New superhard phases for three-dimensional C60-based fullerites

We have explored new possible phases of 3D C60-based fullerites using semiempirical potentials and ab initio density functional methods. We have found three closely related structures-two body-centered orthorhombic and one body-centered cubic-having 52, 56, and 60 tetracoordinated atoms per molecule. These 3D polymers result in semiconductors with bulk moduli near 300 GPa, and shear moduli around 240 GPa, which make them good candidates for new low density superhard materials.

[Hospital organization of cardiopulmonary resuscitation].

That hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be supported by an organized plan rather than on the skills of individual health care personnel is a universally agreed-upon principle. Such a plan should guarantee that needed materials are available and in working order in all departments and that the team assigned to carry out CPR arrives promptly. Personnel other than the specialized team should also receive CPR training appropriate to their posts. The main features of a CPR plan are related to the five steps in the chain of survival: a) identification of a patient to be resuscitated, a matter that has important ethical ramifications; b) early recognition of cardiac arrest; c) early defibrillation; d) basic CPR, and e) advanced CPR. The CPR plan should incorporate the automatic recording of system, population, event and outcome variables. Task forces responsible for establishing and maintaining the plan and its quality control will periodically review the data with the aim of detecting errors, correcting them or introducing improvements. Various international societies and CPR committees have recently suggested a uniform way (the Utstein style) of recording and presenting data to allow comparisons either from hospital to hospital or over time within a single center.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the mesentery.

We report a solitary fibrous tumor of the abdominal cavityt that presented as a encapsulated mass attached to the mesentery in a 33-yr-old man. Histologically, the lesion showed a disorganized arrangement of spindle cells in a collagenous background and prominent vascular channels of varying size. Tumor cells showed immunohistochemical reactivity for vimentin only. Cytokeratins and CD34 were negative. This report further extends the anatomic range of solitary fibrous tumor, a neoplasm that must be included in the differential diagnosis of well-defined abdominal masses. The behavior of this mesenteric solitary fibrous tumor has been benign.

Calcified leiomyoma of deep soft tissue. Report of a case in childhood.

This report illustrates a calcified leiomyoma of deep soft tissue in the left leg of a 6-year-old boy. The tumour was composed of spindle cells arranged in interlacing bundles, between which were multiple small and large areas of calcification. Tumour cells were positive for vimentin, desmin and smooth muscle actin. Ultrastructurally, the cells showed numerous pinocytotic vesicles and bundles of intracytoplasmic filaments with smooth muscle dense bodies. Only four calcified leiomyomas have been previously reported in the deep soft tissues of limbs. Here we report a new case and suggest a new pathogenetic scheme involving alkaline phosphatase in the origin of these calcifications.

Signet-ring stromal tumor of the ovary: a histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study.

We report a signet-ring stromal tumour found in the ovary of a 50-year-old woman. The solid tumour was composed of spindle and round cells which stained with vimentin and some round cells were vacuolated and had the appearance of signet-ring cells. The vacuoles were negative with periodic acid-Schiff, with and without diastase digestion, with alcian blue, Sudan III, alpha-1-antitrypsin and alpha-fetoprotein stains. Ultrastructurally, they were membrane bound and contained scantly flocculent material. Some neoplastic cells contained intracytoplasmic eosinophilic globules which were positive with alpha-1-antitrypsin. Signet-ring stromal tumour is a benign, morphologically distinctive type of ovarian stromal tumour, which may present problems in differential diagnosis with other stromal and non stromal ovarian neoplasms.

Failure to detect unique reactivity to streptococcal streptokinase in either the sera or renal biopsy specimens of patients with acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis.

Using purified group A streptokinase (SKA) as the antigen, ELISA assays were carried out on the sera of normal unaffected children, acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis patients (APSGN) and acute rheumatic fever patients (ARF). The results demonstrate that antibody titers to SKA increase with age in normal children and by age 8 years the vast majority of children have antibodies to SKA. APSGN patients did not demonstrate unique reactivity to SKA when compared to ARF patients either at time of onset of disease or during convalescence. Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to SKA which recognize both group A and C streptokinase failed to detect the presence of streptokinase in the biopsy sections obtained from ten well-documented APSGN patients. We conclude that there is no unique reactivity to group A streptokinase in the sera of APSGN patients. Furthermore, we failed to demonstrate the presence of streptokinase in the biopsy specimens of an early case of APSGN patients.

[The association of myasthenia gravis and hairy-cell leukemia].

Myasthenia gravis (MG) and tricholeucemia (TL) produce an important immune alteration favoring the appearance of neoplastic and autoimmune disorders. The case of a 53 years old patient who developed type B TL 5 years after the diagnosis of MG is reported. Upon revision of the literature, 37 cases of association of MG and malignant hemopathies, fundamentally lymphoproliferative were found. In general, MG precedes the appearance of the neoplastic process. The autoimmunity and immunodeficiency characteristic of MG probably constitute the pathogenic mechanism leading to the appearance of the neoplastic process.
