Fanconi's anemia in infancy. Report of a case diagnosed in the pre-anemic stage.

A 6 1/2-month-old girl is described, in whom the diagnosis of Fanconi's anemia in the pre-anemic stage was made on the basis of the following findings: growth failure, microcephaly, modest epicanthal folds, pigment spots, and chromosomal breaks. 4 months later progressive bone marrow failure developed and dramatically evolved into pancytopenia refractory to therapy.

Anemia, Aplastic↗

Tumor inhibitory agents from Vauquelinia corymbosa (Rosaceae).

The chloroform extract of Vauquelinia corymbosa Correa has shown activity against the P-388 lymphocytic leukemia test system. The constituents responsible for this activity were identified as uvaol, ursolic acid, and betulinic acid. Their identity was proven by melting point; mixed melting point; elemental analysis; IR, PMR, and mass spectra; and preparation of derivatives.

Antineoplastic Agents, Phytogenic↗

Unusual combination of immune and endocrine deficiencies. A possible case of early-onset Louis-Bar syndrome.

Immunodeficiency functionally limited to the B-cell system together with mild hypothyroidism and severe growth hormone deficiency was found in a 6 1/2-month-old female infant with recurrent infections and growth retardation. A lymph node biopsy and post mortem examination of the lymphoid organs surprisingly revealed severe deficiency of both thymus-dependent and bursa-equivalent systems. The unusual combination of immune and endocrine deficiencies posed a difficult diagnostic problem. The hypothesis of an early-onset Louis-Bar syndrome was suggested and apparently corroborated by the autopsy findings of ovarian dysgenesis and cerebellar degeneration. The dissociation between functional and morphological findings as regards the immunodeficiency, and the possible links between immune and endocrine derangements are discussed.

Ataxia Telangiectasia↗

Interdependence of thymic and neuroendocrine functions in ontogeny.

The immunological blockade of the adenohypophysis of athymic nude mice bearing allogeneic skin grafts prevents the reconstitution of transplantation immunity when such animals grafted with thymus, and the grafts are permanently accepted. Newborn and adult athymic mice have markedly diminished levels of prolactin in blood and abnormally high levels of luteotropic hormone. Implantation of the thymus normalizes blood levels of these two hormones. These findings affirm the role of the thymus in the organization of the maturing brain for endocrine functions and identify prolactin as one of the hormones which play a major role in immune differentiation in early ontogeny.
