Concentration and Metabolic Turnover of Indoles in Germinating Kernels of Zea mays L.

The amounts and rates of metabolic turnover of the indolylic compounds in germinating kernels of sweet corn were determined. Knowledge of pool size and rate of pool turnover has permitted: (a) identification of indole-3-acetyl-myo-inositol as the major chemical form for transport of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) from endosperm to shoot; (b) demonstration that the free IAA of the endosperm is turning over rapidly with a half-life of 3.2 hours; (c) identification of esters of IAA as the immediate precursors of IAA in the endosperm and shoot; (d) demonstration that neither tryptophan nor tryptamine is a major precursor of IAA for the seed or shoot; (e) identification of IAA-myo-inositol glycosides as precursors of IAA-myo-inositol.It is concluded that seedlings of Zea mays utilize esters of IAA, and not tryptophan or its derivatives, for the IAA requirements of the germinating seedling.

Amniotic fluid phospholipids measured by continuous-development thin-layer chromatography.

We describe a one-dimensional thin-layer chromatographic system for separation of amniotic fluid phosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine, and phosphatidylethanolamine in amniotic fluid. We utilize short-bed continuous development and "high performance" thin-layer chromatography. Phospholipids are detected with an antimony molybdate staining reagent and quantitated by transmittance densitometry. This system is more sensitive to changes in lecithin/sphingomyelin ratios than are planimetric evaluations.

Recurrences in herpes zoster.

Five persons who had had two attacks of zoster were culled from a series of 400 persons with herpes zoster or postzoster neuralgia (incidence, 1.25 percent). The likelihood of a person having an attack of this virus infection is considered to be between 1 and 2 percent. Hence it is possible that an episode of herpes zoster confers only temporary protection against a second attack. These figures indicate that recurrences are uncommon but do appear as often as primary attacks appear in those who never had this condition previously.

Electro-excision of melanomas.

Excision of primary malignant melanomas by a cautery (actual heat) or by endothermy (electric cutting current) is a simple method of management. It consists of excision of a disc of tissue that contains the evident malignancy plus some surrounding normal-appearing skin.

Prognosis of primary malignant melanomas.

In all probability, a patient with a primary malignant melanoma, but without clinical, radiological or other laboratory evidence of metastases, has a 75 to 80% chance of living five years and 55 to 65% of surviving for ten years regardless of other prognostic factors and the skill with which surgical therapy is applied. It has not been established whether or not malignant melanomas are absolutely curable.

The buried horizontal mattress suture.

The buried horizontal mattress suture (BHMS) is a new tension suture technique using synthetic absorbable polyglactin 910 suture. When used in minor surgery of the trunk and extremities, this technique eliminates significant suture marking.

A simple technique for managing digital mucous cysts.

Digital mucous cysts can be effectively managed by multiple needlings and expression of contents. This simple technique cures about two thirds of the lesions. Most of those remaining are reduced to small asymptomatic nodules.

An Inborn Error of Potassium Metabolism in the Tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum.

A mutant of the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) was obtained through treatment of the seed with ethyl methane sulfonate. Its chief distinguishing characteristic is the requirement for an extraordinarily high K concentration in the medium (20 mm) if it is to develop without pronounced K deficiency symptoms, while the wild type grows without any such symptoms at 0.1 to 0.2 mm K. The lesion of the K-inefficient mutant does not lie in its inability to absorb and translocate K.
