Increase in red cell filterability after incubation with oxpentifylline.

Red cells from patients with various diseases known to decrease red cell filterability were washed and incubated in oxpentifylline suspended in buffered saline. An improvement of red cell filterability could be observed which was independent of the aetiology of red cell rigidity. The improvement was related to the initial degree of abnormality. No change was observed in normal cells or cells more than 4 hours old.

Filterability and vascular disease--II. Red cell filterability after myocardial infarction.

Red cell filterability was measured in 51 patients after proven myocardial infarction. The filterability index (FI) falls to a minimum 7-16 h after the onset of symptoms. This early minimum value is a very good indicator of the patients' subsequent clinical course. The results of three different types of experiments all suggested that the changes in FI were principally due to a change in the plasma secondarily affecting the red cells.

The effects of Arvin and surgery on red cell filterability.

Arovin (ancrod) treatment is generally recognized to lower fibrinogen levels and is sometimes used to decrease plasma and whole blood viscosity. The fall in fibrinogen is accompanied by a rise in fibrinogen degradation products (FDP), but none of the other clotting factors is affected. This study shows that patients undergoing surgery with subsequent Arvin treatment decrease their red cell filterability (RCF), and that this drop cannot be explained by either the surgical intervention, a direct effect of Arvin on the red cells, or the lowered fibrinogen levels. However the decrease of RCF does correlate with the rise in FDP.

Erythrocyte deformability in the pathophysiology of the microcirculation.

The most commonly used technique for assessing the deformability of red cells, i.e. the filtration of the red cells through 5 mu pore filters, is discussed in regard to the criteria which have to be fulfilled in order to accept that an in vitro measurement truly reflects a valid physiological and pathological variable.

Transmitters and/or metal atoms in muscle mechanics.

Acetylcholine in concentrations of 10-5, 2 x 10-5, 5 x 10-5 and 10-4 in normal Ringer's solution causes contracture of different muscles of Rana esculenta. The similar effect brought about by KCl solution does not necessarily mean the same basic process leading to similar changes in muscle mechanics. Experiments made on many particular questions of muscle mechanics will possibly clarify the real role of single factors (e.g. transmitters, kations, anions, acids, alkalis. ATP, heat etc.) changing the mechanical state of muscular organs.

Evaluation of hypercoagulability in septic abortion.

Soluble fibrin monomer complexes (SFMC) were determined in patients with septic abortion (body temperatures of more than 39 degree C and/or chills without apparent signs of endotoxic shock), with infected abortion, with non-infected abortion and with normal pregnancies. Quantitative gel filtration (4% agarose) of beta-alanine precipitated plasma samples yielded the relative (percent of total fibrinogen content) and absolute (mg/100 ml plasma) amount of SFMC. The relative (5.5+/-1.4%, mean+/-SD) and absolute (21.5+/-8.6 mg/100 ml) amount of SFMC was significantly increased in patients with septic abortion compared to patients with normal pregnancies or non-infected abortion (p less than 0.001). Patients with infected abortion (p less than 0.001). Patients with infected abortion already revealed increased levels of SFMC (4.3+/-1.2%, 14.2+/-6.8 mg/100 ml) though their platelet count was still unaltered (infected abortion: 221+/-47 X 10(3) platelets/mm3; septic abortion; 99+/-36 X 10(3) platelets/mm3). The use of heparin in patients with septic abortion resulted in a decrease in SFMC. Chain characterization of SFMC frequently revealed a slight degradation of the alpha-chains probably due to fibrinolytic activity in vivo; gamma-gamma dimers representing intermolecular covalent bindings were not observed. The findings are in agreement with our former assumption that patients with septic abortion have a pronounced state of hypercoagulability.

Osmosis without solute.

Van't Hoff's misconception of the kinetics of solutes in a solution was long ago displaced by the thesis about osmotic water migration caused by the difference in chemical potential on the two sides of the semipermeable membrane. Consequently the osmotic process was now investigated when normal water and heavy water were separated by the "semipermeable" membrane. Due to the difference between the chemical potentials a substantial osomotic pressure was measured on the side of the heavy water simultaneously with a significant migration of water on both sides.
