Civil Service Retirement System annuitants and Social Security.

This article examines the extent to which annuitants of the Federal employee Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) are entitled to Social Security benefits. It is based on linked administrative data files from the two systems. Ninety-one percent of all those receiving CSRS annuities in 1979 had worked at some point in their careers in jobs that were covered by Social Security. Almost 80 percent of the annuitants aged 65 or older were entitled to Medicare benefits. Of those aged 62 or older, 73 percent were entitled to Social Security cash benefits, including 10 percent who were entitled only as spouses or survivors of workers covered under Social Security. About 39 percent of the female annuitants aged 62 or older were entitled to benefits as wives or widows of workers, including some who were also insured for benefits based on their own earnings. The average combined benefit for those with Social Security was +845 among annuitants aged 62 or older. For those receiving only CSRS annuities, the average was +959. Those not entitled to a Social Security benefit tended to have more years of Federal service and higher annuities than did those entitled to both a Social Security benefit and a CSRS annuity.

Bimodal age-frequency distribution of epitheliosis in cancer mastectomies: relevance to preneoplasia.

A census of epitheliosis in 500 consecutive cancer mastectomies has been carried out. The probability of concurrence of this phenomenon with cancer has a bimodal age-frequency distribution. It is high in cancer mastectomies from women in their early 40s, low in the late 50s and high again in the elderly. Epitheliosis during the reproductive life span is regarded as a reversible ovary-dependent abnormality. It is greatly increased in the premenopausal cancerous breast and it is thought that it carries increased risk for cancer initiation. In contrast the probability of epitheliosis in the breast in the elderly cancer patient is only slightly greater than in "noncancerous" post mortem breasts of similar age. Much of this "epitheliosis" may represent, in fact, indolent autonomous cancer though a small proportion could be epitheliosis supported by extraovarian estrogen.

Invasive and noninvasive assessment of pulmonic regurgitation: clinical, angiographic, phonocardiographic, echocardiographic, and Doppler ultrasound correlations.

Three patients with pulmonic regurgitation and no evidence of pulmonary hypertension were investigated. These patients had low pitched diastolic murmurs which increased on inspiration, evidence of connective tissue disease as manifested by lax joints and hyperextensible skin, and marked hilar dance which extended up to the peripheral vessels. Suprasternal echocardiography revealed dilatation and increased systolic expansion of the right pulmonary artery (RPA) (25% and 28%, respectively) in two patients; the third patient had a normal RPA dimension in diastole and a marked increase in diameter (88%) in systole. Thus, these three patients demonstrated hyperdistensibility of the RPA. The spectral signal from the pulsed doppler echocardiograph showed evidence of turbulent blood flow in diastole (wide dispersion of the dots) in the right ventricular outflow tract in all three patients. This pattern was indicative of pulmonic regurgitation. In summary, the combined use of echocardiography and Doppler ultrasound is useful in the evaluation of patients with pulmonic regurgitation.

Evidence for paracallosal verbal transfer after callosal section. A possible consequence of bilateral language organization.

The covert interhemispheric transfer of linguistic information was demonstrated in a commissurotomy patient with bilateral language organization. It was found that under conditions of unilateral stimulation, a verbal association established in one hemisphere was available to the untrained hemisphere as well. Such interhemispheric transfer was observed only for phonetically codable information. Moreover, transfer was not observed under conditions of simultaneous bilateral stimulation. These results suggest that the point of convergence between the left and right hemisphere language systems allows for the paracallosal transfer of linguistic information.

Polypeptide composition of fraction 1 protein of the somatic hybrid between Petunia parodii and Petunia parviflora.

The analysis of the subunit polypeptide composition of Fraction 1 protein provides information on the expression of both chloroplast and nuclear genomes. Fraction 1 protein, isolated from leaves of the somatic hybrid plants derived form the fusion of protoplasts of Petunia parodii and P. parviflora, was analyzed for its subunit polypeptide composition by isoelectric focusing in 8 M urea. The fraction 1 protein enzyme oligomer in the somatic hybrid plants contained small subunits resulting from the expression of both parental nuclear genomes, but probably only one of the parental large subunits, namely that of P. parodii. The relevance of such somatic hybrid material for the study of nucleocytoplasmic interrelationship is discussed, as well as the use of these fraction 1 protein isoelectric focusing patterns for the analysis of taxonomic relationships in Petunia.
