Malignant atrophic papulosis: treatment with aspirin and dipyridamole.

On electron microscopy of the endothelial cells of a patient with cutaneous and CNS symptoms of malignant atrophic papulosis, paramyxovirus-like particles could be seen in the cytoplasm. These particles were interpreted as degenerative changes that were due to ischemia. Coagulation studies showed increased thrombocyte aggregation, and treatment with the platelet-suppressive drugs, aspirin and dipyridamole, was instituted. This treatment resulted in a normal thrombocyte aggregation after eight months and complete clinical remission, which still persisted four months after cessation of therapy.

Onychomycosis caused by Aspergillus terreus.

Four cases of onychomycosis caused by Aspergillus terreus are presented. The clinical characteristics consisted of spotted and striated leuconychia, dark spots and fragility of the nails. The mycology is described, and is shown that A. terreus has an inhibitory effect on the growth of dermatophytes and Scopulariopis brevicaulis. Topical treatment with 1% Pimafucin in a mixture of 60% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and 40% water as well as 9% aqueous solution of sodium benzoate were both effective. The literature concerning onychomycosis caused by A. terreus is summarized.

A comparison of the 16S ribosomal RNAs from mesophilic and thermophilic bacilli: some modifications in the Sanger method for RNA sequencing.

Two modifications in the Sanger two dimensional electrophoretic procedure for RNA analysis are reported. One increases resolution on the primary fingerprint to the point that digests of large RNAs, of the size 1500-3000 nucleotides yield well resolved fingerprint patterns. The other is a novel endonucleolytic procedure that proves useful in determining sequences of the large oligonucleotides produced by T1 ribonuclease. These modifications have been used in determining the catalogs of oligomers produced by T1 ribonuclease digestion of 16S rRNAs from three related organisms, Bacillus subtilis, B.pumilus and B.stearothermophilus. The possible effects of adaptation to a thermophilic niche on ribosomal RNA primary structure and the phylogenetic relatedness of the two mesophilic Bacilli are discussed.

Urinary pseudouridine and beta-aminoisobutyric acid in patients with low grade urothelial tumours. Relations between excretion and tumour recurrence.

The simultaneous 24 hours excretion of pseudouridine and beta-aminoisobutyric acid in the urine from patients treated for low grade urothelial tumours has been determined and related to tumour recurrence inside of 6 months after the determinations. The results of 53 assays in 39 patients without clinical signs of recurrence at the time of the detrmination showed a high excretion of pseudouridine in 53% and of beta-aminoisobutyric acid in 28.5% of the assays. Recurrences appeared more often after a high urinary pseudouridine (53.5%) than after a low, but the difference was not statistically significant (p more than 0.05) and more often after a low urinary beta-aminoisobutyric acid (52.5%) than after a high (p less than 0.01). The highest incidence of recurrence was in patients with a simultaneously high urinary pseudouridine and a low urinary beta-aminoisobutyric acid. Seventy per cent of these excretion patterns were from patients, who developed a recurrence before 6 months (p less than 0.002).

Sequence studies on 16S ribosomal RNA from a blue-green alga.

The 16S ribosomal RNA of the blue green alga Anacystis nidulans has been characterized in terms of the oligomers generated by digestion with T1 ribonuclease. A. nidulans by this criterion is definitely a procaryote; being no more distant from Bacilli or Enterics than the latter two are from one another. A. nidulans appears to be somewhat more closely related to the Bacilli than to the Enterics.

A long term clinical study evaluating the effect of two dentifrices on oral tissues.

1. A long term (54 months) supervised, double-blind human clinical study has been conducted to ascertain whether the routine use of a commercially available cosmetic dentifrice, with purported stain removal and flavor impact characteristics, would cause adverse manifestations in the oral tissues, as compared to the similar use of a more conventional type of commercially available dentifrice. 2. One hundred and twenty male and female subjects (aged 12 to 70) were randomly assigned to the use of one of the two dentifrices under investigation, after which they used the assigned dentifrices twice daily (1 min each brushing) under supervised conditions for a period of 54 months. 3. Clinical examinations were conducted on all subjects initially (base line), and at 3-month intervals throughout the 54-month course of the study. This examination included a complete and thorough inspection of the oral soft and hard tissues. 4. The results after 54 months of continuous use of the dentifrices (representing a total dentifrice/oral tissues exposure time of approximately 45 hours per subject) indicated that neither of the two dentifrices caused any adverse reactions of the oral soft tissues and that both dentifrice groups had similar patterns and levels of cervical abrasion and/or erosion. 5. The results also indicate a lack of direct correlation between laboratory abrasivity values (as determined by a radioactive dentin abrasion procedure) and the clinical situation, thus suggesting that factors other than dentifrice abrasivity may play an important role with regard to tooth wear.

A study on the clinical significance of urinary beta-aminoisobutyric acid in patients with urothelial tumours.

Urinary beta-aminoisobutyric acid (beta-AIB) has been measured in 141 patients with urothelial tumours and 60 controls. Ninetyone of the patients have been followed-up for an average period of about 2 years, which included many determinations of the beta-AIB excretion. Thirtysix patients died during the control periods. Urinary beta-AIB was found to be significantly correlated to the grade of tumour cell dysplasia, but not to the clinical tumour stage. The treatment had no major influence on the excretion. Characteristic changes in the excretion preceding high-grade tumour recurrences are demonstrated. Autopsy findings with tumour tissue in the urinary tract and distant metastases were significantly correlated to a low urinary beta-AIB in the terminal phase of the disease. The results are discussed in relation to the degradation of thymine, the dual origin of beta-AIB and the tumour-host metabolism. It is concluded, that urinary beta-AIB can contribute to the graduation of malignancy, but is not valuable as a general screening procedure for urothelial cancer.
