[Studies of bovine Mycoplasma mastitis. 4. Serological classification of Mycoplasma strains isolated from 3 stocks].

Thirty-two isolates from altered milk samples taken from cows with mastitis of two herds were serologically tested by the WHT against rabbit hyperimmune sera of 16 reference and type strains. The strains tested were associated and grouped in the following way: 16 M. bovis, nine A. laidlawii, and seven A. axanthum. The classification of on M. bovis strain was confirmed by SHT. Five isolates from another stock, with biochemical properties related to the family of mycoplasmataceae, were not serologically identified.

[Studies of Mycoplasma mastitis in cattle. 6. Testing of Mycoplasma isolated from milk for udder pathogenicity].

Strains of M. bovis, A. laidlawii, A. axanthum, and one unidentified strain of the family of mycoplasmataceae as well as altered secretion obtained from cows with mastitis were intracisternally applied in experiments and proved to be pathogenic to cattle udder. The results are likely to suggest the importance of mycoplasma isolated from the milk of mastitis cows to the aetiology of enzootic mastitis in three large dairy cattle stocks. Intravenous application of M. bovis and A. laidlawii caused neither mastitis nor mycoplasma secretion in the milk.

[Studies of Mycoplasma mastitis in cattle. 7. Mycoplasma mastitis in 3 dairy cattle herds].

Reported in this paper is the occurrence of enzootic mastitis in three dairy cattle stocks. The outbreaks had been caused by Mycoplasma bovis, Acholeplasma laidlawii, Acholeplasma axanthum as well as by one unidentified strain of the family of mycoplasmataceae. All animals with positive response to mycoplasma tests were identified an selected by repetitive testing of cultures in milk samples which had been taken from all lactating and dry cows and heifers as well as by evaluation of organ samples obtained from slaughtered cows. Regular cleaning and disinfection of stands in cowsheds, cattle tracks, and milk parlours as well as disinfection of udders and milking cups worked extremely well throughout the action in control of those cases of enzootic mycoplasma mastitis.

Acholeplasma↗

[Acholeplasma laidlawii--a pathogenic or apathogenic species?].

The question is discussed, whether Acholeplasma laidlawii is a pathogenic or apathogenic species. Studies have shown that it is a species of potential pathogenicity, however, with virulence properties differing greatly by strains. Nothing so far has become known of contributive factors which might be needed for an infectious disease to develop.

[Effect of aspirin and indomethacin on changes caused by Pateurella multocida toxins in calves].

Acetylsalicyclic acid acid (50 mg/kg die) and indomethacin (1.5 mg/kg die) were administered to calves three days prior to intravenous application of endotoxin. Such treatment resulted in delayed occurence of clinical symptoms and higher survival rates, as compared to untreated controls. Parameters relating to coagulation physiology, changed by endotoxin, were not controllable with statistical security by administration of acetylsalicyclic acid indomethacin.

[Coagulation analytical studies in coli enterotoxemia in swine].

Store pigs with spontaneous outbreaks and experimental endotoxin shock were kept under observation in the context of coagulation analysis. Heparin was applied to some of the animals to disrupt the plasmatic coagulation system. The thrombocyte count in animals with endotoxin infusion declined by some 50 to 65 percent of the original level. No statistically secured difference was found to exist between heparinised animals, on the one hand, and non-heparinised, on the other. The aggregation and adhesion of thrombocytes in all shock animals was more pronounced than that in the controls. The fibrinogen levels were lowered in both the animals with spontaneous outbreaks and the experimental animals. Thrombocyte alteration was not found to have been dependent on activation of the plasmatic coagulation system. In endotoxin shock cases activation of plasmatic coagulation proteins was found to be preceded by rise in thrombocyte aggregation.

[The reaction of calves to parenteral administration of cyclopheosphamide].

One single injection of 50 mg/kg live weight cyclophosphamide or more to calves was followed by a latency of few days after which pneumonia or enteritis developed and caused death within one or two weeks. Cyclophosphamide application led to pronounced changes in the white blood count characterised, at the beginning, by rise of neutrophilic granulocytes and decline of lymphocates. Primary rise of granulocytes then was followed by almost complete disappearance of them. In those calves that survived the parameters of the white blood count were not restoredto normal until several weeks had elapsed. While an injection of 30 mg/kgcyclophosphamide usually was tolerated without any visible clinical reaction, it was also accompanied by the above pronounced changes in the white blood count. The activity of the reticulohistiocytary system, as recordable by means of ink and bacterial clearance, was not markedly affected by one single injection of 30mg/kg or 40 mg/kg cyclophosphamide. Calves with cyclophosphamide treatment exhibited unambigous humoral immune response, yet somewhat delayed or reduced in comparison to controls. While one single intravenous injectionof 30 mg/kg cyclophosphamide alone failed to trigger any clinical disease, it proved to be capable of rendering calves more susceptible to pneumonia pathogens. It, therefore, might be suitable for supporting experimental infection and thus facilitating the study of enzootic pneumonia of calf which usually is difficult to reproduce.

[Incidence of Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae in sheep].

Out a total number of 19 mycoplasma strain from diseased sheeps, 5 strains were used for further investigations. The 5 strains were differentiated as Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae. The relation between mycoplasma findings and the disease is discussed.

[Influence of Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella-multocida endotoxin on the blood-coagulation-analytic parameter after experimental administration in calves].

Experimental administration to calves of Pasteurella multocida or the application of an endotoxin preparation of the strain produced continuous decline of thrombocytes, disorders in thrombocytic functions, and the development of hypofibrinogenaemia. The changes recorded as well as the clinical symptoms and pathologico-anatomic findings are interpreted as endotoxin shock.

[Immuno-prevention of coli infections in swine using live vaccine. 1. Use in coli infections during the 1st days of life].

Live vaccine prepared from streptomycin-dependent mutants of E. coli was well tolerated in various doses and at various times of administration, for there were no adverse reactions. There was no evidence of reversion to a virulent form. Efficacy was closely related to frequency of application of the vaccine. Vaccination must be performed as early as possible to immunize against infection during the first few days of life. It was possible to confer protection against the diarrhoea that occurs at 3-4 weeks of age. The use of an oral vaccine under intensive husbandry systems was shown to be safe. When the piglets were kept in cages, the vaccine could be administered in the existing mixing tanks for water supply, without the need for special equipment. Oral immunization of pigs already infected or already ill did not aggravate the existing infection, whether the animals were housed individually or in pens. Because of the dilution effect of the mixing tank and water supply pipes, the dose of vaccine, given on ten successive days, should be calculated at 10(9) organisms of the E. coli mutant per animal. This should supply a number close to the desired bacterial count of 10(10) organisms per animal daily. Immunization significantly reduced the frequency of gastrointestinal diseases during the first three weeks of age in piglets.

Significance of renewal asymmetry in bone scans: experience in 795 cases.

A retrospective study of 795 consecutive bone scans employing either 18F or 99mTc-pyrophosphate to evaluate the diagnostic value of renal asymmetry in such scans has been carried out. It is concluded that asymmetric renal images in bone scans convey relatively specific information regarding renal pathology, especially in the 99mTc-pyrophosphate studies.
