Alpha-globulin-like antigens in bacteria.

Seventy-two strains of bacteria of the families Bacillaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Micrococcaceae were investigated for antigens resembling Gm (1), Gm (2) and Inv (1) human immunoglobulin group factors. Antigens similar to these factors were encountered in some strains of the genus Bacillus. Staph. epidermidis strains had antigenic structures resembling Gm (1) and Inv (1) factors, and strains of Enterobacteriaceae structures resembling Gm (2) and Inv (1). Occurrence among various species of bacteria of antigens resembling human gamma-globulin group factors suggests immunization by bacterial infection as one of the causes of presence of anti-Gm and anti-Inv antibodies in human beings.

The rare PGM1 7-1 phenotype in a Polish family.

The phenotype PGM1 7-1 is described in eight members of a Polish family. Analysis of the findings confirmed the hereditary character of this phenotype, dependent on presence of the PGM71 gene in conjunction with the PGM11 gene in all the subjects examined.

GPT polymorphism in the Polish population.

In a sample of the Polish population numbering 703 subjects, three GPT types were encountered with the following frequencies: GPT1-1 0.265, GPT 2-1 0,509 and GPT 2-20.226. Frequencies of GPT1 and GPT2 genes were 0.519 and 0.481 respectively. Distribution of types in 217 mother-child pairs and in 12 families with 36 children was consistent with the hypothesis that the GPT system is dependent on a pair of codominant alleles and confirms that the GPT 1-1 and GPT 2-2 types are homozygotes, and GPT 2-1 is a heterozygote.

Frequency of occurrence of the Gm(21) factor in the Polish population.

In a sample of the Polish population of 610 subjects, frequency of the Gm(21) factor was determined and compared with the frequency of Gm(1). The Gm(21) factor was found with a frequency of 0.359, and Gm(1) with 0.370. Both factors were present in 35.7% of sera examined. Factor Gm(1) alone, unaccompanied by Gm(21), was encountered in 8 sera, and factor Gm(21) without Gm(1) only in one serum.

Gene Frequency↗

Frequency and heredity of ADA types in the Polish population.

Phenotypes of the ADA system were determined in a population sample of n = 208. Two ADA phenotypes were encountered: ADA 1-1 with a frequency of 0-82, and ADA 2-1 with a frequency of 0-18. Gene frequencies were: ADA1 = 0-911 and ADA2 = 0-089. Distribution of phenotypes in 9 families with 28 children and in 93 mother-child pairs was consistent with the hypothesis of heredity of the ADA group system.

Adenosine Deaminase↗

Frequency of genes and heredity of AK types in the Polish population.

Types of the AK groups system were determined in a sample of the Polish population numbering 660 subjects. Two phenotypes were found: AK 1-1 with a frequency of 0-933, and AK 2-1 with a frequency of 0-067. Gene frequencies were AK1 = 0-967 and AK2 = 0-033. Distribution of phenotypes in 62 families with 195 children was consistent with the hypothesis according to which heredity of AK types depends on two codominant alleles.

Isoantibodies to human serum proteins in children after blood and plasma transfusions.

The influence of blood and blood-product therapy was studied in two groups of children: 1) 90 children who had exchange transfusion after birth because of serologic incompatibility (aged 5 months to 5 years). In 7 children of this group isoprecipitins were detected. In 4 cases they reacted probably with lipoprotein group factors. One child had anti-Gm 2 antibodies. 2) 32 patients with various blood diseases, aged 18 months to 17 years, who had multiple transfusions of blood or plasma. In 12 children of this group (38%), precipitins were demonstrated. Two had antibodies to lipoprotein group factors. No anti-Gm antibodies were discovered in this group of children. The results of the study indicate an influence of transfusions of blood and blood products on the formation of antibodies to human proteins.
