Altered activation of rat hepatic cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases with increasing age.
The activity ratio of hepatic cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase has been found to change with increasing age in male, Long-Evans rats. In rats 35 days old (135 g), the activity ratio (cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase activity measured in the absence and presence of exogenous cyclic AMP) was 0.76, it increased to 0.92 in rats 75 days old (315 g) and to 0.98 in rats 305 days old (646 g). This change in the activity ratio seems to correlate with the ability of aging animals to respond to a stimulus, and may be a primary mechanism in the biochemistry of aging.

Barium sulphate preparations for use in double contrast examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
Physical properties relevant to upper gastrointestinal radiology have been compared for five barium sulphate preparations and related to radiographic results. Evaluation of particles (size and stability) and whole suspension (dispersibility and fluidity) resulted in ranking of the preparations generally in accord with that based on radiological experience in double contrast examinations of the stomach. Experiments with extirpated pig stomach revealed a tendency for large particles in a low viscosity barium sulphate suspension to settle in mucosal grooves. This is believed to contribute to good radiographic definition of both the areae gastricae and small lesions. Particle size is therefore important and susceptibility to flocculation, a possible cause of random change in size during use, was assessed by measuring particle electrophoretic mobility under varying conditions; quantitative differences in suspension flow and dispersibility were also demonstrated. Fluidity and dispersibility together with rapid sedimentation of suitably sized particles resistant to flocculation underlie the successful use of low viscosity high density barium sulphate suspensions.
The detection and use of hemoglobin mutants in the direct analysis of human globin genes.
Many human globin-chain mutants contain amino acid replacements that result from single base changes in the corresponding globin gene. Using recombinants, the coding sequences of each of the alpha-, beta-, Ggamma-, and Agamma-globin genes have now been determined. Those sequences of DNA that are cleaved by a number of specific restriction endonucleases have been identified and accurately positioned. Mutations at these sequences abolish the restriction site, and therefore, the pattern of DNA fragments containing hybridizing globin-gene sequences is altered compared to DNA from normal persons. This allows the identification of one of a pair of cross-hybridizing human globin-gene sequences, as is shown here for the two alpha-globin, the two gamma-globin, and the delta- and beta-globin genes.
Extracapsular cataract extraction, lens implantation and cyclodialysis.
Combined extracapsular cataract extraction, lens implantation and cyclodialysis appear to have good functional results, as seen in our clinical experience with 238 cases. Glaucoma medications were eliminated in 54% of the cases with 87% reaching postoperative control of the intraocular pressure. There were no significant complications, and it appears that the combined operation is preferable to doing a glaucoma procedure and a cataract extraction at separate times with an interval in between. When a cataract extraction is indicated in a glaucomatous eye, we recommend a cyclodialysis be performed at the time of an extracapsular cataract extraction with lens implantation.

Reliability of the CPRS between the disciplines of psychiatry, general practice, nursing and psychology in depressed patients.
To test the reliability and robustness of the CPRS in use by different disciplines we obtained 49 pairs of ratings on depressed patients in England and Sweden during treatment. Each rater pair consisted of a psychiatrist trained as a rater plus either a psychologist, a general practitioner, or a nurse, who had not been trained as a rater. The 17 most commonly rated items in depressive illness showed good inter-rater reliability for all groups and demonstrated the robustness of the scale even in training sessions. The implications of this for future interdisciplinary research are discussed along with suggestions for the use of the CPRS for teaching purposes.
Cross cultural studies on the use of CPRS in English and Swedish depressed patients.
54 English and 52 Swedish patients suffering from primary depressive illness were rated on the full 65 item CPRS scale to examine cross cultural differences. The correlation of the frequencies of items scored in the different patient samples was highly significant (r = 0.88). Of the most commonly scored items (occurring in more than 70% of any of the patient groups) 17 were common to both samples. The three items not in common for the two centres are compared and discussed. The inter rater reliabilities of the Swedish and English teams are compared alongside the inter rater reliabilities of a Swedish rater and an English rater on English patients and are generally good. The remarkable similarity of the psychopathology of primary depressive illness in both cultures and some of the implications are discussed.
