Effect of low dose laser on the chorioallantoic culture of retinal pigment cells.

Low dose laser effects were analysed in chorioallantoic cultures of retinal pigment cells. Decrease in cell sizes and increase in number of mitosis were observed in the experimental cultures. On the other hand, pyknosis did not change significantly following irradiation. Most cells in the control and experimental cultures formed groups. However, 2 types of detached cells were evident. The percentage of detached cells was higher in the experimental culture.

Aging in the retinas and the lateral geniculate bodies of the albino mice.

Aging of the retinas and the lateral geniculate bodies were studied by biochemical, morphometrical, and ultrastructural means. A decrease in the phagosome number in the central retinas were recorded in the aged mice. In the lateral geniculate bodies of the aged animals, the neurons showed a decrease in nuclear volume and the microglia cells were active.

Biochemical and cytochemical studies of the lateral geniculate bodies after optic nerve ligature.

The short term effect of optic nerve ligature was studied by analysing the lateral genuiclate bodies. There was significant difference in total RNA amount per unit tissue between the contralateral and ipsilateral sides 1 week after ligation. There were, however, no observable difference in the acid phosphatase activity and the quantity of contacts between the two sides. The dopamine receptors on the membranes also were much higher in number in the contralateral side.

The effect of low dose laser on the functional activities of the mice retina.

The amount of uridine uptake of the retina, the phagosome number and the acid phosphatase activity of the pigment epithelial cells after low dose laser treatment were studied. It was found that uridine uptake in the treated retina increased as early as one hour after laser treatment and then gradually returned to normal. The phagosome number showed a decrease 15 minutes after treatment followed by an increase. Finally it returned to normal 160 hours post-treatment. Higher acid phosphatase activity was found in the laser treated eye one hour and 16 hours after treatment and becoming normal again after 40 hours. It was postulated that the synthetic rate of the visual cells was stimulated by laser treatment. The increase in the shedding of the rod outer segments occurred simultaneously with the increase of phagocytic activity of the pigment epithelial cells. The increase of acid phosphatase activity of the pigment epithelial cells was a consequence of the increased phagocytic activity.

Neuronal cells and types of contacts in the owl's retina.

A total of 20 types of neuronal cells were impregnated in the owl's retina which included 2 horizontals, 3 bipolars, 8 amacrines and 7 ganglion cells. A number of synapses were evident and were divided into simple and complex categories; the former involved 2 types of cells and the latter more types. The implication of some of the findings were speculated.

Cell kinetic in retinal cell morphogenesis.

The nuclear volumes and the percentage of pycnosis were studied in the various forms of retinal cells as related to the critical stages of morphogenesis. Each cell type was found to have a different mode of nuclear volume increase. The percentage of pycnosis was found to be highest at the stages when the inner and outer segments were established, i.e., a stage when the retinal circuitry was completed.

Animals↗

Aging in retinas and optic nerves of 2.5- to 9-month-old mice.

Aging of the retina and optic nerve was studied in 2.5- to 9-month-old albino mice. A change was found in the number of visual cells and in the distribution of large versus small optic nerve fibers. No significant change was found in the number of retinal phagosomes and in the total number of optic nerve fibers.

Age Factors↗

Comparative ultrastructural study of the optic nerves and visual cortices of young (2.5 months) and old (17 months) mice.

The aging optic nerves and visual cortices were studied in mice. Changes in the morphology of neuroglia were evident in the optic nerve but no difference in the numbers of neurotubules or myelin sheaths optic nerve fibers in the aged were observed. Large myelinated fibers, however, begun to degenerate. In the aging visual cortices, a higher proportion of dendrodendritic contacts were present and microglia cells were found to be active.
