Puncture of thoracic lesions under sonographic guidance.

Thirty-six punctures of thoracic lesions have been performed with a compound B-scanner or a real-time linear-array scanner for guidance. Twenty-three fluid collections were punctured and aspiration biopsies were performed on 13 echogenic lesions. All the punctures were successful at the first attempt. No complications occurred. The results confirm the usefulness of sonography for guiding punctures of thoracic fluid effusions and solid masses. Usually a static B-scanner is sufficient, but when masses are small or surrounded by vital structures puncture may be controlled by a real-time scanner.

X-ray structures of two oxidation states of a flavin-nicotinamide biscoenzyme and models for flavin--nicotinamide interactions.

The flavin nicotinamide biscoenzymes Flox(-)--C3--Nic+ and H2Flred--C3--Nic+ assume extended conformations in the solid state. In both derivatives the nicotinamide and flavin groups associate through hydrogen bonding. The bending angle of the reduced flavin moiety is less than half that in any previously reported 1,5-dihydroflavin structure. This effect is apparently due to ring stacking interactions.

Chemical Phenomena↗

Crystal structure of a complex between lumiflavin and 2,6-diamino-9-ethylpurine: a flavin adenine dinucleotide model exhibiting charge-transfer interactions.

The x-ray structure of the deep red crystalline complex lumiflavin-2,6-diamino-9-ethylpurine has been determined. The flavin and adenine derivatives form hydrogen-bonded base pairs of the Watson-Crick type. The molecules in the crystal also associate via extensively overlapped flavin/adenine and flavin/flavin stacking interactions in which there are several contacts that are closer than van der Waals distances. This, together with the red color of the crystals, is indicative of the formation of a charge-transfer complex.

The crystal and molecular structure of an intermolecular complex between riboflavin and an adenosine derivative.

Riboflavin and the adenosine derivative 5'-bromo-5'-deoxyadenosine form a crystalline 1:1 intermolecular complex, the structure of which has been solved by x-ray diffraction analysis. The adenine ring is found to be joined by two hydrogen bonds to the uracillike end of the riboflavin isoalloxazine ring. In addition, the riboflavin and the adenosine molecules associate through the formation of stacks of alternating parallel adenine and isoalloxazine rings. These intermolecular associations are considered to be models for intramolecular association in the coenzyme flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), which contains both adenosine and riboflavin.

[Treatment of iatrogenic femoral pseudoaneurysms by ultrasound-guided percutaneous thrombin injection: effectiveness and complications].

AIM: We retrospectively assessed the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided percutaneous thrombin injection in the treatment of iatrogenic femoral pseudoaneurysms and registered the occurrence of complications in the systemic circulation. METHODS: We performed ultrasound-guided thrombin injection in 26 iatrogenic femoral pseudoaneurysms: 24 were classified as single en 2 as complex. We registered the volume and the pseudoaneurysm neck measurements, as well as the complication rate. RESULTS: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous thrombin injection led to a successful obliteration of pseudoaneurysm in 25 out of 26 cases (96.2%). The thrombin amount varied between 250 and 1000 IU. A thrombosis of the common femoral artery after the thrombin injection occurred only in one patient. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound-guided percutaneous thrombin injection is effective and safe in the treatment of iatrogenic femoral pseudoaneurysms provided the exclusion criteria are respected. Complications are rare.
