Magnetic resonance imaging of pediatric foot and ankle disorders.

The authors present magnetic resonance imaging as an accurate modality that is available for evaluating lower extremity pediatric pathology. They examine various disorders, and review proper magnetic resonance techniques. Soft tissue, cartilaginous, and certain osseous abnormalities are inspected.

Diagnostic imaging of trauma to the ankle and foot: I. Fractures about the ankle.

Drs. Mitchell et al. provide a valuable radiologic perspective of trauma to the ankle. The review is divided into six parts. The initial presentation deals with ankle fractures. Subsequent dialogues will consist of ligamentous injuries, trauma to the talus, calcaneal fractures, midfoot, and forefoot injuries. Plain x-ray film, as well as sophisticated studies, will assist in recognizing these conditions.

Diagnostic imaging of trauma to the ankle and foot: IV. Fractures of the calcaneus.

Drs. Mitchell et al. provide a valuable radiologic perspective of trauma to the ankle and foot. This review is divided into six parts. The previous presentations involved ankle fractures, ligamentous injuries, and trauma to the talus. Subsequent dialogues will consist of midfoot and forefoot injuries. Plain x-ray films, as well as sophisticated studies, will assist in recognizing these conditions.

Fast scan magnetic resonance of Achilles tendonitis.

One of the principal drawbacks to clinical implementation of magnetic resonance imaging is comparatively long imaging times involved. A case is reported here where the most useful image sequence for the diagnosis of Achilles tendinitis was also the shortest--a sagittal, low flip, angle-scan.

Magnetic resonance imaging of tendons in the foot and ankle.

MRI promises to play an important role in the imaging evaluation of the diabetic foot. It offers superior contrast discrimination capability as compared to CT, and is capable of distinguishing among the various types of abnormal soft tissue encountered in the diabetic foot. It is also extremely sensitive to early progression of soft tissue infection to bone and joints.

Pictorial analysis--computed tomography of trauma to the ankle and hindfoot.

A pictorial overview of the utility of computed tomography in the diagnosis and characterization of traumatic lesions affecting the ankle and hindfoot is provided. The technique is of particular importance in the setting of triplane, calcaneal, and talar fractures as well as tibiotalar and subtalar dislocations.

Nonspecific inflammation in the foot demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging.

The authors present a brief review of the literature concerning magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as applied to the musculoskeletal system. Two patients are presented with nonspecific foot pain. MRI demonstrated an area of hyperintensity, suggestive of an inflammatory process, in both cases. Biopsy later confirmed the diagnosis of chronic inflammation.

The painful shoulder: MR imaging of the glenohumeral joint.

We used magnetic resonance imaging in 41 patients with shoulder pain. Magnetic resonance was found useful in depicting the spectrum of rotator cuff abnormalities associated with mechanical impingement including both large and small rotator cuff tears as well as tendinitis. Abnormalities of the capsular mechanism, osseous tumors, osteonecrosis, and injuries to the supporting musculature are also well depicted.
