaOR-substrates opened further possibilities for galactosylation.

[Pregnancy and colorectal cancer].

Among 1761 patients operated on for colorectal malignancies by the authors in a period of 20 years, four cases were diagnosed during pregnancy. Beside analyzing the case-histories they present the relevant literature data: the incidence of colorectal tumors during pregnancy is 4-5 cases/100,000 pregnancies, and most frequently they are situated in the rectum. The prognosis of primary colorectal malignancies diagnosed during pregnancy is unfavourable, and their biological behavior is more aggressive. Authors review the advised diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in different periods of pregnancy.

C-fos expression in the brainstem after voluntary ingestion of sucrose in the rat.

Neurons showing activity after sweet taste stimulation, were detected with c-fos immunocytochemistry, to identify brainstem nuclei involved in processing taste information. The distribution of the evoked expression of c-fos was visualized in the rat brainstem after voluntary ingestion of sucrose. Sucrose-taste-specific c-fos immunoreactive neurons were found within the medial part of the nucleus of the solitary tract, the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus at caudal levels, the paratrigeminal nucleus and the lateral and medial part of the parabrachial nucleus. These nuclei are known to be involved in the processing of information related to ingestive behavior such as information about taste quality. The present study has shown that c-fos is a useful anatomical marker for activated neurons in the rat brainstem, and that the above-mentioned brainstem areas are involved in the processing of sweet taste information.

[Pulmonary echinococcosis].

Two patients with pulmonal Echinococcosis are presented by the authors. Contact with cestoda carrier animals cannot be revealed. At the first patient, who was without any complaints, the two round shadows in her chest X-ray were detected accidentally by screening examination and before the operation only eosinophilia, many eosinophil granulocytes in the pleural effusion and the positive complement binding reaction were related to the Echinococcosis, which was proved by the histological examination of the intraoperative biopsy. The other patient had complaints during months. In this case the Echinococcus granulosus broke into the bronchus and emptied in the sputum. Postoperative histological diagnosis can be obtained by help of the excision from the intraluminal alteration which was visible during bronchoscopy. The authors summarize the etiology, the clinical signs, the diagnose and the therapy of Echinococcosis. They call attention to the incidence of this mainly tropical disease in Hungary and to the rare soliter pulmonal manifestation of the Echinococcosis.

Re-resection of the short cicatricial stenosis of colorectal anastomoses with EEA stapler.

Following 245 stapled anastomoses reoperation was necessary in 4 cases because of non-tumourous stenoses. In each of the 4 cases re-resection was performed according to authors' method, with EEA stapler, without the mobilisation of the rectum. The method is considered suitable for non-tumourous anastomotic stenoses involving short rectal segments.

Effect of copper sulfate on experimental atherosclerosis.

Serum copper concentration increases significantly (p < 0.01) in rats with experimental atherosclerosis compared to a control group. The serum zinc, the zinc, and copper concentration in abdominal aorta and in liver decreases significantly (p < 0.05) compared to the control group. Administration of copper sulfate for 100 d in these animals induces a significant increase of serum copper (p < 0.01), decrease of serum cholesterol (p < 0.05) and increase of liver copper concentration as compared with the group fed only a high cholesterol diet. In the aorta of these animals the copper concentration increases and edema and lipid infiltration are considerably less than in the group of animals fed only a high lipid diet.

Copper(II) complexes of dipeptides containing aspartyl, glutamyl, and histidyl residues in the side chain.

Copper(II) complexes of various dipeptides containing carboxylate and imidazole-N3 donors (alpha- and gamma-GluVal, alpha- and beta-AspGly, beta-AspHis, gamma-GluHis, and homocarnosine) were studied by potentiometric and spectroscopic methods in solution. It was found that the presence of an alpha-carboxylate group in the N-terminal part of a peptide molecule significantly enhances the metal-binding ability of the ligands as a consequence of stable bis complex formation involving amino acid-like coordination. The interaction of copper(II) with beta-AspHis was characterized by the formation of an imidazole-bridged dimeric species, while the formation of bis complexes was detected in the case of gamma-GluHis. Binding of the imidazole N3 and deprotonated amide nitrogen was presumed in the copper(II)-homocarnosine system.

[Giant lipoma of the ligamentum teres hepatic].

The authors succeeded in removing a lipoma of 20 x 18 x 15 cm in size. It originated from the ligamentum teres hepatis of a 66-year old man. This is the first case described in the Hungarian and second in the world literature. Based on their observations the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the ligamentum teres hepatis are discussed.

[Secondary dilatation of the stump of the cystic duct and stone formation within it].

In the paper the authors analyze the operative material of the surgery department of the Senta Hospital in relation to the secondary expansion of the ductus cysticus stump as a complication following cholecystectomy. In relation to 727 performed cholecystectomies this complication occurred in our material in only 0.39%, which is a much lesser percentage in relation to the facts which are presented in literature. Three cases of secondary ductus cysticus stump expansion (regeneratio cholecystae) are described along with diagnostic procedures and operative protocols. As conclusions, the authors state that with cholecystectomy it is very important that the surgeon observes the basic postulates of the operative technique, i.e., that the stump of ductus cysticus must not exceed the length of 5-6 mm, that i.v. cholangiography must be done in all operations on extrahepatic passageways, and that in all cases of late postoperative biliary colics the "cysticus stump syndrome" must be taken into consideration always.

The role of a peripheral dopamine-antagonist (Motilium) in improving the tolerance to steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents.

Domperidone protective therapy has been applied in 50 patients suffering from locomotor disease, who responded with dyspeptic complaints to the steroidal and non-steroidal antiphlogistic therapies which meant a risk of the activation of an earlier gastro-intestinal disease. The basic therapy could be applied to 80% of patients due to the Motilium protection because of the favourable changes in gastro-intestinal symptoms. Since domperidone is well tolerated by the patients and it does not yield higher risks, it's use is highly recommended as a protective therapy as well.

Developmental changes in the cerebellar cortex after locus ceruleus lesion with 6-hydroxydopamine in the rat.

Three-day-old rats received an infusion of a small dose of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) (12 micrograms) directly into the locus ceruleus nuclei, in order to induce a subtotal lesion of the noradrenergic system. Significant modifications in cerebellum maturation were observed, mainly a regression failure in the perisomatic Purkinje cell processes in the depth of the fissura prima of 10-day-old rats, a reduction in the whole vermis surface area and in the total number of internal granule cells at 15 days of age, the number of external granule cells was slightly enhanced. To discriminate between the effects of the noradrenergic deafferentation and the nonspecific toxic effects of 6-OHDA, these results were compared to those obtained after an infusion of 6-OHDA + bovine serum albumin (BSA) into the locus ceruleus (which produced a selective deafferentation) and after an injection of 6-OHDA directly into the IVth ventricle (which increased the nonspecific toxic effects). Whatever the procedure used, the same reduction in the size of the vermis was observed. However, the fissuration index was not modified when BSA was added to the 6-OHDA solution. We conclude that noradrenergic deafferentation by itself was sufficient to reduce the growth of the cerebellum at certain periods of postnatal life.
