[Urinary tract infections: bacteriological aspects of recurrent cystitis].

Gram-negative bacteria, and above all E. coli and Proteus sp., cause the great part of UTI. Some characters of microorganisms (as the capsular K antigen, the production of haemolysin and the endotoxin of cell wall) can affect the invasive capacity and the virulence of E. coli. The bacterial adherence, due to the presence of fimbriae, seems to be correlated to the persistence of microorganisms in lower urinary tract. Moreover Enterobius vermicularis, intestinal parasite frequent in infancy, can transport in girls E. coli strains from the rect, through the urethra, to the bladder. The data regarding the importance of the immune local response are not clear yet.

[Group A streptococci: serotypes isolated in a pediatric environment].

We examined the incidence of different types of group A Streptococci in children with various (mostly respiratory) diseases. The 85.6% of strains assayed were T typable; they belonged more frequently to "5-11-12-27-44" T complex, to type T12, T1, "3-13-B3264" T complex and T4. An increase of type 1 and 4 was found in streptococcal strains isolated more recently.

[Adhesion of Streptococci to different types of cells].

15 Streptococcus strains of different groups and types were assessed to evaluate the capacity to adhere to tissue culture cells "in vitro" (WISH, MDCK, RK-13 cells). This ability is not similar for different cells and not type-specific in group A Streptococci, but it seems more elevated in M+ strains. The microscopic technique generally agree to the radioactive one, nevertheless using both methods it is possible to improve the results.

Adhesiveness↗

[Effect of gamma-interferon on the adherence of streptococci to different murine cell lines].

In the present study we analyze IFN-gamma capability to modulate bacterial adherence of group A Streptococci to murine cells such as fibroblast (L-929) or phagocytic cells (P 388 and PP-induced macrophages). IFN-gamma increases adherence of Streptococci to macrophages but not to L-929 cells. This finding could have important implication for the "in vivo" adhesion of bacteria to phagocytic cells.

[Toxoplasmosis: comparative serological diagnosis (direct agglutination, complement fixation, hemagglutination inhibition tests) in order to attempt to clarify the diverse periods of infection in man].

Large diffusion of human toxoplasmotic infection and consequent injuries that, sometimes, occur in pregnancy and to the newborn, have been and are principal stimulus to study and to set several diagnostic means to specify, directly or indirectly, acute infection and acquired immunity. Serological methods are, at least till now, the best diagnostic means; among these, we have selected 3 methods: IHA (Behring), CF (I.S.M.) and DA (Bio-Mérieux); with which have been tested 125 sera (selected randomly). Obtained results have been elaborated statistically according to some interpretative perspectives which have been considered the most significant. Da test, that had a propensity to understimulation of serum-positive cases, would show a good sensibility about acute or recent infections and would be positive more difficulty about past infections. IHA test, on the contrary, that showed the greatest percentage of erroneously positive results, had, on the whole, a opposite propensity, but it would seem, with some reservations, also adaptable to the search of acute infections. CF test, rather complicated and long, would seem most versatile of three tests fitting well both to the search of past immunity and to serological diagnosis of acute infection, thanks to the new TTE antigen use.

[Assay of IgA specific anti-Trichomonas vaginalis in vaginal secretions by indirect immunofluorescence].

30 vaginal secreta of women affected by acute and chronic trichomoniasis from the Gynaecological Hospital S. Anna of Turin were examined. In the same secreta the specific IgA anti Trichomonas vaginalis were detected using indirect immunofluorescence and titered on LC-Partigen IgA immunodiffusion plates. Only in 30% of these cases a correlation between immunodiffusion and fluorescence test resulted.
