[Is iatrogenic femoral nerve paralysis avoidable in vaginal operations?].

A decrease of damages to the femoral nerve could be proved clinically, and for a small group electromyographically too, after using leg supports in vaginal surgery. The general use of adjustable legholders is recommended for exact positioning of legs with a flexion angle of 45 degree or more and an abduction angle of 45 degree maximally.

Regions of SV40 large T antigen necessary for oligomerization and complex formation with the cellular oncoprotein p53.

The simian virus 40 (SV40) T antigen is composed of 708 amino acids and forms monomers and various oligomers and, in small amounts, heterologous complexes with the cellular oncoprotein p53 (T-p53). Using SV40 mutants coding for T antigen fragments which are either deleted in the N-terminal half or truncated by various lengths at the C-terminal end, we found that a region between amino acids 114 and 152 and a C-terminal region up to amino acid 669 are essential for the formation of high Mr oligomers of T antigen. Furthermore, only the C-terminal end up to amino acid 669 is essential for T-p53 complex formation but not the N-terminus up to amino acid 152.

[Comparison of the distribution and toxicity of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) following 30 days of administration to rats].

Administration of 1000 ppm alpha-HCH, 600 ppm beta-HCH and greater than or equal to 125 ppm gamma-HCH to rats caused a growth retardation. alpha-HCH and beta-HCH led to livermass enlargement. beta-HCH caused a decrease of absolute brain-mass. In case of alpha-HCH and gamma-HCH fat tissue, kidneys and adrenals had a high burden in residues. Fat tissue and adrenals had high residues of beta-HCH. The level of HCH-residues during the test period was gamma much less than beta less than alpha. The results are discussed taking into account the contradictory knowledge from literature.

Evidence that expression of c-fos protein in amnion cells is regulated by external signals.

While c-fos expression is normally very low in certain cell types but transiently inducible by growth factors (e.g. in fibroblasts), other cells (e.g. amnion cells) exhibit an apparently constitutive expression in vivo. Here we show that in primary amnion cells c-fos protein expression rapidly drops to undetectable levels following plating in normal growth medium. However, c-fos expression is inducible by, and maintained at high levels in the presence of, dialyzed placenta- or embryo-conditioned medium. These observations suggest that c-fos expression in primary amnion cells is regulated by placenta- and embryo-derived factor(s), providing further evidence for the hypothesis that transcription of the c-fos gene may generally be controlled by external signals. We also show that proliferation of primary amnion cells is not dependent on a high c-fos expression, suggesting that the function of c-fos is more likely to be associated with other cellular functions in the differentiated amnion cell.

Wounding a fibroblast monolayer results in the rapid induction of the c-fos proto-oncogene.

The c-fos gene has previously been shown to be transiently induced within minutes after the stimulation of mouse fibroblasts with growth factors. Induction of c-fos was observed specifically with competence factors (e.g., platelet-derived growth factor), not with progression factors (e.g., platelet-poor plasma), suggesting a role for c-fos in conferring competence on fibroblasts. To test this hypothesis we have analyzed c-fos expression in NIH 3T3 cells that were made competent in a different way, namely by wounding a confluent monolayer of cells. Using antibodies raised against either a synthetic fos peptide or a beta-galactosidase--fos fusion protein, we show in this study that in the majority of cells lining the wound c-fos protein is rapidly and transiently induced to high levels. No induction is observed in cells at a distance from the wound greater than approximately 5 cell layers. Induction is equally efficient in both serum-containing and serum-free medium, and is similar in cells that were deprived of fetal calf serum for 40 h prior to making the wound. Our observations support the hypothesis that c-fos may be involved in inducing the 'competent state' in fibroblasts and suggests an early role for c-fos in wound healing and tissue regeneration.

Monooxygenase activity of fish liver in biomonitoring aquatic environment.

The hepatic biotransformation activity of four cultivated freshwater fish, Amur carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), carp (Cyprinus carpio), rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and tench (Tinca tinca) were studied one day after catching the fish from ponds and a river in the south of GDR and in fish kept for two weeks in clean filtrated and deacidified water. Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase, 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase and 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase activities fell to about 20% during the stay in clean water in rainbow trout liver microsomes. The reductions were smaller in the other species studied.

Bilateral microsurgical lysis of the spinal accessory nerve roots for treatment of spasmodic torticollis. Follow up of 33 cases.

In 1981 we reported about a new surgical procedure for the treatment of spasmodic torticollis (ST). 33 patients, who failed to respond to the available conservative treatment, underwent a bilateral microsurgical lysis (BML) of the spinal accessory nerve roots (SRAN). Anastomoses between SRAN and the dorsal roots of the first and second cervical nerve (DRC 1/DRC 2) were cut. DRC 1 and sometimes DRC 2 were divided bilaterally. Moreover, SRAN was freed of all adhesions and vascular contacts. Up to 60 months after surgery we have excellent results in 5(5), good results in 10(7) and improved symptoms in 12(8) patients. In 3(7) patients symptoms were unchanged, 2(1) patients deteriorated (patients self assessment is given in brackets). One patient died during hospitalisation. Comparing torticollis symptoms and the post-operative outcome it can be shown that patients with horizontal ST have the best results (21 out of 22). Bad results were obtained in patients with combined torticollis symptoms such as retrocollis, antecollis and the rotatory/horizontal type (5 out of 9). These results support the hypothesis of a peripheral factor in the aetiology of horizontal ST. It is assumed that a unilateral disturbance of proprioceptive afferents for head control, which reach the CNS via anastomosis between DRC 1/DRC 2 and SRAN (in 94% of the cases) could be involved. This hypothesis is discussed with special regard to different anatomical findings in patients with ST and those revealed in a study on human cadavers without this disease.

Heart rate variability in chronic alcoholics: a follow-up study.

Heart rate variability (HRV) was studied in 11 chronic alcoholic subjects, 1-30 days after the beginning of abstinence and again 5, 12 and 24 weeks later. Two patients could be re-examined after 19 and 22 months, respectively. In the follow-up study, the total patient group showed a statistically significant increase in HRV with prolonged abstinence of at least 6 months. No recovery of efferent vagal function was found in 4 patients. It is suggested that the vagal neuropathy may improve in chronic alcoholics, but perhaps only in patients with a short to moderately long duration of drinking history or a functional rather than an organic vagal damage.

Laser lithotripsy of gallstone by means of a pulsed neodymium-YAG laser--in vitro and animal experiments.

Using a flashlamp pulsed Nd: YAG laser it is possible to destroy gallstones within a few seconds (median: 4 sec for stones less than 1.5 cc; 9.5 sec greater than 1.5 cc). In in vitro and animal studies it was shown that the median energy needed for stone destruction varies between 32 Joule for stones less than 1.5 cc and 80 Joules for stones greater than 1.5 cc. A 0.2 mm thick, flexible glass fibre makes possible retrograde laser lithotripsy by conventional endoscopes. Using a suitable technique the danger of thermal damage to tissue is small.

Glycopyrrolate during ketamine/diazepam anaesthesia. A double-blind comparison with atropine.

In a double-blind study, the effects of atropine and glycopyrrolate (dosage ratio 2:1) following i.m. and i.v. administration were compared with respect to salivation, heart rate, and blood pressure before, during and after i.v. infusion anaesthesia with ketamine and diazepam for alloplastic hip or knee surgery in 30 patients above the age of 50 years. Given with the premedicant, the two drugs were equally effective in reducing salivation. A slight increase in heart rate was seen after atropine only (P less than 0.005). Increases in heart rate and blood pressure during induction of anaesthesia were similar in the two groups. A second dose of the test drug was given with neostigmine for reversal of neuromuscular blockade. Again, there were no statistically significant differences with respect to salivation, blood pressure, heart rate, nausea and/or vomiting, unpleasant dreams and arousal time.
