The development of tolerance to the anticonvulsant effect of chronically administered phenobarbital was demonstrated in mice by the maximal electroshock (MES) test. Anticonvulsant activity decreased 50% over a 5 day period. Brain and plasma levels of phenobarbital measured 2 hr after a 25 mg/kg dose of phenobarbital were the same between days 1 and 5, indicating that distributional or pharmacokinetic parameters were not involved. The loss of anticonvulsant activity of phenobarbital is primarily related to the drug's effect to prevent the spread of MES-induced epileptic neuronal activity. In contrast, the anticonvulsant action of phenobarbital on seizure threshold, as measured by the minimal electroshock seizure threshold (EST) test, and on the spread of epileptic discharge induced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), as evaluated by the PTZ infusion test, remained unchanged.
gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) was measured in the plasma of volunteers during subchronic treatment with sodium valproate (VPA). After 2 days of oral treatment with 300 mg VPA, t.i.d., the GABA concentration was increased to about 30% compared to 2 control days. This response was similar to that after 2 days of treatment with 600 mg VPA, t.i.d., whereas on the fourth day of treatment with the latter dose, a plasma GABA increase of about 90% was observed.

30 autopsy cases of gliomas (5 fusiform glioblastomas, 5 multiform glioblastomas, 5 fibrillary astrocytomas, 5 protoplasmic astrocytomas, 5 oligodendrogliomas, 5 spongioblastomas) were studied by means of morphometry. 7 parameters (volume and area parameters of tumor vessels and of tumor cell nuclei, mitoses) were tested for the ascertainament of useful quantitative criteria for the objective differentiation of the gliomas. 210 statistical comparisons were carried out. Significant differences were observed in 32 of them. It could be demonstrated that the parameters of the tumor cell nuclei are most useful in the differentiation of the gliomas. Significant differences do not exist between fusiform glioblastoma--multiform glioblastoma, fusiform glioblastoma--oligodendroglioma, fibrillary and protoplasmic astrocytoma--spongioblastoma.
In artificially hypoxic rabbit foetuses, rising hydrogen ion concentration with excessive precipitation of fibrin in the microcirculation, with pH values between 7.0 and 6.9, was followed by discontinuation of DIC on account of predominant regular occurrence of secondary fibrinolysis. Such processes of secondary fibrinolysis, which could be inhibited by para-amino methylbenzoic acid (PAMBA), were found to be capable of re-opening completely the circulatory tracks in surviving foetuses. In other cases, they might persist beyond death and cover up pathologico-anatomic findings, if neglected.
A content analysis of health sciences library positions available in 1977-1978, as advertised in the MLA News, presents the professional requirements sought by employers of applicants. Data for 414 advertised positions were coded and are displayed in nine tables. Variables selected from the range of positions advertised include: type of position, years of experience, subject background, Medical Library Association, and on-line experience. Geographic distribution of jobs is also given.
Detailed presentation of "Crohn's disease" according to the present knowledge including epidemiology, etiopathology, pathological anatomy, histology, history, clinical features, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, medical management, surgical treatment, prognostic outcome, complications and cancer risk.
Application of uninvolved propanidid-infusion anaesthesia to a rabbit in advanced pregnancy is reported in this paper. Uteroplacental circulation was found to be but slightly affected. The condition of the foetuses, consequently, may be considered sufficiently safe for intra-uterine experiments.
From 1947 to 1978 147 patients suffering from rectal cancer were seen at the Surgical Department of Medizinische Akademie Dresden: 23% stage Dukes A und 21% Dukes B, C and D at a time. 74 out of 132 patients had their malignoma in a distance of less than 12 cm from the anus and should have been diagnosed by digital palpation. But this happened only in a percentage of 34. Only 58% of the patients underwent radical surgery (abdomino-perineal amputation of the rectum), in all other cases only palliation could be achieved.
Treatment was given for 34 757 childbirths and 5,317 abortions at the Gynaecological Hospital of Medizinische Akademie Erfurt, GDR, between 1967 and 1977. Disorders of coagulation were recorded from 0.207 per cent of all cases. These had been caused by premature placental detachment, amnion infection, dead foetus syndrome, amniotic fluid embolism, septic abortion, and missed abortion. Incidence, mortality, and therapeutic policies are discussed.
