Social modification of alcohol consumption in inbred mice.

The strain-specific "preference" for, or "aversion" to, an alcohol solution in a choice situation on the part of C57BL and DBA mice is believed to be under genetic control. But social rearing conditions are now shown to alter the voluntary consumption of alcohol, so that DBA weanling mice housed for 7 weeks with adult C57BL mice increase--and C57BL weanling mice housed with DBA adults decrease--their alcohol intake. Although substantial and highly significant changes in alcohol self-selection occur, strain-specific phenotypes are not reversed.

Prediction of homicide with the Rorschach.

The use of a step-wise multiple discriminant analysis indicated that the Rorschach variables of S, A, P and m could discriminate with a good degree of accuracy the Rorschach protocols of murderers from those of nonmurderers. These empirically derived linear discriminant functions may serve as a useful adjunct to the clinical interpretation of Rorschach protocols in a criminal population.

The relationship between paranoid delusions and homosexuality.

Freud predicted that paranoid delusions are motivated by unconscious homosexual impulses. The research conductedto test this hypothesis has been reviewed and it is concluded that the results do not support Freud's position. The results indicate anassociation between homosexual concerns and paranoid delusions but not in the manner that FREUD PREDICTED. For example, clinical studies indicate greater overt and conscious homosexual preoccupation in paranoid psychotics compared to nonparanoid psychotics, a finding not predicted by Freud. While psychological studies have tended to find more support for the Freudian position, several studies have failed to find supporting evidence and others are inconsistent in their results.

Attempted suicide in alcoholics and drug addicts.

Alcoholics who had attempted suicide differed on several demographic variables from addicts to other drugs who had attempted suicide; however; they did not differ on any psychological variable.

Cross-fostering of DBA and C57Bl mice. Increase in voluntary consumption of alcohol by DBA weanlings.

Weanling mice of the alcohol-avoiding DBA strain cross-fostered to mothers of the alcohol-selecting C57Bl strain drank twice as much alcohol as did nonfostered DBA mice. In contrast, C57Bl mice cross-fostered to DBA mothers drank the same amount of alcohol as did nonfostered C57Bl mice. Differences in maternal behavior seem to be responsible for differences in alcohol selection by weanlings.
